Cannibalism: Disturbing, Gory—Strangely Common

But Christians eat Jesus crisps all the time at Communion. Maybe the eating of other humans was more ritualistic than a necessity to their nourishment?
You've got an interesting point there.
Maybe that communion ritual (and others that preceded it) were there to wean people off the barbaric practice of cannibalism?

Very likely. Holy Communion seems to be an echo of the Dionysian mystery religions. They began as sacrificial - a man was torn to pieces and eaten by the maenads (women in a ritualistic frenzy.) In later centuries, these evolved to mystical rituals where bread and wine took the place of flesh and blood, and was understood to be an incarnation of the sacrificial god Dionysius. Dionysius himself was slain by the angry father God, as a sacrifice, but then rose back to life, and he made water into wine, etc. Quite a lot of familiar themes.

The Jews when taking Canaan took the land form the Canaanites who did practice human sacrifice. This is recorded in the Bible as well as at some dig sites. It has never been recorded amongst Christians. No cannibalism practiced by either group. Communion is symbolic.

Yes, when I said 'wean people off...', I was referring to the people who had been converted to Christianity (who may have once been cannibals) - i.e., not saying that Christianity once had cannibalism as one of its practices.

Cannibalism Study Finds People Are Not That Nutritious

While our ancient ancestors did practice cannibalism, eating other humans just couldn’t compare with taking down a mammoth.

By Erika Engelhaupt
PUBLISHED APRIL 6, 2017

Note to the prehistoric party planner: One dead mammoth can feed 25 hungry Neanderthals for a month, but cannibalizing a human would provide the crowd with only a third of a day’s calories.

Essentially, you’re a walking lunch.

Neighbours have described hearing screams before a wife was murdered, dismembered and cooked by her husband.

An inquest into the 2014 murder-suicide has heard the smell coming from the apartment of chef-turned-sex worker Marcus Volke, 27, was so bad that building managers started using air freshener in the hallways.

Volke murdered his wife MayangPrasetyo after an argument and blamed the smell on cooking, Brisbane Coroners Court heard.

Police were alerted after Volke called an electrician to deal with a power outage caused by cooking his wife's remains.

Ms Prasetyo, a trans sex worker from Indonesia, married Volke in 2013. The couple had an unorthodox relationship which Volke kept secret from his family, the Courier Mail reported, travelling the world and working as escorts on cruise ships and in brothels. ...

Yowza, that's one hell of a life - how the hell did he keep that secret?!

At least as a former chef he should have known how to cook her properly.

The well chewed bones of the Donner Party legend are shaken out once again. Will this analysis get to the tooth behind the story?

Beyond Cannibalism: The True Story of the Donner Party

The 19th-century pioneers set out for a new life when America was gobbling up land as fast as possible.

If it had worked out differently, the group of settlers that came to be known as the Donner Party would have slipped over the Sierra Nevada into California—and obscurity.

But poor planning, a series of bad decisions, and early snowstorms caused 60 of the original pioneers to become stranded in the mountains during the winter of 1846. And as hypothermia set in and food ran out, many resorted to that greatest of human taboos: cannibalism.

But who were these people? To answer that question, Michael Wallis, author of The Best Land Under Heaven: The Donner Party In The Age Of Manifest Destiny, has gone back to the beginning.

By delving into the biographies of leading party members and placing them into the religious and political context of the time, he has moved the story of the Donner Party beyond mere sensationalism to reveal uncomfortable truths about America, then and now.

Stronger evidence of ritual cannibalism in ancient Somerset, hopefully the practice has died out.

Human bones may have been engraved by cannibals as part of a ritual in SOMERSET
Joe Mellor
August 9, 2017

Human bones may have been engraved by cannibals as part of a ritual in SOMERSET around 15,000 years ago, suggests new research.

Bones found at Gough’s Cave in Cheddar Gorge feature unusual zig-zagging cuts which researchers say indicates intentional engraving.

The bones date from the Magdalenian period around 12,000 to 17,000 years ago.

Previous analysis of the human bones from Gough’s Cave found evidence of human cannibalism.

But paleontologists debate about whether some of the marks found on the bones were intentionally engraved or simply the result of butchery. ...

Looks like a Ritual Cannibal Cult has been busted. But... a guy walks into a copshop and says he's tired of eating human flesh?!

Four men have appeared in a South African court facing charges of cannibalism after one allegedly walked into a police station declaring he was "tired" of eating human flesh.

When questioned further, the man produced part of a human leg and hand.

Police then accompanied the man back to a house in KwaZulu-Natal where more body parts were found.

Four men, two of them traditional healers, were arrested and charged with murder and conspiracy to murder.

They appeared in Estcourt Magistrate's Court, about 175km (110 miles) north-west of Durban, on Monday.

A police spokesperson told the BBC that it is possible that the four young men, aged between 22 and 32 years old, are part of a bigger syndicate.

The investigation is still under way, with police urging people whose relatives have disappeared in the vicinity of Estcourt to come forward. ...

More on the SA cannibalism case.

Fear has gripped the village of Shayamoya in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province after the discovery of a decapitated body.

The family of Zanele Hlatshwayo, 25, who has been missing since July, believe she was a victim of a cannibalism ring that has so far led to the arrest of five men.

Her decomposing body was found after a man who claimed to be a traditional healer handed himself over to police last week and confessed that he was tired of eating human flesh.

Police officers had initially dismissed his statement, according to reports.

It is only after he produced a bloodied hand and foot as proof that he was immediately arrested. He led them to his rented home, where police found eight human ears in a cooking pot.

