Not only the Belgian virologist Marc Van Ranst, but also a mosque in eisden (municipality of Maasmechelen) in Belgium, would be a target of the fugitive Belgian soldier Jürgen Conings.
He is also said to have explored the mosque, as he would have previously explored the surroundings of Van Ranst's house.
In his farewell letter, the armed soldier writes that he did everything he could to prevent this situation, but that he did not succeed, according to Het Nieuwsblad. Conings says he "can't and won't go on with what the future looks like now" and denounces Belgian politicians and virologists, who he says hate speech and "determine how we live."
The soldier seems to have accepted that Belgian authorities will capture him. He writes that he is aware that he has become an enemy of the state and does not seem to fear a possible death.
Conings' girlfriend called on the fugitive soldier on national television on Friday night to surrender. "If you're still alive, don't kill. Make the story end, that it stops."
The Belgian Minister of Justice, Vincent Van Quickenborne, is very concerned about possible violent incidents. "He walks around with weapons of war and has the explicit objective of making victims," the justice minister said.
Conings' seized vehicle was found to have a booby trap hidden inside. It is unclear what detonator was found in the car, but Quickenborne confirmed that war munitions had been placed to kill.
Support for the fugitive soldier has also emerged in recent days. In the Facebook group Als 1 achter Jürgen (As one behind Jurgen), 23,000 sympathizers have gathered.
