I'd never heard of this before, but happened upon the statue in the pic below in the large back garden of what's now Whitby Youth Hostel.
I had taken it to be a dragon, when I asked at reception though they said it was the Cholmley Griffin, which appears on the Cholmley family coat of arms.
Thought I'd throw it in here as I couldn't find a thread for heraldic beasties.
Not much showing up about this apart from a couple of historical descriptions of the Cholmley family crest, which list it as a demi-griffin, usually with a helmet in a front claw.
No idea why this one appears to be legless (perhaps he's been to the not too distant White Horse and Griffin
