Bizarre goings on at British B&Bs

Dead bodies, sex toys and a huge slab of Wensleydale are just some of the bizarre items which have been found in UK guesthouses, the AA has said.

The Landlady of the Year competition, which is also open to men, heard that nude guests, abandoned pets, a toolbox and a dagger had confronted owners.

In Oban, Scotland, guests disappeared for the day leaving the landlord to deal with the body of a dead relative.

The 20 finalists will hear who has won on 11 May.

In Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, there were red faces all round when one owner had to deal with the vigorous shaking of a ketchup bottle by a guest who left two others covered in tomato sauce.

Turning a blind eye

Donald Cameron runs Dhailling Lodge, in Dunoon, on the Cowal Peninsula in western Scotland.

We turn a blind eye to anything untoward that we meet

He told BBC News Online he was unfazed when one departed guest phoned up to inquire after false teeth that had been left behind.

Mr Cameron added: "We turn a blind eye to anything untoward that we meet."

Although he had no qualms about being described as a "male landlady" he had suggested to the AA that they change it to "landladdies".

The AA's website says the annual award is presented to owners "as a celebration of their hard work, good humour and dedication to making your stay both pleasant and memorable".
