Cannibalism: Disturbing, Gory—Strangely Common

Cannibal confession: Taiga ordeal survivors ate dead friend

One of two men who survived four months of wandering in Siberian Taiga has confessed that the pair ate an unlucky friend who died from the cold. Earlier, rescuers had discovered a frozen butchered human carcass in the woods.

Aleksandr Abdulaev is one of two people discovered by an emergency service helicopter patrol on November 28 in Russia’s Yakutia Republic. Abdulaev, Aleksey Gorulenko, and two other men drove to a remote Siberian river in August, during the warm season, but had to return on foot across the now-snow-covered forests. The two survivors had marched some 100 kilometers by the time they were rescued.

The exhausted duo initially claimed that they left the two other members of their group in a hunter's hut, because one of them injured his leg and could not walk. But later, rescuers in Taiga sweeping their path stumbled upon human remains that had the marks of being cut into pieces with an axe. Most of the soft tissue was missing, and there were no claw or tooth marks, which would have indicated an attack by animal predators.

Confronted with the evidence, Abtulaev said he and Gorulenko had to resort to cannibalism, but insisted their friend died from exposure to cold, local news site Sakhapress reported, citing a police source. The man said the gruesome act allowed the pair to survive another week.

Two men from Kent have been arrested in connection with the case of a former New York policeman accused of plotting to eat women in the US.

Gilberto Valle, 28, is charged with conspiracy to kidnap, and using police databases to make a list of targets. He denies the allegations.

A Kent Police spokesman said two men aged 57 and 30, from the Canterbury area, were arrested on 21 February.

Dale Bolinger, a nurse, is understood to be one of the men arrested in Kent.

Gilberto Valle is charged with conspiracy to kidnap

In a statement, Kent Police said the men had been arrested on 21 February on suspicion of conspiracy offences, grooming and possession of child abuse images.

"Kent Police has been in contact with US law enforcement agencies in relation to this investigation," the spokesman said.

"We can confirm it is in relation to the Gilberto Valle case in the US."

The force spokesman said the two men had been released on police bail while inquiries continued.

Defence lawyers said Gilberto Valle did not intend to actually carry out any cannibal plots

A New York City police officer has been found guilty of plotting to murder his wife, and cook and eat other women.

Gilberto Valle - dubbed the "cannibal cop" by US media - was arrested by the FBI last year after a tip-off by his wife, from whom he is now estranged.

The 28-year-old faces life in prison when he is sentenced in June.

Valle's lawyers argued he had merely engaged in a role-playing fantasy he concocted while browsing fetish websites, and said they would appeal.

But prosecutor Hadassa Waxman told the US District Court in Manhattan that Valle had "left the world of fantasy and entered the world of reality" by contacting some of the women mentioned in his plans.

He was also convicted on a lesser charge of improperly accessing a law enforcement database to look up the women's personal information.

Prosecutors told how he visited a street that was home to a woman he had agreed to kidnap for $5,000 (£3,360) for a New Jersey man, who is now awaiting trial.

Valle also used the internet to research the best rope for tying up people and to learn which chemicals render a person unconscious. Search terms found on his computer included "human flesh" and "white slavery".

'Dangerous precedent'
During the trial, Valle's estranged wife, Kathleen Mangan, 27, testified against him.

Valle's detailed plans to abduct women for the purpose of grotesque crimes were very real”

Preet Bharara
Manhattan prosecutor
She said she had found "thousands of emails" on her laptop, which he had been using, detailing his plans to like-minded fetishists.

"I was going to be tied up by my feet and my wrists and my throat slit, and they were going to watch the blood drain out of me," she added.

Ms Mangan said that in the emails, Valle had discussed how two other women would be "raped in front of each other to heighten their fears", and another would be roasted alive over a fire.

Both she and Valle wept when the court was shown a picture of him in his police uniform, feeding their newborn daughter.

After Tuesday's verdict, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, said: "Today, a unanimous jury found that Gilberto Valle's detailed and specific plans to abduct women for the purpose of committing grotesque crimes were very real, and that he was guilty as charged.

"The internet is a forum for the free exchange of ideas, but it does not confer immunity for plotting crimes and taking steps to carry out those crimes."

But Galle's lawyer, Julia Gatto, said the conviction was flawed because the jury had focused on his "unusual and bizarre and frankly very ugly" thoughts, and not on the fact that no-one had been harmed.

