Pair charged after mother’s body stuffed into suitcase

Indonesian police charged an American couple with murder after the body of the woman’s 62-year-old mother was found stuffed in a suitcase on the resort island of Bali.

Heather Mack, 19, and her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, 21, both from Chicago, were arrested on Wednesday in Bali’s Kuta area, a day after the body of Sheila von Wiese-Mack was found inside the boot of a taxi parked in front of the St Regis Bali Resort.

The charges made yesterday are based on witnesses and crime scene evidence, said Bali deputy police chief, Brig Gen Gusti Ngurah Raharja Subyakta.

Police said the couple hired the taxi and then placed the suitcase inside the boot. They told the taxi driver that they were going to check out of the hotel and would return.

After they didn’t show up, hotel security guards who found blood spots on the suitcase suggested the driver take the taxi to the police station, where officers opened the suitcase and discovered the body.

The couple told investigators that von Wiese-Mack was killed by robbers while they managed to escape, according to the police chief for Bali’s provincial capital of Denpasar, Col Djoko Hari Utomo. ...

Body parts man had brain surgery

A mystery man whose body parts were found in rubbish at a waste recycling plant had undergone brain surgery, tests have shown.

Mystery corpse parts 'dissolved in acid'

In a scenario straight from US crime series Breaking Bad, the killers may have submerged the dismembered limbs in an acid bath or lime mixture in the hope they would be stripped to the bone quickly. But when the process did not work correctly, or took too long, the killers or people who chopped up the body, may have panicked and dumped the remains in bins instead.

Tests on the body parts discovered at the Thornton's Waste Recycling facility on Ballyfermot's Killeen Road on July 31 have found traces of chemicals which are still being analysed.

Gardai are still trying to identify who it was that was brutally killed and dismembered. ...

Gravedigger suspended after picture with corpse and dead man’s relative shared on Whatsapp

A gravedigger has been suspended and a family subjected to ridicule after posing with the corpse of a man who died 23 years ago.

An image of council worker Celestino Reyna, 55, alongside the cadaver and the husband of the dead man’s niece, was sent to her work colleagues via Whatsapp.

The photo then ended up on social media, where is was then widely shared – and Mr Reyna recognised by his employers.

‘We never thought this could have such serious consequences, and I did not want to show any lack of respect for my uncle,’ the apologetic niece, who wishes to remain anonymous, said.

Local councillor Felipe Aldeguer confirmed the gravedigger had been suspended but didn’t think he’d be fired.

‘At the end of the day the man’s family were there and it seems they were the ones that instigated this. He just foolishly agreed to what they wanted,’ he added.

Spanish police also confirmed that the two men were facing a court probe on suspicion of profaning a body, independent of the council inquiry.

I read this several times. Then I clicked on the link and saw that, according to the header in the window, "Family photos like this one from Sapin* shouldn't be taken . . ."

I can see that the second paragraph nearly makes sense, when we have worked out how a council worker, thanks to a disruptive clause, appears to have changed gender. I still expect to see a whole family posing with the corpse, as promised in paragraph one.

I fear there would be complaints if I were to pin up this illustrated example in a classroom!:gaga:

*A souvenir from Sapin - land of soap? :?:

Yup, I had to work out who'd sent/received the photo, it bugged me too!

It matters because, well, it's bad enough to do something like that at work but it's worse to send it on yourself to other people. The worker might've thought he was doing the family a favour by holding up the corpse for a photo, in which case he was acting misguidedly rather than callously. Still wrong, of course.

Used to know someone who worked in a sensitive job who seemed to get away with various misdemeanours, until the silly sod took a photo of a vulnerable client showing off his naked ripped torso and sent it to a friend. Instant dismissal, well-deserved. Heh.

Body 'left near bins' in Ely claim prompts ambulance apology

An ambulance service has apologised after claims a body was left lying next to dustbins overnight at a station.
The alleged incident involved the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) in Ely, Cambridgeshire, last month.

Chief executive Anthony Marsh said the trust was "very sorry for what happened" and had started a "thorough investigation".
Although the service apologised, it refused to confirm the claims or say exactly what it was apologising for.

