Woman grows extra breasts

April 1, 2004

A woman in cental China who paid for breast enlargement surgery ended up with an unwanted bonus - two extra breasts.

The 24-year-old woman found the extra breasts growing on her stomach one year after she underwent surgery at a clinic in Hunan province.

The extra breasts grew and grew until the woman was forced to undergo a second operation to get rid of them, according to the Hong Kong edition of the China Daily yesterday.

The initial operation was carried out at a small beauty salon which was unauthorised to carry out breast enlargement surgery, the newspaper said.

Cosmetic surgery has boomed in popularity in China in recent years but there is little official regulation of the industry.

Pseudomamma on the foot: An unusual presentation of supernumerary breast tissue.

1.jpg

A 22-year-old woman sought medical care for a lesion in the plantar region of her left foot, a well-formed nipple surrounded by areola and hair. Microscopic examination of the dermis showed hair follicles, eccrine glands, and sebaceous glands. Fat tissue was noted at the base of the lesion. Clinical and histopathologic findings were consistent with the diagnosis of supernumerary breast tissue, also known as pseudomamma. To our knowledge, this is the first report of supernumerary breast tissue on the foot.

The news item provides insufficient details to support verification of the story.

The development of additional (more than two) breasts is a not uncommon medical condition.

Accessory breasts, also known as polymastia, supernumerary breasts, or mammae erraticae, is the condition of having an additional breast. Extra breasts may appear with or without nipples or areolae. It is a condition and a form of atavism which is most prevalent in male humans, and often goes untreated as it is mostly harmless. In recent years, many affected women have had a plastic surgery operation to remove the additional breasts, for purely aesthetic reasons.

I'll skip the expected reference to a certain Mars-focused movie, and instead mention I am among those people who appear to have an extra nipple, tucked near one of my armpits. No, it is not sexy in any way.
There, I feel better having shared that.

The "extra breasts" story was published in China Daily on March 31, 2004 - albeit without the specific claim the abdominal growths represented supernumerary breasts. I suspect this claim was added by folks who re-published the story the following day.
Breast Enlargement Causes Swellings on Belly

A fashion-conscious girl who received surgery to enlarge her breasts has ended up growing four swellings - two on her chest and two on her abdomen, reports Chongqing Morning Post.

Wang, 24, who lives in Chongqing Municipality, underwent the breast-enlargement operation at a small beauty salon in Central China's Henan Province in 2002.

However, one year later, the girl began to sprout two breast-shaped swellings on her belly which slowly enlarged as time passed by. Wang said she was ashamed to use public bathrooms and had to undergo another operation to get rid of the extra growths.

Medical professionals caution not to trust unauthorized hospitals or clinics performing such procedures.

There's an extra layer of second-handedness -- they're quoting a Chongqing Morning Post ('重庆晨报' I think) story about an event in 2002.

Pseudomamma on the foot: An unusual presentation of supernumerary breast tissue.
The cited article contains the following overview of the diverse conditions involving supernumerary breasts, breast tissues and breast components.

Anomalies associated with breast development are not uncommon. Supernumerary nipples, and less frequently supernumerary breasts, are present in about 1-5 percent of the population. Such alterations are more common in women, usually occurring along the embryonic milk line, which extends from the axilla to the groin.

Supernumerary breast tissue (SBT) is rarely found beyond the mammary line. However, the back, shoulder, face, and thigh have been described as sites of SBT development. When glandular tissue is present, SBT may be affected by the same disease processes that occur in normally positioned breast tissue. To our knowledge, this is the first report of SBT on the foot.

The classification established by Kajava is based on the presence or absence of nipple, areola and breast glandular tissue, and is divided into eight categories:

1. Complete breast tissue with glandular tissue, nipple and areola
2. Glandular tissue and nipple
3. Glandular tissue and areola
4. Glandular tissue only
5. Nipple and areola, and fat tissue that replaces the glandular tissue, also known as pseudomamma
6. Nipple only, also known as polythelia
7. Areola only, also known as polythelia areolaris
8. Patch of hair only, also known as polythelia pilosa
The current case reported is included in the fifth category, i.e., presence of nipple and areola but no glandular tissue. Polythelia and pseudomamma are the two most common forms of SBT
