Cannibalism: Disturbing, Gory—Strangely Common

Cannibalism as a funerary rite.

The remains of human bones with cutmarks, breaks and human chewing marks found across northern Europe show that some human groups living around 15,000 years ago were eating their dead not out of necessity, but as part of their culture.

While in the modern day most people will either bury or cremate their dead, some of our ancestors did things a little differently.

Gough's Cave is a well-known paleolithic site in south-eastern England. Nestled in the Cheddar Gorge, the cave is perhaps best known for the discovery of 15,000 years old human skulls shaped into what are believed to have been cups and bones that had been gnawed by other humans.

But were the people living in Gough's Cave a gruesome outlier, or where they actually part of a wider cannibalistic culture of northern Europe? A new paper now suggests that they were not alone. Human remains dating to the same time period from across northern and western Europe and attributed to the same culture, known as the Magdalenian, also show evidence that they were cannibalized. This suggests that the eating of the dead was a shared behavior during the late Upper Paleolithic.

Dr. Silvia Bello is an expert on the evolution of human behavior working at the Natural History Museum and was part of this latest study published in Quaternary Science Reviews.

"Instead of burying their dead, these people were eating them," explains Silvia. "We interpret the evidence that cannibalism was practiced on multiple occasions across north-western Europe over a short period of time, as this practice was part of a diffuse funerary behavior among Magdalenian groups."

"That in itself is interesting, because it is the oldest evidence of cannibalism as a funerary practice."

This cannibalistic behavior was seemingly fairly common among Magdalenian people of north-western Europe, but it didn't last particularly long. There was a shift towards people burying their dead, a behavior seen widely across south central Europe and attributed to a second distinct culture, known as the Epigravettian.

Putin Keeps Sending Cannibal Convicts to Ukraine Front

A convicted murderer who killed at least four people and ate the flesh of one of his victims has reportedly been pardoned by Vladimir Putin, allowing him to join Russian forces fighting in Ukraine.

Denis Gorin's pardoning, as reported by Russian-language Telegram channels, follows reports that a Satanist jailed for two decades for cannibalism had also been freed so he could participate on the front lines of the Russian president's full-scale invasion.

Russia is said to have been recruiting from prisons for its war effort for months, quashing jail terms in exchange for fighting in Ukraine.

Gorin, 44, from Aniva in the far-eastern Sakhalin region, was convicted of murder three times, the first time in 2003. Seven years later, he was released on parole during which time he fatally stabbed the brother of the man with whom he was in pretrial detention.

Investigators said he admitted cutting the legs off the corpse which he washed, put in a refrigerator, and ate.

Questions to which the answer is "No!":

Is it time for a more subtle view on the ultimate taboo: cannibalism?

New archaeological evidence shows that ancient humans ate each other surprisingly often - sometimes for compassionate reasons. The finds give us an opportunity to reassess our views on the practice.

That's marvellous!
Cannibalism on compassionate ground!
Reminds one of that classic:
Two cannibals are eating a clown. One asks the other, "Does this taste funny?"

It is now thought that 80 percent of the Haitian capital is controlled by these gangs.

Describing the violence in the country, a journalist on the ground told [a US newspaper] that cannibalism has been witnessed on the streets as the violence reaches "unprecedented" levels.

The journalist said via message: "Cannibalism is not widespread, but definitely an indication of the worsening situation. It definitely happens on a few occasions."

I question the veracity of this article, specifically regarding cannibalism. The only apparent source is one journalist on the ground.

Currently, Al Jazeera, CNN, NPR etc are covering this and not one mentions cannibalism. There are numerous sources including journalists. The journalists who are there are also named in the articles.

The Express is not a great go-to source for unbiased information:

Cannibal killer who butchered and ate childhood pal on fishing trip in frozen forest captured after ten years on the run

A CANNIBAL killer who brutally butchered and ate his childhood friend has finally been captured after ten years on the run.

Alexei Gorulenko, 46, ate his pal when they were trapped in a dense, frozen forest after their car sank in a river during a fishing trip in Yakutia, Siberia, in 2012.

Gorulenko was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm resulting in death by negligence in 2014.

He was sentenced to 12 years in a maximum security prison colony but Gorulenko failed to appear at the court hearing.

Instead, he fled and has been on Russia’s most wanted list ever since.

The cannibal was on the run for a decade, hiding in remote fishing camps and abandoned houses in Russia's Far East and Siberia.

He was finally apprehended when he tried to visit a relative in a village near Saratov, in south-western Russia.

He’ll be on the front line in Ukraine by next week. Plenty of bodies to eat there.