However, Dr Marsh said the ambulance service was "working with the family and everyone who responded to the patient".
An EEAST spokesman confirmed the investigation involved "the transportation of a deceased patient", but said he could not comment further as inquiries were ongoing.

The claims were published in the Wisbech Standard after a "whistleblower" approached the newspaper.

Car chase through Sydney as hearse carrying coffin stolen from outside funeral home
A man with dementia in Australia stole a hearse with a coffin on board, forcing the bereaved relatives to set off in hot pursuit
By AFP
11:30AM GMT 28 Nov 2014

An Australian family has spoken of their shock after a man jumped out of the bushes and drove off in a hearse carrying the body of a relative just before his funeral.

Hayley West and husband Tobias Richardson were preparing for the funeral service of her brother-in-law Seth at a school building in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney when the carjacker made his move.
"Just as we were talking in the foyer and one of the funeral directors was getting the trolley to put the coffin on, a guy jumped out of the bushes and jumped into the hearse and started it up," Miss West told ABC radio.

"The funeral home guy was banging on the window, saying 'What are you doing? You can't drive away in a hearse'.
"We are all standing around, going 'Oh my God, the hearse has been stolen'."
Mr Richardson jumped into his own car to pursue the thief, as Miss West called police, and an aghast crowd watched the chase unfold.

...

"It is anticipated that no further police action will be taken regarding the incident."
Miss West said the funeral service carried on as planned after the hearse was returned, and that Seth Richardson would have seen the funny side of the incident.
"He would have thought it was hilarious." 8)

A small community of Christians in Canada left the body of a deceased member for six months trusting God to resurrect him from the dead. The Crown found no criminal intent and the grieving widow was ordered to seek public health counseling.

The unusual case was resolved on Monday as Kaling Wald, 50, pledged guilty to failing to notify the authorities of her husband Peter’s death.

The 52-year-old, who suffered from diabetes, got a leg infection sometime in March. But he refused to go to hospital, trusting God to cure him. Eventually the disease took over and he slipped into coma and died sometime around March 20, according to the agreed statement of facts read out in court.

Mrs. Wald covered the body with two blankets, the head with a toque (beanie), padlocked the bedroom door and sealed vents to keep the decomposition stench from the house. She believed her husband would be eventually resurrected from and return to his family.

“We were trusting God. We thought, ‘OK, Lord, you know better,’” Wald told the Hamilton Spectator after the court hearings. ...

He might have been resurrected on Day One but then starved to death being padlocked in a room for 6 months.

A dead body was left near bins in an ambulance station for more than three hours so ambulance crews would not have to work late.

The body of James Harrison, who was in his 30s, was found in Littleport, Cambridgeshire in September.

A serious incident review said delays in taking him to a mortuary could have affected post-mortem results.

The East of England Ambulance Service Trust has apologised and said the incident "should never have happened".

A paramedic has been advised to refer himself to a health workers' regulatory body, which has the power to impose disciplinary sanctions.

He has also been removed from his role and is now working elsewhere within the trust under supervision.

It sounds as if Shaynna is heading into ex-girlfriend territory herself...

This odd and graphic story was published in the Andersonville Intelligencer on April 22, 1880.

South Bend, Ind., March 22 - Several months ago the grave of Sarah Platts, a young lady who died of consumption, was found disturbed, and an examination showed that the head of the corpse was missing. What led to the discovery was the finding of a human jawbone by Fred Auer, a farmer, who lived near the county graveyard, some eight miles from the city, where the body was buried. The fact that only the head was taken threw suspicions on an amateur phrenologist named Gordon Truesdale. Truesdale occupied a small farm in the vicinity with his wife and family of four girls, the oldest not more than eight years old. He was a handsome, broad-shouldered fellow, with a fair education, but lazy and shiftless. His great hobby was phrenology, and he occasionally lectured on that subject in country school-houses. His ambition to possess a collection of skulls was well known in the neighborhood, and the desecration of the Platts girl's grave was laid at his door, although he was never openly charged with it.

