Parents report after seance at children's graves in Leusden
A group of 42 parents has reported grave desecration after a séance at rusthof cemetery in Leusden.
The complaint is directed against six members of a spiritual group who held the séance on September 11. Charges have also been filed against the director of the cemetery who gave permission for the ritual, reports RTV Utrecht.
There is still a lot of uncertainty about what happened at the cemetery. It is certain that a spiritual group gathered in the dark at children's graves. The group would have tried to get in touch with the spirits of deceased children.
The case came to light because a father found a camera left behind at his child's grave. In the images he saw unknown adults who had gathered in the dark at the children's graves.
Not long after the incident came into the public eye, Mayor Lucas Bolsius apologized. In a letter to the relatives, he stated that "a group of spiritual people" with the permission of the director of the cemetery was researching the energies of deceased people. That happened outside opening hours because it is quieter then.
In October, the municipality held a meeting where relatives could ask questions. According to many parents, real answers were not forthcoming. That is why they are now choosing to go to court.
Before the group declaration, two parents already reported grave desecration individually. The two also want the congregation to disclose the identities of the members of the spiritual group. "I have a weird taste of it in my mouth. Why are you so secretive?", says one of the two, Floor Drost-Laabidi, at RTV Utrecht.
At the end of October it was announced that the National Ombudsman will investigate the séance. After that research, the congregation is considering bringing parents who wish to do so into contact with the spiritual group. But Drost-Laabidi takes too long. "We don't want any more postponement. This just keeps muddling along. It really doesn't make any sense like that," he says. Together with his wife Radia, Floor has two daughters who are at Rusthof.
I sure hope in his case, it's both those things that aren't buried with his body! Yikes!!heart and soul of Argentine soccer, is apparently buried without one of those things.
The post-mortem examination was carried out by Dr Alistair Bentley, who was then Northern Ireland’s deputy state pathologist.
He found that Maureen’s body had 34 unexplained fractures to her chest and a broken bone in her neck.
Dr Bentley confirmed there were no obvious rib fractures on the X-rays taken when she was admitted to hospital.
He noted there was only a small amount of bruising associated with two of the 34 rib fractures, “strongly suggesting that the vast majority of them were sustained after death, probably as the body was being moved”.
Last autumn, the family said they had been told by a former hospital employee that bodies were being transported on trolleys with boxes on top of them.
Relatives have been campaigning for an independent inquiry into what happened.
Internal inquiries at Altnagelvin Hospital and the Coroner's Office have failed to establish who was responsible for the fractures.
Former deputy secretary of state Paul Goggins and Health Minister Michael McGimpsey previously recommended a joint investigation by the Northern Ireland and parliamentary Ombudsman into the January 2007 death.
Mr McGinley said it had been a relief to finally find out the truth.
"What happened to my mother's body was an accident, and hopefully all this will come out within weeks.
There is to be an enquiry into how deceased parents' bodies are treated in UK hospitals.
This is partly due to the campaigning of the McGinley family.
Maureen McGinley died in December 2006 of natural causes at 78 in a Londonderry hospital. Her body was taken to Belfast for a post-mortem where it was found to have sustained more than 30 fractures after death.
The cause of the injuries has not been ascertained although there seems to have been negligence rather than malice.

“It is estimated that 30% of the patients that have received CPR will end up with a fractured rib or a broken sternum. Multiple ribs may also break but this is a small price to pay when a life is being saved.
Elderly patients are more likely to suffer from a rib injury than younger patients, as their bones are more fragile.”
