On a recent cycling trip to the lake District, we found a seemingly abandoned medical set up in the loft of a near derelict building near our cottage. I took these pix on the last day; everything was covered in dust and rubble with no evidence of recent use. My friend remarked that "something" he'd seen from the first visit a few days prevously no longer seemed to be there... at which point we left the clinic, the cottage and the town!

What in the name of God was it?? It's a long time since I was that creeped out by something.

[Emp edit: The piccies are a bit too big for the forum so I'm switching them to links]

Creepy.

I can only assume that the room is simply being used as storage space.

But what is that device that looks like a bycicle helmet?

What item did you friend see that was missing?

It looks like it's been used for something, if it was storage it'd just be dumped there in a random manner surely? Did the building have any history behind it? Was that the only room containing anything?

I'm intrigued by this & I can't identify the equipment but that thing has to be some sort of air blower. My money is on a personal beauty salon set up although I'm not familar with the sort of equipment they use in such establishments so that's a wild guess :D

Does look chillingly like a torture room though.

Looks like some crazed fan of "Conspiracy Theory" is re-creating a set from the film, albeit out of rummaged bits.

Yep. I'd have been freaked out if I'd discovered that. It looks like something you'd find in a psycho's basement.

At first glance I thought it was an outboard motor. On second glance, a cake mixer.

A vacuum cleaner? With storage space below for all the attachments. Although one thing in the tray below looks like a distributor cap. :?:

(by the way, vacuum cleaners are the work of the devil! )

On the first picture where did the yellowish tube lead to/end that was comming out of the white unit with a switch on?
If we are talking dodgy clinics a couple of thoughts would be surgery on illegal immagrants (Like the kidney doner thing.) or illegal abortions?
People do keep some strange things. A couple of years ago I lived in a tower block owned by the council. On the ground floor were indoor sheds that you got to through a locked door (You had a fob to open it.) Pretty creepy for a start as even if you had company there was just a labrynth of corridors and doors. Anyway, some of the sheds had been left open and of course you have a look...(One of them had a vibrating willy toy in it! lol. Not a vibrator but pink and soft like a cuddly toy and had smilie face on it. Sorry, of topic. :D ) One of them had such wierd stuff in it including a big black full face mask, like the ones they had in the war, and a big brown breifcase that wouldn't open. Canisters and stuff. Also a commode! Lots of other wierd stuff too but it was about the time the riacin bomb making stuff first came out so I was a tad worried.

illegal abortions was my first thought, but i have no idea whether that goes with the pictures. macabre, anyway.

That's what I thought too.

That or it's the remnants of the Santilli alien autopsy film set... ;)

Oh god thats so horrible. My mind makes me sick sometimes. That lamp at the END of that bed thing is there for a reason.

More clues below...

Realspooky: the missing item was a "gentleman's shiny magazine"

Olueves: it was a small, slate cottage. Some old vinyl settees stacked downstairs.

Gncxx : I'd love to think it was a cake mixer

akaWiintermoon: see last pic below for appandage to tube, modelled by my friend.

An illegal abortion set up...well, maybe but isn't it legal, and safer, to get an NHS abortion? I ran the name on one of the "dials" machines [Taylor Reeson] through google and it seems they make "Beauty " equipment, so maybe Dr Bastard hit the nail on the head, but wouldn't you go on the High St? There has to be an unlicensed aspect to it...

BTW If anyone wants the details of the cottage I can get you a good off-season deal for it....

I hope he washed his hands afterward!

On the topic of Urban Exploration, on this website http://www.duncancumming.co.uk/ue/partick/ are some pictures of an abandoned scrap yard in Partick, Glasgow.

Except, that's not all it was.

The building you see in the pictures tower.jpg and scrap.jpg are infact a rehearsal studio that I used to run a few years ago, along with the rest of my (former) band, and a few other bands. It had been Babelfish rehearsal studios prior to that, run by a couple of guys from Partick.

The rehearsal studio building was the top floor, and the rest of the place was the scrap yard. The part of the building underneath was a ruin, and was sealed off from the top (the whole place was literally falling apart). I have hundreds of photos of the place, and a few camcorder videos of it - including the very last night the place was open, after we decided to vacate (as mentioned before, the place was literally falling apart), somewhat grudgingly, seeming as how the place had been condemned about two years before.

One video has us locking the place up for the very last time - I watched it recently, and it was still emotional - it was a horrible, rat infested, damp, stinking hole of a building, but it suited us, and we called it home.

There's also photos of a visit to Gartloch Hospital, a mental hospital very close to where I grew up. A few of my close family members actually worked there, including my Mum. I remember going there with them when I was little. I even posted a story here that happened to me in the woods just outside the grounds of the hospital - in the PAN(IC) IN THE WOODS thread in the IHTM forum.