About three weeks ago Truesdale went to a physician and asked if a person could become poisoned in handling a dead body. He received an affirmative reply and appeared to be much troubled. He complained to his wife that his nose was paining him terribly and he believed he was taking the erysipelas. He began doctoring himself with bread-and-milk poultices, but without success. His face began to swell rapidly, and in less than three days it and his head became twice their natural size and lost all semblance to human shape. A physician was called in against the wishes of Truesdale. He found the man suffering terribly. His lips were drawn by the tension of the skin and writhed themselves away from the teeth in unceasing pain. The cuticle across the bridge of the nose and over the forehead was so distended with the mattery substance underneath that it seemed as if it must burst every moment. The eyes were swollen almost to bursting from their sockets and were turned with pain until hardly anything but the whites could be seen. It was evident that a terrible poison was slowly but surely permeating the man's whole system.

The physician, after a careful examination of the unwilling patient, cut open his skin from about the center of his nose almost to the roots of his hair, and then made another across the forehead almost from temple to temple. From these incisions there oozed a mass of loathsome, detestable putrescence, so terrible in its stench that the attendants, save one, ran from the house. Other incisions were made in different parts of the scalp, from which the hair had been shaved, and from these this terribly offensive matter oozed constantly, until the swelling was reduced and the head and face assumed nearly their normal size. Attempts were then made to free the incisions of matter by injecting water into them. It was noticed that when water was forced into the cut in the forehead it poured out of the holes in the scalp. As one of the attendants said, "it seemed as if all the flesh between the skin and bone had turned into corruption and ran out."

When Mr. Truesdale was told that he could not possibly recover, he called his wife into the room and confessed to her that he robbed the Platts girl's grave, and referred to a certain night when he left the house and refused to tell her where he went at the time when he committed the crime. He said that he dug down to the head of the coffin, broke it open and, taking his knife, cut around the neck of the corpse through the flesh to the bone. He then placed one of his feet on the breast of the corpse, and, taking the head in his hands, pulled and jerked and twisted it until it came off by mere force. He afterward disjointed the lower jaw and threw it where Fred Auer found it. He closed his confession by telling her where the skull would be found, under the straw in a certain manger in the stable. It was found there and given up to the Platts family.

The last three days of Truesdale's existence were terrible, not only to himself but to those who watched him. The poison from some corpse (for it is believed he had recently opened several graves,) which was communicated to his system by picking a raw spot on the inside of his nose, appeared to course through every vein in his body. Not only was his person offensive to the eye, but the odor and heat of his breath was so offensive that it was impossible for the attendants to wait on him properly. The breath was so poisonous that when one of the attendants held his hand six inches from the dying man's mouth it stung the flesh like hundreds of nettles. Those who waited on him were obliged to wear gloves, as it was impossible to wash the odor from their hands. The day he died his flesh was so rotten that it seemed as if it would drop from the bones it touched, and his eyes actually decayed until they became sightless.

For two days before his death a coffin had been in readiness, and the orders of the physician were to place him in it as soon as the breath left his body and get him under the ground immediately. After his death none of the attendants had the temerity to touch the corpse, for fear of being poisoned, so they gathered the sheets on which the body lay at each end, and thus lifted it into the coffin. The lid was quickly screwed down, but before a wagon could be procured the body swelled and burst it off. It was then strapped on, but when the coffin was taken from the wagon at the graveyard, just at daylight, it again flew off, and the body appeared to swell visibly before the horrified attendants' eyes. The fetid, noisome stench from the putrid mass within was such that no one could attempt to replace the cover, and the coffin was covered from sight as hurriedly as possible.

The day after the funeral, or burial, rather, the wife of Truesdale was confined at a neighbor's house, this fifth child also being a girl. The Truesdale house will not be fit to occupy for several days, as all efforts to fumigate it thus far have failed. The doors and windows have been left open day and night, but the stench is still as bad as when he died. As one of the attendants said, "It still seems as if you could cut the air in that house with a knife."
