Some impressive sights seen last night, at Perth's Norrie-Miller Walk Week (the Rabbie Burns themed launch event).

The street-theatre costumed Kelpies on stilts were great....

(not my pictures
, because it was too dark)

And, also: not my video, it's the same venue a few weeks back, because the weather yesternight was too wet....but, it helps give a feel for the surreal context within which the Norrie walk was held. Just imagine this, but being much-busier, filled with numerous semi-traumatised children, more searchlight beams, small battallions of bagpipers, and girls breathing fire whilst dancing with hand-fans made from flaming arrows.

An untypical (but not impossible) late January night in Scotland...

As kelpies are water horses I figured street kelpies were just horses.

Yes, well, human/horse stage hybrids...they were about 8ft tall, due to their pneumatic/sprung stilt-legs, and the horse-eyes were dim LEDs. The overall 'flesh' colour was blue-black.

Remarkably-unsettling, even when you were tall enough (unlike the kids) to see the human operator:artistes within/behind them.

Much-more edgy than an 'armless olde English 'Obby 'Oss.

Typically Scottish: different/familiar/strange and visciously-honest.

How wonderful- thanks so much for sharing :)

'It was a warm wind and high tide..."
Ah, right .....Jethro! Now I see what you meant. I couldn't place it, but it looked familar. From 'Stormwatch'...

There was a warm wind with the high tide
On the south side of the hill,
When a young girl went a-walking
And I followed with a will
Good day to you, my fine young lady
With your lips so sweetly full
May I help you comb your long hair
Sweep it from that brow so cool?

Up, ride with the kelpie
I'll steal your soul to the deep
If you don't ride with me while the devil's free,
I'll ride with somebody else

Well I'm a man when I'm feeling
The urge to step ashore
So I may charm you, not alarm you,
Tell you all fine things, and more

Up, ride with the kelpie
I'll steal your soul to the deep
If you don't ride with me while the devil's free
I'll ride with somebody else

Say goodbye to all your dear kin,
For they hate to see you go
In your young prime, to this place of mine
In the still loch far below

Up, ride with the kelpie
I'll steal your soul to the deep
If you don't ride with me while the devil's free,
I'll ride with somebody else

Jethro Tull