"This is a dangerous prosecution, when we start opening up our minds and prosecuting what's inside our brains and not in the real world," she added. "We totally believe the government did not prove their case and the jury couldn't get past the thoughts."

The defence team said it would ask the judge to set aside the verdict.

Amid the investigation into Valle's online correspondence, UK authorities arrested two men last month in Kent, England.

The pair, aged 57 and 30, from the Canterbury area, were released on police bail while inquiries continued.

'Proof' Jamestown settlers turned to cannibalism
By Jane O'Brien, BBC News, Jamestown, Virginia

Newly discovered human bones prove the first permanent British settlers in North America turned to cannibalism over the cruel winter of 1609-10, US researchers have said.
Scientists found unusual cuts consistent with butchering for meat on human bones dumped in a rubbish pit.
The four-century-old skull and tibia of a teenage girl in James Fort, Virginia, were excavated from the dump last year.

James Fort, founded in 1607, was the earliest part of the Jamestown colony.

Researchers fashioned a three-dimension replica of the girl's face "The evidence is absolutely consistent with dismemberment and de-fleshing of this body," said Doug Owsley, a forensic anthropologist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC.

Written documents had previously suggested the desperate colonists resorted to cannibalism - but the discovery of the 14-year-old girl's bones offers the first scientific proof.

Smithsonian researchers believe the dead child became food for a community struggling to survive the harsh winter of 1609-10, known to historians as the Starving Time.

"There were numerous chops and cuts - chops to the forehead, chops to the back of the skull and also a puncture to the left side of the head that was used to essentially pry off that side," Dr Owsley said. "The purpose was to extract the brain."
The marks also indicate that the tongue and facial tissue were removed.
"The clear intent was to remove the facial tissue and the brain for consumption," he said. "These people were in dire circumstances. So any flesh that was available would have been used."

The same flesh taken from animals would have been considered a delicacy in the 17th Century. Hogs' heads in particular featured prominently in recipes from the period.

The cuts to the girl's bones also indicate the work was hesitant - whoever performed the dismemberment was not a skilled butcher of animals.
It is also possible the ersatz butcher was a woman, as they made up the majority of the fort's inhabitants.

How the girl died is unknown, but the assault on her body would have taken place very soon afterwards.
"The attempt to [remove] the brain is something you would need to do very quickly because brains do not preserve well," Dr Owsley said.

Dr Owsley worked closely with chief archaeologist William Kelso of the Jamestown Rediscovery Project. Dr Kelso discovered the girl's bones last year during excavations at James Fort.

Little is known about the victim apart from her age and the fact she was English. Her origin has been confirmed by comparative studies on bones in Cambridge.
Further analysis indicates she was at one time well-nourished and ate a lot of meat, a diet consistent with richer classes.

Researchers also have a sense of what she looked like thanks to digital and forensic facial reconstruction. The fragmented skull was scanned, with the digital information providing a virtual model from which to fashion a three-dimensional replica.

The Starving Time was one of the most horrific periods of early colonial history. The James Fort settlers were under siege from the indigenous Indian population and had insufficient food to last the winter.
First they ate their horses, then dogs, cats, rats, mice and snakes. Some, to satisfy their cruel hunger, ate the leather of their shoes.

As the weeks turned to months, nothing was spared to maintain life. How many of the growing numbers of dead were cannibalised is unknown. But it is almost certain the girl was not the only victim.

Relief came in the form of Lord De La Warr, who sailed into the settlement with food and new colonists. After six months of siege and starvation, only 60 of the original 300 settlers had survived.

"It's somebody doing what they had to do," said Dr Owsley of the cannibalism.

An explanation of why cannibalism occurs during wars, but not just that; it also explores why other atrocities occur.

Congolese rebels have been accused of cannibalism by the UN

The recent case of a Syrian rebel appearing to take a bite from an opponent's heart seems utterly shocking and disturbing. But is this incident more inhuman than all the other countless atrocities that have already taken place in this war?

We are used to reports of mass graves, torture, killings and mutilations of civilians, and the eradication of complete villages.

But this particular barbarous act has attracted special attention. Cannibalism seems to contradict common moral and ethical beliefs on what is acceptable in war scenarios and what is not. So has the violence really reached a new dimension and what motivation underlies these acts?