It is believed they were to be served to his customers, who were told they had magic properties and would convey money, power and protection.

Several other body parts were found stuffed in a suitcase. ...

Cannibal killer shot by police after refusing to stop eating woman he beheaded
Aphiwe Mapekula dies in hospital three days after attacking Thembisa Masumpa

A man who was accused of beheading a woman and cannibalising her corpse has died in hospital after being shot by police in South Africa.

Aphiwe Mapekula, 23, was shot in the arm, leg and stomach outside his home in Mount Frere after officers arrived to find him eating the corpse of a woman.

It is the latest incident involving cannibalism in the Eastern Cape, after four men were charged with raping, killing and "consuming" parts of a woman near Durban last month.

Police say they arrived at the scene in Mount Frere last week to find Mapekula eating the flesh of Thembisa Masumpa, 35, a woman who was known to him and who he allegedly beheaded after a family argument.

Officers told local newspaper reporters the suspect ignored several warning shots designed to stop him, before charging at the police with a knife after they opened fire.

He was taken to taken hospital, where he is also alleged to have attacked a female medic minutes after being admitted, and died three days later on 12 September.

His mother, who first raised the alarm when she saw her son attacking Ms Masumpa as she tried to leave their home, told the Daily Dispatch: “I never raised a son like this one. I never imagined this.”

Neighbours say Ms Masumpa worked at the home doing odd jobs and was washing in the backyard when she was attacked by Mapekula.

Local police spokeswoman Captain Edith Mjoko said “He killed her with a knife by cutting her throat.

“When the mother of the suspect saw what was happening she rushed and called the police to the scene.

Uh-oh. A possible zombie attack?

A suspected ‘cannibal family’ is reported to have admitted killing and eating at least 30 people over an 18-year period.

Police have found body parts including meat and skin throughout the house in southern Russia.

Pictures issued by prosecutors, too gruesome to publish, show someone’s head on a platter surrounded by oranges. Another shows a suspect with someone’s severed hand in their mouth.

A third picture shows body parts inside a jar where they were being preserved in some kind of liquid.

Dmitry Bakshaev, 35, is one of the people identified as being involved and he is said to have told police he started eating humans in 1999 – the year the head on a platter picture was taken.

I love the idea that they paused in their subhuman madness to garnish the head with slices* of orange!

You would never have caught Sawney Bean eating anything so nancified! :dinner:

*The very dubious photograph shows small whole oranges or tangerines, which, I dare say, would not have affected Mr. Bean's opinion one iota!

Now I'm wondering why such a notorious carnivore was named after a vegetable!

Yes, there are more pressing matters I should attend to. :rasp:

Three freed but four still held.

Three men suspected of cannibalism freed in SA

Three men accused of cannibalism in South Africa have been released from police custody after charges against them were provisionally withdrawn, a local newspaper reports.

They had been charged with murder and conspiracy to murder, as South Africa does not have a specific charge of cannibalism.

Prosecutors told a court in the farming town of Estcourt that the charges against the three had been provisionally withdrawn, and they may or may not be re-instated at a later stage, the Estcourt and Midlands News site reports.

AFP news agency gives a different account, saying the three had been acquitted because of a lack of evidence.

Four other men charged with them remained in police custody.

Police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse crowds of people who hurled insults at the accused as they appeared in court, AFP news agency reports.

A BRAZILIAN gang who tortured and murdered a couple ATE their body parts after raiding their home, police have claimed.

Cristina Amaral, 44, was found decayed and buried in a shallow grave alongside her husband Juvenal, 57, in the back garden of their Camaçari city home on January 9.

Forensic experts revealed Juvenal was brutally beaten, stabbed and forced to watch as his wife was raped in front of him.

Thugs held the couple hostage for at least 24 hours, before targeting Cristina because they could not find cash in their home.

Detective Maria Tereza Santos, head of homicide division said she believes the suspects "practised canibalism".

She added: "Internal organs, including the ovaries and fallopian tubes had been ripped out of the female’s body and other body parts are missing. There is no indication of where these organs are.

"We found that soft tissue had been deliberately cut and sliced from the bones of the victims. We are also investigating whether consumption took place while the victims were still alive."

The couple were brutally murdered soon after a grandmother of one of the suspects, who worked as a cleaner for the victims, told her grandson the couple had won a recent compensation claim of 70,000 reais (£15,000).

Richard Dawkins wants to know if lab-grown meat will eradicate the taboo against cannibalism.

In a tweet on March 3, the outspoken evolutionary biologist linked to an article about the possible commercialization of meat grown in a laboratory by the end of 2018. Dawkins was practically drooling, but it wasn't over the food: "I've long been looking forward to this," he wrote. "What if human meat is grown? Could we overcome our taboo against cannibalism?"

Lab-grown meat, he continued, would be an "interesting test case" pitting consequentialist morality against "yuck reaction" absolutism. In other words, lab-grown human meat might be ethical in the sense that no one experiences any bad consequences — no killing, no desecrating corpses — but humans might still instinctually recoil at the idea of eating it.

Dawkins is bloody obsessed with cannibalism! I've seen him twice, and both times - in different contexts - he used cannibalism as his example of a taboo, when talking about moral relativism.

The bar for giving the mentally-disturbed their 15 minutes of fame keeps on being raised, doesn’t it? It used to be that all you had to do was paint pictures with your own poo, or take a photo of a crucifix submerged in urine. Now the desperate, pathetic and decadent really have to jump through hoops.
