I was told by the owner of a shop specializing in scaly beasts and their care that one of his clients had a full-sized adult iguana that he had had since it's infancy. The iguana slept on the bed like a dog and ran to welcome its owner when he came into the house. The house had a picture window on a small rise overlooking a beach. One night a burglar broke in, the iguana came into the living room to say hello, and the burglar caught it in his flashlight and went right through the window. The owner came into the shop with photos and for advice on special treats for the iguana.

Teachers arrived at a west London school to find a fox napping on their staff room sofa.

I was listening to Radio 2 at teatime and the presenter Rylan Clark Neal told the story of how he was mugged by a fox. He was walking home through the countryside and saw a fox up ahead, they eyed each other for a few seconds and the fox advanced. Somehow Rylan managed to drop his wallet during this, the fox picked it up and ran away, never to be seen again. So he was mugged by a fox.

Elephant taking the piss?

A tourist was trampled to death by an elephant in a national park in Uganda after he got out of the car he was travelling in.

The deceased, a Saudi national, was passing through the Murchison Falls National Park to Arua city with colleagues when they stopped to relieve themselves.

A herd of elephants charged at them and the deceased, who had moved further away from the vehicle, was unable to return.

The incident happened on Tuesday night but was widely reported on Wednesday.

The park authorities confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing.

Three Bolivian boys (aged 8 - 12) harassed a black widow spider into biting each of them. They presumed this would give them superpowers like Spiderman. Instead, it gave them all a week in the hospital.
A Black Widow Delivered Some Harsh Truths To A Trio Of Aspiring Spider Men

Three boys in Bolivia learned the hard way that with great power comes fevers, tremors, and muscle pains as they tried to inherit the powers of Spider-Man by letting a black widow spider bite them. The boys aged 8, 10, and 12 fortunately didn’t succumb to the unfortunate incident and were released from hospital a week later, sadly sans superpowers.

According to a report from Ministry of Health officials, the three boys from Chayanta, Bolivia, were herding goats when eight-legged inspiration struck as they discovered a spider whose black and red markings reminded them of the superhero. Spurred on by the allure of spidey senses, the ability to climb walls, and shoot webs, they decided to try and make the spider bite them so they could be like the famed hero. Unaware of the creature’s potent venom, they decided to poke the spider with a stick in an attempt to goad it into biting them. The angry black widow took the bait and bit all three boys who were later found crying by their mother. ...

Crofters warn of 'explosion' in geese numbers

News story

Maybe we could send them to war against the wild boar and see who wins? After a scheme to keep geese numbers in check was cancelled, their numbers have shot up, and its been suggested they should be shot down because they're damaging the environment in the Western Isles. Unfortunately, the crofters own hardly any guns and have no shooting skills anyway.

Actually, they could tear up the countryside and plant windfarms, those things kill thousands of birds a year, why not geese?

The crofters could organise hunting holidays.

Conwy council refuses to butt in.

A pair of fighting goats blocked off the entrance to a supermarket car park.

A herd of Great Orme goats were seen at Asda in Llandudno, Conwy county, with one pair locking horns at the traffic lights.

Nurse Michelle Evans, who saw them, said: "They were having a right scrap and making a heck of a noise. It sounded like one was hurt."

Conwy council said it could not remove the goats as they were on private property.

Ms Evans added: "They were really going at it. The two goats fighting had their horns locked while the rest of the herd was just watching. People were beeping their horns because they couldn't get in or out of Asda. In the end, people just drove around them. You don't expect to see that when you go to pick up your shopping!"

Makes a change from cats in trees.

A woman who got stuck 18ft up a tree while trying to retrieve an escaped pet parrot has been rescued by firefighters in Wiltshire in the UK.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews used a 12-metre ladder to help her to safety on Saturday morning.

The fire service said: “We of course understand the emotional attachments to pets of any species, but please take this incident as a reminder of the danger posed by attempting to rescue without any specialist assistance.”

Crews from Trowbridge, Chippenham, Warminster and Devizes were sent to help the woman after they received a call from a member of the public.

“Once in attendance Trowbridge crew confirmed only one other fire engine was required so that a 12m ladder could be used to assist the member of the public to safety,” the service said.

Bull attacks cyclist during race in California

Video.

The bull reportedly attacked four cyclists during the Rock Cobbler gravel race, an extremely challenging off-road bike race. The daunting 80-mile race includes several major surface changes along the route, as well as an elevation gain of about 6,500 feet.

In the description of the event, it’s described as ‘a stupidly hard thrill ride bordering on a race. It was conceived by madmen.’There is also an abundance of wild animals along the daunting 80-mile trek.

A Louisiana squirrel "pounced on" a sheriff's deputy who was searching the car in which it was riding.
Louisiana deputy 'pounced on' by squirrel during traffic stop

Sheriff's deputies in Louisiana shared video of the moment a deputy was "pounced on" by a squirrel during a traffic stop.

The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that deputies were conducting a traffic stop involving an arrest ...

"Upon a vehicle search, a 'pet' feral squirrel -- which was inside -- pounced on the deputies," the post said.

The video shows the deputy flailing as the squirrel quickly climbs around his body.

The post said the squirrel was safely returned to its cage. The sheriff's office said the deputy and squirrel were both unharmed by the encounter.

