David Beckham Paid Off My Mortgage!

Here's an old one, which I initially thought had the ring of truth about it. Don't know why I believed it, but I did. Once.

A friend of mine told me the tale that a friend of a friend of his (don't say anything, alright - just typing that makes me squirm) was looking forward to a short break at the Belfry (Golf club, about 5 miles from where I'm sitting, but that's not really relevant) to see the Ryder Cup a few years back, when he got a strange phone call from the management there, to say that they had been approached by a third party who wished to see the Ryder Cup, and who, upon finding them fully booked, was willing to offer this FOAFOAF a substantial amount of money (say £5000) for his room for the weekend. Well, as this chap had planned this trip far in advance, he said thanks, but no thanks.

A few days later, this chap got another call, saying the third party was really keen, and what could persuade this chap to give up his holiday? So the guy said "you could pay my mortgage off", just for fun. There was a pause, and the caller asked, "how much is that?". The reply "£100,000". End of subject, you would think!

A few days later, however, the chap got a letter in the post. Inside was a cheque for £100,000, in the name of Mr D.Beckham.

When I heard this, it sounded convincing, or at least possible. I mean, £100,000 was probably a week's wages for Beckham back then (more like 2 days now!), so why wouldn't he splash his cash to get what he wanted?

A year or so later, though, a work colleague said to me "have you heard about David Beckham" and proceeded to tell me the same story, only this time, it seems that Mr B had forgotten to book tickets for the Rugby Union World Cup! Now either he's monumentally bad at booking his holidays, or he likes doing things on the spur of the moment, or I've been taken in by an admittedly quite funny UL.

So go on, all you out there sniggering at my gullibility, who else has heard a version of this?

Yes! My older brother told me this happened to a friend of his about 4/5 years ago.

At that time my brother was a policeman in Cheshire. Another copper was getting married and had booked the reception at a posh hotel/country club in Cheshire ( I was originally told the name but can't remember it now).

The chap in question received a call from the hotel managment asking if he would consider changing the venue of his wedding reception, saying that another party were after the same date and would meet his expenses of another venue, pay for his wedding reception, guests accomodation etc. On principle, my brothers friend said no.

A day or two later, the hotel management rang again, saying that the other party would pay for the honeymoon too. I think at this point he said no again, by now thinking it was some strange wind up.

The last call came a little later; the other party after the venue would pay for everything previously mentioned, plus the couple's mortgage!

At this point, the chap in question said yes and a few days later an enormous cheque arrived signed.........

............. Victoria Beckham!!!!!

......well, my brother swore this was true about 4 years ago, saying the Beckhams wanted the venue for a party or christening do for one of their kids (I don't remember which one). I suppose they didn't live too far away at the time, which lent a bit of credibility to the story. And no, I never saw the cheque!

It's a shame if the tale isn't true as I've been telling the story for years. I shall e-mail my brother shortly and get more details from him.

Yeah, I've been told this story too. More or less word for word the same as the second version.

It was 3 or 4 years ago, and someone told me it as something that had happened to a friend of theirs.

Can't for the life of me remember who it was that told me though.
Thats gonna bug me all day now.

Nice to know I'm not the only one to fall for this one.

Sorry to have shattered a few illusions, though.

Coming soon, a SUL (sub-urban legend) : Bill Oddie redirects the traffic!

Bet you can't wait!

just heard the same story today, only it happened in northern ireland when the england football squad were over.

Where there's smoke, there's fire.

As Peripart said

Big earners no doubt will sometimes do this sort of thing. And several people would be involved, or at least know about it. And as they tell their friends, and pass the story on, it becomes a game of Chinese whispers.

And once it hits the internet, the story explodes! 8)

Didn't think I'd be replying to a thread I started 4 months ago, but that Donald Trump thing has echoes of "Howard and Me", the film about the guy who unwittingly rescues Howard Hughes in the desert, and then claims to have received a copy of Hughes' will, naming the guy as beneficiary.

Can't remember if the tale was based on true events or not, though.

When i was in Australian last year I was told a similar story about Kerry Packer.

He is a well known gambler and was at a casino and winning big, he gave the waitress a tip of something like $10,000. He asked her what shw would do with it and she said, "pay off my mortgage". He asked her how big her mortgage was and she said $100,000.

Anyway he left and later when she was leaving the cashier called her over and gave her a cheque for $100,000. signed K. Packer.

Yes it was, the film was Melvin and Howard and the real Melvin Dummar appears in a diner during it. Whether Melvin really picked up Howard in the desert is still a controversial point today. He never got any money out of it as far as I know.

Hmm, its more likely a money scam don't you think? Like those Nigerian ones where they want to pay over the odds for stuff on ebay, then when youve spent the money they cancel the cheque or something?

Instead of offering one fella as much as he wanted, why not just phone round everyone with a booking until someone took the original amount (which someone surely would)?

Presumably, for the purposes of this story, Beckham's advisers would have rung round a few ticket-holders, and upped the ante when no-one took the bait. I'm not saying I buy the tale any more, far from it, but even David Beckham would presumably not just offer huge amounts of money to the first person he came across.

No doubt we'll get new variations of this one:

David Beckham 'helped in car breakdown'

A father-of-two has said he was in "absolute awe" after David Beckham stopped and helped when his car broke down on a Hertfordshire roundabout.
Paul Long said the former England captain was the first motorist to pull over and assist him with his Nissan Primera in Ware on Wednesday.

