Animal ambulance Den Helder-Hollands Kroon asks people not to call about the seven-year-old cat Kees anymore. Because the animal loves to swim and roll in the mud, many people want to save Kees and employees regularly receive phone calls. That is not necessary, emphasizes the animal ambulance team.

"Kees always comes home neatly (or with a coat full of mud)," the organization writes on Facebook.

Seven-year-old Kees is from Anna Paulowna and is a Maine Coon with a long coat. In addition to swimming, the animal also likes to roll in the mud. As a result, he can look "quickly neglected" to the outside world, according to the animal ambulance. "Nothing could be further from the truth, Kees has a very sweet boss, who takes good care of him."

The animal ambulance team emphasizes that it is not necessary to get Kees out of the water, because he always knows how to find his way home and is microchipped. Also, it is not a good idea to feed the animal. Kees is on the medication and receives special feed. Giving other food can cause problems for his health.

People in the vicinity of Anna Paulowna who still call about a drowned cat can be asked for a photo of the animal. "If our colleagues recognize Kees, we can tell you with confidence that you can just let him walk."

Male macaque monkey killed.

A member of a gang of monkeys that has terrorised residents of a Japanese city for weeks has been caught and killed, officials say.

The macaques have injured almost 50 people in Yamaguchi.

The male primate was found in the grounds of a high school on Tuesday evening by specially commissioned hunters. It was tranquilised and later put down when it was identified as one of the animals responsible for the attacks.

Authorities have been hunting the monkeys since the attacks began on adults and children about three weeks ago. Most injuries have been mild scratches and bites. Incidents are still being reported and the search continues for other members of the gang, an official at the local agricultural department told AFP.

"Eyewitnesses describe monkeys of different sizes, and even after the capture, we've been getting reports of new attacks," he said.

The captured monkey was estimated to be four years old and was about half a metre tall (1ft 7in).

Japan: bathers warned of a biting dolphin

Swimmers in central Japan have been warned of a dolphin suspected of biting multiple people, with local authorities encouraging visitors to stay away from the marine mammal.

Officers at a beach in Fukui prefecture, where the dolphin has been spotted several times, set up an ultrasonic device on Wednesday to repel it, a local official said.

A sign calling on visitors not to touch the dolphin was also placed on the beach.

According to local media, at least ten incidents involving dolphin bites have been reported to agents at this beach, which has officially opened for the tourist season since July 9. ...

Monk seal attacks woman swimming too close in Hawaii:

Swimmer attacked by 'Rocky the seal' in Hawaii

A swimmer at a beach in Waikiki was injured this weekend after encountering an endangered Hawaiian monk seal with a young pup.
Hawaii Marine Animal Response, a nonprofit conservation organisation that helps monitor protected species, said their workers witnessed a swimmer come into contact with the mother monk seal known as Rocky on Sunday morning local time.
The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said in a statement that the victim is a 60-year-old primary school teacher from California. The woman received lacerations to her face, arm and back, the agency said.

Ants invaded a Brazilian woman's Kindle and managed to order two books from within the device. As it happens, ants apparently prefer science fiction and fantasy ...
Woman bemused after ants crawl inside her Kindle and start buying books

A woman who left her Kindle idle for two weeks was horrified to discover ants had crawled inside it and started buying books.

Mariana Vieira, 32 from Brasília, Brazil fetched her Amazon book reader from the shelf she left it on last Tuesday (July 26) to put it on charge ahead of a trip.

It charged up as usual but when the writer tapped it dozens of ants came out.

Speaking to TecMundo, she explained that she left the now-charged device on a window but started getting mysterious notifications on her phone. ...

"After a few minutes, I got a notification: 'Congratulations on your purchase'," she said. The ants had somehow managed to buy Isaac Asimov's sci-fi novel Robots and Empire.

Initially Mariana assumed it was a mistake. She rushed back to the Kindle to find it open on the shopping page with the touchscreen no longer working.

Then the ants managed to buy O Anel de Gyges, a fantasy book by Eduardo Giannetti.

Luckily she has since been able to cancel both purchases. ...