Just found that the address on the brown machine may correspond to a Harris Electronics in London that specialise in hair removal and electrolysis. I don't know if that makes the whole thing more or less disturbing.

I'd love to know what that cone implement is though. Of all the things I thought might be attached to that hose, I never would have guessed that

Nice detective work drbastard :yeay:

So it appears to be a home 'beauty salon' set up that someone left in their loft when they moved house, rather than bother to take it to the skip?.

Even so, they're still creepy pics. Thanks for posting them Zhair10 :)

Erm, remove hair from whom, and why? Why would some person let someone do this their flat? "I'll just strap you to this table, and then we'll get rid of that nasty body hair, luv." EEEEEuuuueeewwwwww !!!

I'd ask the local police to bring in corpse sniffing dogs.

to provide light maybe?

Due to the "gentleman's shiny magazine", the light at the END of the bed, and the tube attached to the cone thing, and the pastic dish/bowl underneath the machine, I am guessing that someone was receiving and/or giving enemas for a thrill. I have heard that this is a fairly common way of getting off, sorry to be unpleasant (I have HEARD this, I do NOT know this from personal experience). Also, colonic irrigation is linked to the beauty/health industry, so I would imagine the machine could be manufactured by the same company who make hair removal machines. I really hope the guy in the photo washed his hands afterwards.

Guessing from the "men's magazine", hair removal equipment and the lamp at the end of the bed: a sperm donor clinic maybe?

Or maybe genital, erm, "enhancement"? (perhaps they were driven out of business by the internet scammers with their pills purporting to do the same job in a rather less painful and potentially dangerous way...)

Ugh. But wouldn't the examing table have some sort of stirrups (as in OB/GYN examing tables)? I didn't see any in the photo, but maybe I just missed them.

The place where you found this wasn't called Royston Vasey by any chance...

I think you've hit the nail on the head.
Perhaps it's a dominatrix's setup that hasn't been used for quite a while?
The room looks like it's in a bit of a state, so I can't imagine anybody is still using it.

Ok, I wasted some time thinking about this [and taking others opinions into account], because even though you could come up with something completely rational, it seems to freak people out on a subconscious level. Why?

Scenario one is that it was a private beauty salon. Evidence is erm the thingy with the hose and the chair...naah. Wouldn't the walls be more cheerfully decorated? Hang on there is a mothers day card on the wall. Still. The state of the walls just doesn't tally with the beauty concept.

Scenario two is kinky. Enemas and small torture. A private prostitute working upstairs? Customers wouldn't care about the walls and she might well be a mum. That would explain the "gentlemans relaxation" mag.

Scenario three. All the stuff has just been stored there and was used somewhere else. Could be. The lamp at the end has its plug neatly twisted around the base [so it didn't necessarily originate at that spot]. However the equipment with the buttons [oh dear girlie-talk] seems to have a place deliberately for them. The vaccuum thingy looked first to me like cleaning equipment but then after looking longer at it, it looks scary. Made to look like a professional cleaning item [including the tray] but none of the attachments make any sense.

Scenario four. It was the hideout of some sick couple who used to kidnap young girls and then perform some hideous operations on them, before killing them and disposing of them by dissolving them in acid.

You know what, I know I've just repeated what others said but it was in order to focus my mind, because I really love this thread. However I am still as confused as before and the eerie feeling is also still there...
WHY?

anybody remember that nip/tuck episode where there was this guy who performed illegal sex-change operations in a very run-down room?

As a Cumbrian born and bred, I have to say that this freaks me out. Can I ask where the cottage is? If its somewhere like Egremont or Cockermouth then I'd be really worried.

The Mother's Day Card is actually another layer of "creepy". It was lying on the counter, still in its cellophane, colours long faded away. ("A boy's best friend is his mother!" , card undelivered as mother is a mummified corpse in the next room...) I suspect it is something along these lines of a salon, with a undercurrent of "desperation" rather than "pampering".

The machines, presumably quite expensive, are almost certainly to do with something like electrolosis. I don't think they've been brought in as props. I think it's the studio who knows what they are doing but has either lost, or never had, the licence to do it.

Could be, but they are laid out in a "working" set up still.

What's emerging as the most interesting aspect of the responses is how everyone sees or imagines something different, relating to their own personal fears (or desires!). My first thought on finding it was "torture chamber", possibly because there has been a lot of it in the news recently, with US & British atrocities bringing "torture" a lot closer to home. After IDing the machines, it would seem to be more benevolent... if still very weird. The dark thoughts and grim scenarios haven't completely gone away though!

(PS It's near Windermere)