Our research unit at the department of psychology, University of Konstanz, is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms motivating cruelty.

In interviewing more than 2,500 former combatants in Uganda, Rwanda, Colombia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, we found evidence that the numerous outrages that are committed in these regions - beyond the glare of Western publicity - are no less brutish or less inhuman than this recent incident from Syria.

About the author

Roland Weierstall is an assistant professor of clinical psychology at the University of Konstanz
The psychobiology of human aggression is his specialism
He has conducted extensive studies with former combatants of Uganda, Rwanda, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and World War II

On the contrary, when moral barriers fall and violence is legitimised in the context of war, the inhibition towards intra-species killing breaks down. Seeing the victim suffer can be a sufficient reward for violence, irrespective of secondary rewards like honour, status or material rewards.

There are two basic motivations that foster such violent behaviour.

Firstly, there is violence that results from negative emotions like rage and hatred and that appears as a response towards a threat. And secondly, there are "positive" emotions like excitement or hedonistic pleasure.

The former is easier for civilians to understand. No-one knows the story behind the Syrian video and consequently no-one knows the motives that underlie the rebel's behaviour. It cannot be excused, but I will suggest it can be understood, bearing in mind what might have happened prior to the incident.

Out of utter rage and vengeance, humans can behave in a way that might appear to be inhumane.

The executions of Saddam Hussein or Bin Laden remind us that under certain circumstances even civilians can overcome their moral beliefs and values, which include refraining from killing. Instead of appalled reactions, the video of an execution and the picture of the blood of a man in his bedroom became seen as trophies after a great hunt.

This gruesome episode is also a powerful reminder of the bitterness and increasingly sectarian nature of the fighting in Syria”

Jonathan Marcus
BBC diplomatic correspondent
Syria video pinpoints West's dilemma
Consequently, we should not be amazed by the brutality of violent acts of war. Can emotions and consequently also violent acts be any more intense than in an enduring and irreconcilable conflict like the one in Syria?

The second form of violent behaviour, called appetitive aggression - committed for "pleasure" - is less familiar to most of us. About one third of all former combatants in our studies said that to some extent the violence and the struggling of the victim could be fascinating, emotionally arousing and even linked to excitement. In these cases, blood must be shed as the victim is killed.

Systematic torture to make the opponent suffer, the mutilation of civilians, like cutting off ears, lips or genitals and the desecration of dead bodies are surprisingly common by-products of war and escalating violence, and can be found across different cultural and historical backgrounds.

Hence, the Syrian case should not surprise anyone. We should rather be surprised that the extent of human right violations we should expect to happen in Syria is kept secret.

An estimated two million children in Syria face malnutrition, disease and trauma
Besides appetitive aggression as a core motivation for cruel behaviour, cannibalism in particular can have a considerable social and ritual significance. There are rebel groups that resort to superstitious cannibalism as part of a traditional culture.

Almost 10% of former rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo reported in one of our studies that they had eaten human flesh and one out of four reported the witnessing of cannibalism among their comrades.

The Mai-Mai fighters of eastern Congo drink blood of the enemy or ingest their heart or genitals to gain the power of the enemy warrior. However, as there is no evidence for a historical tradition of cannibalism in Syria, speculation in this direction appears to be far-fetched and exaggerated.

It's likely that the behaviour in this video will become more frequent and persistent in the Syrian conflict.

Violence against civilians and unspeakably cruel acts against the enemy are powerful and effective coercive strategies to systematically intimidate and demoralise the enemy, even if they risk revenge.

The media attention given to this incident and the intense indignation might demonstrate the rebels' resolve to resort to violence and increase their bargaining position within the conflict - or it could further fuel the cycle of violence.

The motivation underlying human cruel behaviour is complex. An adequate appraisal of this incident in Syria depends on sufficient information which - especially for the Syrian conflict in general - is seldom available.

Suspected Cannibalism Shocks France As Man Confesses To Eating Victim's Heart And Tongue

Huffington Post. 15.November.2013

French police are crying cannibalism after a man in southern France allegedly cut out a man's heart and tongue with the intention of eating them.

