Bogus 'Confessions'

Hi,
I admit I don't know as much about poltergeists as I would like, so I would like to ask for help.

I've come across a local case from last century which is a classic poltergeist tale of stones being thrown and windows breaking and all seemed interesting until the Chief Constable interviewed a juvenile member of the household who confessed to the deeds.
I'm sure I've read similar stories in the past, where confessions were given which were either recanted or in hindsight seem bogus, but I can't think of any off-hand. Can any members of the board refresh my memory?
