Black Bears

The Three Bears in the cool pool. Vid at link.

A mother bear took her cubs for a swim in British Columbia, as temperatures reached 46.6C (116F), a record breaking high for Canada.

The owner of the swimming pool had a surprise when they caught the unexpected visitors having a cheeky dip. After a splash about in water, the bears headed off over the garden fence.

Bears make off with ball.

Curious bears crash football game in India

A football game in India’s eastern state of Odisha (formerly known as Orissa) had two surprise visitors - a mother bear and her cub. When the football got kicked out from the pitch into a nearby forest, the bears found it and seemed reluctant to return it. They bounced it between them, kicking and tossing the ball in the air, much to the amusement of locals. The bears then took the ball into the forest.

A friend of mine who lives in Pennsylvania had an encounter with a bear recently when she was hiking. Luckily she's done a lot of work in wildlife refuges and knew how to behave. She just stayed quiet, didn't make eye contact and very slowly backed away. She said the bear knew she was there but was more interested in berries and scratching his back on a tree. Finally, he looked in her direction, yawned and ambled off into the woods to do what bears do in woods.
She mentioned her encounter to a ranger and he said it sounded like a bear that is known to them, he doesn't really bother too much about humans and tends to ignore them.

This is my greatest fear walking in the woods around here. You regularly find bear scat. People with dogs have been attacked (not killed).

Three bears have been euthanized in September in Steamboat Springs (Colorado) after entering unlocked homes

https://www.thedenverchannel.com/ne...eamboat-springs-after-entering-unlocked-homes

On Sept. 17 and 18, multiple homeowners near Valverdant Drive, on the east side of Steamboat Springs, reported an aggressive bear had tried to enter their homes, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). On the morning of Sept. 17, the bear successfully got into a house through a sliding glass door and ate food from the fridge, cupboards and trash. The owner was not home, but reported the bear returned later that evening looking for more.

The following morning, CPW wildlife officers received a report of a bear that had tried to enter a home through a window and while it tore the screens, it was unable to get inside.

“We set a trap for this bear because a bear in hyperphagia that has no fear of entering a home in search of food is a dangerous bear that poses an immediate threat to humans,” said CPW Area Wildlife Manager Kris Middledorf.

I wonder who took that picture?

Playing around.

A mother bear and a cub proved that elementary school pupils are not the only ones who can have fun in the playground.

Teachers at Isaac Dickson Elementary School in Asheville, North Carolina, were stunned to see a mother bear and her cub playing on the outdoor jungle gym, rather than the usual crowds of young children.

Adorable footage, filmed on September 21, shows the bigger black bear teaching her cub how to use the playground slide. The mother shows the nervous cub how it's done as she happily skids down a tall slide, much to the entertainment of the teachers recording who are heard screaming in delight.

The larger bear then runs to the bottom of another slide and eagerly waits for the cub, who stands at the top before plucking up the courage to dash down.

Pretending to mimic the mother bear, one teacher hilariously says: 'You can do this one honey, it's the smaller one! You can do it!'

225kg bear Hank the Tank ransacks town, sparks debate over euthanisation

An enormous black bear has broken into at least 38 homes in recent months, leaving locals divided on whether it should be killed.
It’s got a fat chance of survival.
California wildlife authorities are facing backlash from Lake Tahoe residents over their campaign to catch and euthanise a 225kg black bear named Hank the Tank who’s wreaking havoc in the area, the New York Post reports.

“This one individual bear has been linked to property damage at 38 different properties at least,” Peter Tira, representing the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, told KCRA 3 in Sacramento of the problem animal, which resides in the wealthy Tahoe Keys neighbourhood.

Per the wildlife authorities, the obese bruin — since nicknamed “Hank the Tank” — has reportedly been the source of more than 150 calls between law enforcement and wildlife personnel recently.

They reported that despite efforts to dissuade it, the chonky boy caused “extensive property damage and forcefully entered several homes — including occupied homes.”

…locals divided on whether it should be killed.

Really?

Black bears are common animals. They aren’t endangered, and there are up to 35,000 in California alone.

I think the “division” among locals is between those who believe that they have no chance of encountering this particular animal; and those who have already been its victims, or who think they might be next.

Shoot it.

If it can safely be moved to a refuge then do that. Monetize it, Hank The Tank T-shirts etc. Maybe even a You Destroy My Habitat, I'll Destroy Your House T-shirt.

In 2021 hunters killed 1,186 black bears so there is an ongoing culling.

Shoot it. Distribute the usable meat to the poor. Continue educating the public on why killing bears who are not afraid of people and houses is a very good thing. Publish graphic photos of the damage bears can do to people, dogs, other pets, livestock, etc.

There are a lot of black bears in the US. When I was in Utah last year, I was surprised to learn that bears are in season for hunting 10 months of the year. This year, they are in season 8 months of the year.

Is bear meat good to eat?

Hank the Tank has been exonerated!
DNA Evidence Exonerates Big Bear ‘Hank The Tank’ From Tahoe-Area Break-Ins

“Hank the Tank,” the big bear being blamed for breaking into dozens of homes across the Tahoe Keys area, may be innocent after all.

The 500-pound ... bear was blamed for another break-in last Friday morning; however, California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials say they collected DNA evidence from the scene and found that a female bear was actually the culprit. The discovery prompted officials to back through DNA evidence over the last seven months. What they found was that there were three other bears, two males and one female, responsible for damaging the more than 30 properties that were originally linked solely to Hank. ...

Fish and Wildlife have concluded that Hank may not even be responsible for any of the break-ins over the last seven months, officials said on Thursday.

The BEAR League, who have been advocating for leaving Hank alone, lauded the work done to make sure that Hank was indeed the bear wanted for the break-ins. ...

“Hank no longer has a death sentence hanging over him and he is no longer going to have his freedom taken away from him by sending him to a sanctuary,” the BEAR League wrote in a statement ...

Wildlife officials catch 500-pound bear roaming near a Tennessee university

A 500-pound black bear prowling around a Tennessee university has been captured and relocated, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
The bear was living near the Tusculum University campus in Greeneville. In a Facebook post, the agency said the bear "had become habituated to human and unnatural foods." The large bear had made a habit of eating garbage, bird seed, and pet food, and "ramped up its activity and property damage last year."
At 500 pounds, the animal is at the upper limit of a black bear's size, according to the agency.

Bears raid homeless campsite.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska wildlife officials have killed four black bears in a campground recently reserved for people in Anchorage who are homeless after the city’s largest shelter was closed. Employees from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game on Tuesday killed a sow and her two cubs and another adult bear that was acting separately, stealing food from tents inside Centennial Park, which is managed by the city, officials said.

Anchorage is Alaska’s biggest city, with nearly 300,000 residents, but it is also bear country. The park is located in east Anchorage, nestled between Chugach State Park and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, which state wildlife officials describe as a vast bear habitat.