Police in Nouilhan arrested a 26-year-old homeless man late Thursday night. According to local outlets, the man is accused of breaking into a 90-year-old's home and bashing in his skull with a metal tool from the resident's barn. Investigators say the man then set fire to the corpse, cut out the victim's heart and tongue and may have cooked them, Le Parisien reports.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered a calcinated body, along with some cooked meat and white beans on a plate.

After the 26-year-old fled the home, he allegedly assaulted a man on a tractor, breaking his shoulder. As the police narrative goes, he then entered another home and managed to grab a shotgun before he was chased out by the owner.

Officers were able to find the man and arrested him shortly before midnight. During his arrest, he reportedly acted "very calm" and "not aggressive."

It's not immediately clear whether the man actually cooked or ate the body parts. However, from his statements, authorities say there is reason to believe he cooked and ate the 90-year-old's heart and tongue, Le Nouvel Observateur reports.

"It would seem he acted because of voices, messages that he was receiving and that were telling him to act in this way. Those are his first statements,” local prosecutor Chantal Firmigier-Michel told the Agence France-Presse.

The man has already undergone a psychiatric evaluation, which revealed an "abolition of mental faculties," 20 Minutes reports. An autopsy will be performed Monday to confirm the truth of the accused's statements.

According to Le Figaro, Jean Duval, the mayor of the small town, which is home to some 200 residents, said he was "shocked" by the tragedy and called the scene at the 90-year-old's home "particularly traumatic."

German policeman 'kills and eats lover'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25151961

Police in Dresden say they have arrested a 55-year-old police officer on suspicion of murder after the body of another man was found in the Erz mountains in eastern Germany.

They say there are indications that parts of the victim may have been eaten.

The dead man lived in Hanover and had been reported missing.

Police believe that the two men met via an internet site for those interested in sex with torture.

They say that the victim was tortured, killed and dismembered, and that his body parts were buried on a piece of land in the mountainous region which belonged to the alleged killer.

The arrested man works for Saxony's State Office of Criminal Investigation in the forensics department.

Germany's Bild tabloid reports that he is an expert in handwriting analysis.

The BBC's Stephen Evans in Berlin says that it is not clear whether the killing was deliberate or whether it was the playing out of fantasy which went wrong.

Police say that body parts of the victim were missing, and they presume that cannibalism took place.

CAR cannibal: Why I ate man's leg
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-25708024
Paul Wood's report from Bangui contains some disturbing images

Sectarian violence in the Central African Republic has reached a new extreme with an act of cannibalism in the capital, Bangui. The BBC's Paul Wood has heard a graphic first-person account, which some might find upsetting.

The buses throwing up clouds of red clay dust had yet to rub out the ugly bloodstain in the dirt. A Muslim man had been murdered here a few days ago, by Christians. His limbs were hacked off. Then one of the crowd ate the flesh in a public demonstration of cannibalism.

We were filming nearby when a young man in a yellow T-shirt came up to talk to me.

"I am the naughty one," he said in broken French. Puzzled, I shook his hand and was trying to ease past him when I noticed the machete tucked into his skinny jeans. "I am the naughty one," he repeated.

I ate his leg, the whole thing right down to the bone - with bread. That's why people call me Mad Dog.”

Ouandja Magloire
Desecration of bodies in war
With a sickening feeling, I realised I was talking to the cannibal.

Camera phones had captured the crime. The pictures show a charred and dismembered body being dragged through the street by a screaming mob. A man held a severed leg and bit down into it.

The same, slightly built figure was standing in front of me. He was even wearing the same yellow T-shirt as in the video.

A few minutes earlier, I had spoken to a horrified witness, Ghislein Nzoto. He said it began when the Muslim man was dragged from a bus.

"People started attacking him, kicking him. They smashed a rock against his head. They kept going even after he was dead."

He went on: "They set the body on fire. There were about 20 youths. They cut a whole leg off. Then one of them started to eat it. He bit into it four times and swallowed. It was raw, not burned.

"This was right in front of the Burundian peacekeepers. One of the soldiers vomited. Then he chased people away with his gun."

'I swore revenge'
The cannibal's name was Ouandja Magloire - though he told me he was now known as "Mad Dog".

There was a busy market either side of the street, people hawking brightly coloured cloth, skin-whitening creams, and piles of fresh loaves. We went somewhere a bit quieter so I could ask him why he had done this awful thing.

