Boko Haram Islamist Cult

Good news. I hope its not exaggerated.

8 Cameroon soldiers, 107 Boko Haram militants killed in fighting

Eight troops from Cameroon and 107 Boko Haram militants have been killed in fighting in the north of Cameroon, according to the defense ministry in a statement state radio announcement on Friday. The militant Islamist group has stepped up attacks into Cameroon from its stronghold in northeastern Nigeria, where it is attempting to create a de facto Islamist state.

Nigerians doubtful of girls' release after Boko Haram 'truce' breached

LAGOS - - A wave of violence hours after Nigeria's government announced a truce with Boko Haram raised doubt on Sunday about whether more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by the Islamist militants will really be released, deflating the new hopes of their parents.

Nigeria's armed forces chief Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh announced the ceasefire on Friday to enable the release of the girls, who were abducted from the remote northeastern village of Chiboke in April.

But Boko Haram has not confirmed the truce and there have been at least five attacks since - blamed by security sources on the insurgents - that have killed dozens. Talks were scheduled to continue in neighboring Chad on Monday.

"We were jubilating. We had every reason to be happy ... but since then the ceasefire has been broken in quite a number of places already," Lawan Abana, a parent of the one of the missing girls, told Reuters by telephone.

He added that there were doubts about the credentials of the reported Boko Haram negotiator Danladi Ahmadu, who was unheard of before. "Can we trust him that he can deliver on this promise of releasing the girls when he has not delivered on the promise of the ceasefire?" Abana said.

The government says the attacks may not have been Boko Haram but one of several criminal groups exploiting the chaos of its insurgency. Analysts point out that Boko Haram is anyway heavily factionalised, so what matters is whether the faction the government is talking to has control over the girls' fate. ...

At least 10 people have been killed in a bomb blast as they queued to withdraw money from a cash machine in northern Nigeria, residents have told the BBC. Security operatives say a female suicide bomber was responsible for the attack in Azare, Bauchi state.

No group has said it carried out the attack but suspicion is likely to fall on Islamist militant group Boko Haram. The group has killed thousands since 2009 in its campaign to set up an Islamic state in north-eastern Nigeria. Boko Haram has in the past claimed responsibility for similar attacks in the north.

The attack took place outside the branch of the First Bank in Azare, not far from a bus station where a bomb killed several people last month. ...

More than 2,000 prisoners have escaped over the past five years in Nigeria, officials say, mainly as a result of attacks on jails by the Islamist militant Boko Haram group.

They say that dozens of prison staff have been killed during the raids.

Last month hundreds of prisoners escaped when jihadists overran Mubi town. This week they blew a hole in a jail in Kogi State to free dozens more.

Almost 500 prisoners escaped in the city of Maiduguri in 2009.

A total of 2,251 prisoners have got away and most of them are still at large, officials say. ...

Mere words cannot describe the horror with which I received this news. Yet I can't say I was really surprised.

Suicide bomber kills 48 at school assembly in Nigeria

Soldiers rushed to the scene in the city of Potiskumbut, the capital of Yobe state, but were chased away by a crowd throwing stones and shouting. They were angry about the military's inability to halt a five-year Islamic insurgency that has killed thousands of people and driven hundreds of thousands from their homes.

A suicide bomb attack in the same city killed 30 people a week ago, when suspected Boko Haram fighters attacked a religious procession of moderate Muslims.

Some 2,000 students had gathered for this morning's weekly assembly at the Government Technical Science College when the explosion blasted through the school hall.

Student Musa Ibrahim Yahaya, 17, said: "We were waiting for the principal to address us, around 7.30am, when we heard a deafening sound and I was blown off my feet, people started screaming and running, I saw blood all over my body." ...

Islamist militants from Nigeria's Boko Haram have reportedly killed 48 people in an attack on fish sellers near the border with Chad. A fish traders' group said some victims had their throats slit whilst others were tied up and drowned in Lake Chad.

The attack took place on Thursday, but the news took several days to come to light because Boko Haram has destroyed mobile phone masts in the area. It was the second major attack in two days by Boko Haram.

In Thursday's attack, the traders were on their way to Chad to buy fish when militants blocked their path near the village of Doron Baga, some 180km (112 miles) north of Maiduguri in Borno state.

Abubakar Gamandi, the head of the fish sellers' association, said the militants had used no guns. ...

The tension is palpable in Kano, after bombers and gunmen struck killing more than 100 people at the central mosque. No-one here is in any doubt that Boko Haram did it. It seems people do not know where to vent their anger now but hostility hangs in the air.

Inside the mosque, the sight is shocking. Beyond the blood-soaked steps, the floor is strewn with debris: scattered prayer mats, beads, smashed spectacles and pages from the Koran. There are bullet marks on the pillars and the suicide bombers' blood can be seen splattered across the walls and right up inside the dome.

"We heard a loud sound outside, but people said let's continue praying," said Adamu Magashi, who was inside facing the imam who had just finished his sermon at the time of the attack. ...

The Catholic Archbishop of Jos, in central Nigeria, has accused the West of ignoring the threat of the militant Islamist group, Boko Haram.

Ignatius Kaigama said the world had to show more determination to halt the group's advance in Nigeria. He said the international community had to show the same spirit and resolve it had done after the attacks in France.

His warning came after 23 people were killed by three female suicide bombers, one reported to be 10 years old. The weekend attacks come after reports that hundreds of people were killed last week during the capture by Boko Haram of the town of Baga in Borno state. ...

Images show scale of Boko Haram devastation
Human rights group Amnesty International has released satellite images showing what it says is "indisputable and shocking evidence" of the scale of last week's attack on two Nigerian towns by Boko Haram fighters.

Before and after images of two neighbouring towns, Baga and Doro Gowon in northern Nigeria taken on January 2 and 7, show the devastating effect of the attacks which left over 3,700 structures damaged or completely destroyed.

Suspected Boko Haram Islamist fighters from Nigeria kidnapped around 80 people, many of them children, and killed three others yesterday in a cross-border attack on villages in northern Cameroon, army and government officials said.

The kidnappings, among the largest abductions on Cameroonian soil since the militants began expanding their zone of operations across the border last year, came as neighbouring Chad deployed troops to support Cameroon’s forces in the area.

“According to our initial information, around 30 adults, most of them herders, and 50 young girls and boys aged between 10 and 15 years were abducted,” a senior army officer deployed to northern Cameroon told Reuters.

He said the early-morning attack had targeted the village of Mabass and several other villages along the porous border with Nigeria. Soldiers intervened and exchanged fire with the raiders for around two hours, he added. ...

Forces from Niger and Chad have launched a ground and air offensive against militant group Boko Haram in north-eastern Nigeria, officials say.
