Beware Liquorice / Licorice!

Hurray for ammonium chloride!

I only discovered the other day that the red colouring in some sweets is made of crushed insects: carmine / E120.

Not the red 'bootlaces' / 'firemen's hoses' mind you.

Yes, true cochineal is, though there are synthetic forms these days.

Ah, yes, licorice...my arch-nemesis.

The black stuff I had once and wondered what sort of chemical I had put in my mouth. The red stuff...well, that's just playing at being candy, but isn't anything, really.

I feel the same way about cranberries. "You call yourself a berry?!!"

Yeah, horrible stuff. I love Twizzlers, though (not being anything like real licorice, of course).

In Canada, there is apparently a black licorice and orange-flavored ice cream called tiger tail, which I plan to avoid like the plague if I ever visit Canada again.

Doesn't the candy use anis and molasses for flavoring now? So no root problems with the lovely chewey Finnish brand, Panda.