He told me that Muslims had killed his pregnant wife, his sister-in-law, and her new baby.

People brandish knives and machetes
The media is blamed for presenting political conflicts in highly charged, sectarian terms
He saw a man sitting on the minibus - he thought he looked Muslim so he decided to follow the bus. More and more people joined him until he was at the head of a mob.

"We followed him," he said. "If he reached the intersection, the Burundians would protect him. So we told the minibus driver to stop. The driver said: 'You're right. He is a Muslim.'"

He described what happened after the man was dragged off the bus: "I kicked his legs out from under him. He fell down. I stabbed his eyes.

"Muslim! Muslim! Muslim! I stabbed him in the head. I poured petrol on him. I burned him. Then I ate his leg, the whole thing right down to the white bone. That's why people call me Mad Dog."

On the video, "Mad Dog" is seen happily chewing, his cheeks bulging. He waves a leg about in between mouthfuls. I returned to the question of why he had done this.

"Because I am angry," he said. He had no other explanation.

During our interview, he betrayed no sign of that anger, or of pride, or regret, or of any emotion at all. His tone was neutral, his eyes and face blank.

Everyone's so angry with the Muslims: No way anyone was going to intervene”

Ghislein Nzoto
Witness
The witness I'd spoken to, Ghislein Nzoto, said no-one in the busy street had tried to help the victim.

"No-one at all," he said, shaking his head. "Everyone's so angry with the Muslims. No way anyone was going to intervene."

But the most disturbing thing happened the next day, he said. "Mad Dog" returned, having saved some of the dead man's flesh. He put it between two halves of a baguette and ate it, with a side of okra.

Ghislein didn't agree with Muslims being killed but it was at least something he could comprehend, he said. Like most other Christians I spoke to, he was both appalled and baffled by the act of cannibalism.

Perhaps, he agreed with me, this atrocity was simply the act of an unbalanced individual. Or it might be the result of sectarian hatreds.

Or - his final explanation - this had something to do with sorcery.

Many of the Christian fighters we met - the anti-balaka - believe in magic. They go into battle wearing a variety of amulets. A group of fighters at a checkpoint told me some of the amulets contained the flesh of men they had killed.

"We are bullet-proof," their commander told me, chuckling.

There has been, as far we know, no other act of cannibalism is this conflict. There is, however, precedent in the Central African Republic.

Congolese soldiers from the African-led International Support Mission to the Central African Republic (MISCA) stand guard in a street where people burnt tyres following the killing of a man by an ex-Seleka member, on 12 January 2014, in Bangui
Sectarian feeling against Muslims is running high in Bangui
The "Emperor" Bokassa, who ruled from 1966 to 1979, was accused of having his enemies cooked and served at state dinners. Paris Match published photographs it said were of the body parts of children in a fridge at his palace. (After he was deposed, Bokassa was tried. While he was convicted of murder, he was found not guilty of cannibalism.)

There is no long history of sectarian hatred in this country. It exploded out of nowhere after Muslim mercenaries from Chad and Sudan joined the Seleka alliance that swept to power.

'Polarising' reporting
The Seleka were accused of murdering Christians in large numbers, of raping women and looting as they crossed the country. Christians formed self-defence groups, doing their own share of killing.

Western diplomats here blame the foreign media, too, in particular French TV and radio.

Reporting a simple "Muslim against Christian" story misrepresented what began as ethnic and political violence, they say: It polarised the two communities.

This is a complex country - with perhaps 200 ethnic groups and languages - but increasingly people see themselves this way. Last Friday, when the president resigned, we filmed a Christian crowd happily singing: "Today, we're going to kill Muslims."

"Mad Dog" Magloire's crime was a singular act. It might have been the result of his own demons, not a symptom of a sectarian conflict.

But as we interviewed him, a small crowd gathered, all Christian. They shook his hand and patted his head, smiling and laughing as he, for the first time, smiled broadly. To them, he was a hero.

That does not augur well for the future of the Central African Republic.

Whoa, things are getting pretty bad out there. Shocking.

That leg story is quite horrific.

So one clown sees a guy on a bus he doesn't like and follows him and it ends in murder and cannibalism.

Two Irish police officers have been left traumatized after they discovered the ‘cannibalized’ body of a murder victim in the Dublin suburb of Castleknock.