"I couldn't believe it," said Mr Long, who was taking Josephine, six, and eight-year-old Fabian to school.
"He asked if we were OK and pushed the car to safety."

Mr Long, who spoke to Richard Bacon on BBC 5 live, added: "We were on the A10 roundabout, which was pretty dangerous, and had been stuck there for about 10 minutes.
"Eventually I saw a car pull over in the distance and a man in a hoodie got out.
"He pulled the hood down and as he got nearer to the car I realised it was David Beckham.
"My instinctive reaction was to say: 'You're David Beckham'.

"He asked if we were OK and I said we'd broken down and could he push us to the side.
"When we'd pushed the car to safety - and I have to say another man stopped to help by this point - he asked if we were OK and I said: 'David Beckham, I love you, mate'.
"All the way through he was smiling.
"He got us out of a sticky situation, it could have been quite nasty."

With his move to Spurs collapsing his PR folk obviously had to find other ways to keep the cult of Beckham alive in the UK.

I heard he was a right tyrant, would give a door a bang, a regular tool bag whose good fortune has driven from his tiny mind what little sense he had.... course I could be wrong and I hope I am.

In another footballer as Samaritan story has anyone else heard the legion of tales concerning wonder player Balotelli? there is probably a thread isn't there? yep

A couple of weeks ago a friend told me about her auntie's friend who had had their wedding at Leeds Castle in Kent rescheduled because of the date for a baby naming ceremony for the Beckhams' youngest child.
...and the compensation? Yes you've guessed it ! The couple's mortgage was paid in full !

Reading back through the thread it's amazing how long this UL has been going !

I think the real mystery here is why the hell don't the beckhams invest in a calender? It's all last minute and incresingly expensive for the poor buggers

Well, it's funny coming across this thread. I have no idea how fake the stories are on this topic as a whole, but only recently did I find out some family friends have said they had their wedding paid for in full, and a received a lump sum from the Beckhams.

So this story doesn't come from a "friend, of a friend, of a friend..." but people actually known to my family. People they've known for 14 years.

Very strange stuff!! I have no idea what to think but it all seems too crazy!! LOL.

That's like the snake in the bed urban myth of a couple of years ago, whenever you heard it, it had happened to someone the teller knew, even though that would have meant a snake in half the beds in the UK (ooer).

HH - It'd be fascinating to see whether you could actually speak to the people to whom this is said to have happened. I hate to be a doubter, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that these family friends would tell you that it really happened to some friends of their friends, and so on.

Maybe, just maybe, David Beckham or Donald Trump (or Kerry Packer, Howard Hughes, or someone) did once pay a large sum of money to secure someone else's wedding venue or honeymoon suite, but I'd be amazed if we ever track down the actual person to whom that happened.

Of course, as has ben suggested before, it may also be that this is happening all the time. Celebrities with too much money and bad planning skills are simply deciding where to stay at very short notice, and then offering ever-larger wads of cash until they get the room of their choice!

Actually, I don't think that any of this stories are true. It is really very common these days to make such stories about celebrities. Why these guys are so interested in creating stories about guys like David Beckham?

That's a subject almost worthy of a thread of its own. Actually, we may already have a cult of celebrity" thread here somewhere.

Just what is it that encourages people to make up tales like this about the rich and famous (while there may well be a grain of truth in this topic, I think it's safe to say that 90% of the type of stories on this thread are not true)?

There is one about 2 girls out for a meal in a dublin when the waiter asks them to move table becauise Bono and a few friends are coming and they like to sit at that particular table. These girls are then outside having a cig later and end up talking to this guy and saying Bono knicked their table. When they go to pay the bill they find out that it has been paid for by Bruce Springsteen, the guy they had the cig with and Bono's dinner guest.

This was told to me by my girlfriends best friend and as soon as she told it to us i told her it was a load of bollox, an urban legend. She of course said that it was true that it happened to a friend of hers. Fast forward 3 to 4 months and we are watching Grahem Nortan and a girl comes on in the red chair segment at the end of the show and tells virtually the identical story. Luckily my girlfriends friend was there when we were watching this, she didn't recognise this woman and had to admit the story was a load of old balls.

So David Beckham didn't actually give the family 100k out of his own pocket as the headlines all imply, rather he was just the celebrity postman for a TV company and its sponsors money.

Blend it like Beckham: Star buys paramedic hot drink
2 February 2016

London Ambulance Service
David Beckham bought hot drinks for a paramedic and her patient after he spotted them waiting for an ambulance in the cold.
Cycle response paramedic Catherine Maynard was helping an elderly man, who had fallen in central London.
Ms Maynard said the former England captain greeted them, got in his car and returned 10 minutes later with cups of tea and coffee.
"We were both very amused and flattered," she said.

Ms Maynard said she had been trying to keep her patient warm as they waited for an ambulance near Endsleigh Street.
"All of a sudden, I looked up and saw someone who looked like David Beckham walking past us," she said.
"He said hello and got in his car. I said to the man I was treating, 'I think that was David Beckham'. Ten minutes later, he came back with a cup of coffee for me and a tea for the patient.
"It was awful cycling around in the cold today and I couldn't believe it when he came back with some hot drinks - I was so chuffed."

London Ambulance Service said Beckham had shown he "respects hard-working paramedics and even a gesture as small as buying a cup of coffee makes our crews feel appreciated".
The patient was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

As soon as the cameras are off he goes back to shouting abuse at passing cars & making rude hand gestures to old ladies.