And here was me thinking that cat rescuers were the left end of the bell curve.

(l was taught that, if approached by a woman reporting a cat stuck up a tree, a police officer should always reply, “Madam, have you ever seen a cat skeleton up a tree?”, then take off his helmet and mingle with the crowd…)

Seen a few Eagle Owls and they are big scary buggers. I wouldn't like to tangle with one.

Terrified jogger speaks out after owl attack - 'it tried to eat me'

I’ve never seen a bird as big as that in the wild, not in a zoo!”

A terrified jogger has told how she was attacked by a giant, escaped owl which swooped on her ponytail and 'tried to eat her.' Hattie Atkinson Smith, 27, said the huge bird of prey - which has a 6 ft (1.8m) wide wingspan - latched onto her ponytail during her daily workout on a riverside path.
The data scientist said she’d been out jogging at 6.10 am close to Norwich City's Carrow Road football stadium when she had felt a “hand” on the back of her head. But when she'd turned around, she noticed to her horror that a “massive bird” was attacking her head before she shook it off and then “sprinted” away to safety.

A suddenly and mysteriously aggressive petting zoo camel killed two men and attacked others - including law enforcement officers responding to the scene - in Tennessee.
Escaped petting zoo camel attacks and kills 2 men in Tennessee

A camel attacked and killed two men outside of Memphis, Tennessee, after escaping a petting zoo Thursday (March 10).

Past inspection reports suggested the petting zoo called Shirley Farms, located in Obion County, had little water for the dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) and no barrier to protect the public or attendant present at the time of an inspection. After receiving a call about a loose camel attacking people, Obion County sheriffs arrived at the zoo, which is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Memphis.

"Deputies arrived on scene to find two unconscious victims on the ground at Shirley Farms and a camel still on the loose" ...

The seemingly aggressive camel attacked one of the Obion sheriff's vehicles and then moved toward deputies who were trying to move a victim to EMS ... At this time, the officers had to "put the camel down for the safety of everyone on scene." The two male victims were pronounced dead at the scene. ...

As for why the escaped camel was so aggressive, that is unknown; however, in general, camels show little aggressive behavior except between males during mating season ...

I've mentioned on these pages that I had a camel as a pet when I was a teenager. He was a massive bull, of immense strength and we were always cautious around him. They tend to be angry beasts too, and I can understand the damage it caused. In fact, I'm surprised there aren't more 'death by camel' fatalities each year.

Edit: Searching further led me to this:

Camel-Related Deaths-A Forensic Overview

Which in turn (located within the above article) led me to something even more bizarre:

A Recreational Fishing Death Due to a Jumping Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson)

Especially since many places in the US still use "living Nativity scenes" and the camels not infrequently escape.

Zipped off at a sloth's pace.

When a boy started his zip-line ride on Sunday in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, the tour guide reminded him not to break. But the boy wisely ignored that tip when he suddenly saw a sloth hanging from the cable mid-zip, slowing down but still bumping into the creature. "It's a sloth!" he called out.

Fortunately, this sloth didn't want any trouble and immediately started making its way down the cable ahead of the boy. But, moving at a sloth's pace, it took about 15 minutes before the cable was clear and the boy could continue, according to Storyful. Neither the sloth nor the boy were injured.

One from my neck o' the woods: Turkeys have started attacking delivery drivers....

Residents in one Wauwatosa neighborhood say turkey attacks of delivery drivers have become an almost daily occurrence.

People in the Glenview Heights neighborhood say at night, the birds will often roost in a tree, but during the day, they're invading the backyards and streets, and for some reason, often launching aggressive attacks toward delivery drivers and their vehicles.

A Chestnut Hill woman was stunned to discover a wild turkey inside her house on Thursday. ...

“I’m like, ‘there’s a turkey on my windowsill, oh my God!” Spencer recalled.

She thinks the turkey may have come through a basement door that was open while she had some cleaning done. Spencer called Newton police for help and explained the problem to a dispatcher. ...

According to Spencer, police said they didn’t have an animal control unit available. She called her daughter to try and find a professional to remove the bird, but that would’ve cost hundreds of dollars.

“In the meantime it’s flying around, it’s leaving me presents all over the floor, all over my furniture,” Spencer said.

She said the turkey “seemed quite comfortable,” but she gave the bird an ultimatum and he walked out the door after about an hour.

“I let him know if he didn’t leave he was probably going to be dinner,” Spencer said. ...

An Arizona javelina rummaging for a snack took a car on a brief unpowered joyride.
Javelina in search of Cheetos takes station wagon on brief joyride

Deputies in Arizona said a javelina in search of Cheetos climbed into a vehicle and ended up taking ... a brief joyride.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that a deputy was called to a Cornville neighborhood on a report of a javelina ... trapped inside a Subaru station wagon.

The ... vehicle's rear hatch had been left open overnight, and the javelina had climbed in to raid a bag of Cheetos that was left inside the car.

The animal's antics inside the vehicle caused the rear hatch to close, trapping the javelina inside.

The javelina's attempts to escape the car led to it being shifted into neutral, rolling out of a driveway and crossing a road before coming to a stop ...

The deputy opened the vehicle's rear hatch, allowing the javelina to escape unscathed. The animal caused damage to the car's dashboard and the interior of the passenger side door.