Newspaper reports on Monday morning say that devout Catholic Tom O’Gorman was cut up by his murderer, who then ate his lungs and heart. O’Gorman was killed after a fight over a chess game.

The two officers sent to the scene of the crime have been traumatized, according to a report in the Irish Sun.

A police source told the paper, “Mr O’Gorman suffered an appalling death before his lung was removed and eaten by his killer.

“There was blood everywhere in the room. This was a brutal act of slaughter and appalling act of evil.

“The young officers who made the discovery are understandably very distressed. When they entered the house it was like walking through the gates of Hell.

“But they remained composed, secured the scene for evidence and arrested a suspect.”

It is believed the victim’s heart was also eaten.

The paper adds that police believe the 39-year-old pro-life campaigner is Ireland’s first ever known victim of cannibalism.

He was killed after a row erupted at his home in West Dublin, over the king being moved in a game of chess.

He suffered multiple knife wounds to his head and body but the report adds that detectives were shocked after discovering one of O’Gorman’s organs had been sliced from his body and eaten by his killer.

He was found lying in a pool of blood in a front sitting room after the alarm was raised in the early hours of Sunday morning.

O’Gorman worked as a journalist for Irish Catholic magazine The Voice and had been living at his family home after his mother, Anne, died 18 months ago. He had recently taken in a lodger.

The victim was also a researcher with Catholic lobby group the Iona Institute.

Iona Institute director David Quinn paid tribute to O’Connor. He said, “On behalf of everyone at The Iona Institute, I would like to express our total shock and deep sorrow at the terrible and untimely death of Tom O’Gorman. Tom was a friend as well as a work colleague to us all.

“Tom had been working as a researcher at the Iona Institute since its launch seven years ago.

“Most of us knew him from before then, in some cases all the way back to his days at UCD. He was a fond and dear friend and we will all miss him.

“We extend our commiserations to his family and above all to his sister and brother, Catherine and Paul. May Tom rest in peace.”

A new spin on taking someone to a restaurant for dinner...

Nigerian police have shut down a hotel in Anambra for serving dishes made out of human meat, according to a report.

According to the International Business Times, the police recovered two human heads wrapped in cellophane sheets when they arrested 11 people from the restaurant.

"I went to the hotel early this year, after eating, I was told that a lump of meat was being sold at N700 (£2.5), I was surprised. So I did not know it was human meat that I ate at such expensive price," a pastor who had eaten at the hotel told the Osun Defender.

Not everybody was quite so surprised, with one local vegetable seller telling the Nigerian newspaper, “Each time I came to market, because the hotel is very close to the market, I always noticed funny movements in and out of the hotel; dirty people with dirty characters always come into the hotel. So, I was not surprised when the police made this discovery.”

Boy’s head found in home of convicted Pakistani cannibals
Brothers who dug up and ate 100 corpses were recently freed from jail

Pakistani police re-arrested a convicted cannibal today after finding a young boy’s head in his home.

Mohammad Arif (35), and his brother Mohammad Farman (30), from the small town of Darya Khan in central Pakistan, served two years in jail for cannibalism and were released last year. Police said the two had dug up more than 100 corpses from the local graveyard and eaten them.

“Residents informed police after a stench emanated from the house of the two brothers. We raided the house on Monday morning and found the head of a young boy,” said district police chief Ameer Abdullah. “We have arrested one of the brothers, Mohammad Arif, and are conducting raids for the arrest of the other brother.”

Police were searching nearby graveyards to see if they had been disturbed, he said.

Two years in jail for digging up graves and eating 100 corpses?… I'm flabbergasted.

On that basis they should be sentenced to around another week in jail, assuming it's just the one more corpse this time.

South Africa cannibal: Gugulethu man 'ate love rival's heart'

South African police have arrested a man they found using a knife and fork to eat the heart of his ex-girlfriend's new lover.

The victim, aged 62, had been stabbed in his chest and neck and had a bite mark on his face, the police told the BBC.

The suspect, a Zimbabwean national, was found in the Gugulethu township near Cape Town.

He is due to be formally charged in court later on Thursday or Friday.

Western Cape Deputy Police Commissioner Sharon Jephta said police officers and witnesses had been offered counselling to cope with the trauma.

"It was very gruesome," she said.

"It's definitely a love triangle," she said.