Bit of an 'i-ant,' ant-i-climax then! (Probably the culprits were of the Solenopsis invicta Buren specie?)

A plague of bats was resolved years ago in a Nevada fire station. Now they're back, and the station has been closed until they can be eradicated again.
Bats return to Nevada fire station, forcing it to close

Bats have infested a Nevada fire station for the second time in seven years, forcing officials to temporarily close it.

The bats have been flying around the living quarters of the small fire station between Reno and Carson City and dead bats have been found in a bay where an ambulance is parked ...

Officials in 2015 managed to get bats out of the fire station but their return has generated health and safety concerns ...

Bats can transmit rabies and other viruses to humans and their feces can transmit viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections ...

Firefighters and rescue workers based at the station dating to the 1950s will be relocated until the bats are gone.

skunk sprays church burglar and helps cops in the arrest

A burglar got a bit more than he bargained for after a skunk sprayed him while he was being arrested.

Grant Simonson, 28, was detained last Thursday morning after he was caught rifling through a church’s audio equipment in Washington state.
Deputies from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene just after 3am after a caller notified them that they could see someone with a mask and a flashlight in the church on its surveillance feed.

When sheriff’s deputies approached Simonson, they commanded him to put his hands up and lay face-down on the ground.

As Simonson complied with orders, a skunk ran onto the scene. The black-and-white mammal proceeded to spray Simonson unprompted.

‘A skunk came running around the corner, approached Simonson, and released its well-known and malodorous spray before fleeing the area,’ the sheriff’s office said.

Can you elaborate on the circumstance & how would you describe the smell?

I can only describe how a skunk's (spray's) smell smells to me. It's possible that it's sensed as "foul" in a different manner by different people who smell it.

The smell isn't "foul" in the same way that shit or something rotten seems "foul." It's more of an acrid aroma that irritates the nose rather than making one's stomach turn. For me it's like the acrid characteristic of burning rubber or plastic.

I've never been sprayed. I've been present when a skunk sprays and I've had occasion to encounter the aftermath of a spraying. Only a few weeks ago I stepped outside at night and caught the distinctive smell of a skunk's spraying in the air.

A dolphin has attacked and bitten at least 10 people at a Japanese beach.

FULL STORY: https://oicanadian.com/japan-bathers-warned-of-a-biting-dolphin/

The dolphin attacks continue, definitely on porpoise.

A dolphin has bitten two more swimmers on the arm, in what is believed to be the latest in a string of attacks on a Japanese beach.

According to local media, at least one man was taken to hospital on Thursday after encountering the sea mammal. Japanese officials believe the same dolphin is responsible for at least six related attacks so far this summer.

While dolphins are not usually aggressive to humans, hostility towards swimmers is not unheard of.

Local media reported that one man was bitten on both his arms on Thursday morning, which was followed by another attack the same afternoon on a second man - who suffered injuries to fingers on his left hand. The incidents both took place at Koshino Beach, a popular destination for swimmers and dolphins alike near the western Japanese city of Fukui. Officials have now installed ultrasonic transmitters along the beach in the hope that its high-frequency noises will deter dolphins from the area.

Swimmers have also been warned of the dangers posed by the wild creatures - and have been instructed to avoid any in the water.

We haven’t had a cow trampling for a while. The presence of dogs seems to be the common trigger for these attacks.

Sharon Eley was crossing a public field with her friend and their two dogs when she was surrounded by 20 cows in the Pendle countryside, Lancashire.

Led by an agitated ‘ringleader’, the cows tossed her to the ground twice before repeatedly headbutting her.
Sharon suffered a catalogue of other horror injuries, including 15 broken ribs, a punctured lung, a dislocated and shattered left ankle, a broken clavicle and severe bruising.

The five-minute onslaught only stopped when other walkers entered the field and distracted the cows.

A mountain rescue team rushed to the field after her friend phoned 999, and she was taken to hospital.

Sharon underwent two surgeries on her ankle and a month later was finally allowed home in June.

‘They pushed me over, I was on my hands and knees and I didn’t know how to get out.

‘They’d got all around me and all I could see was hooves after hooves after hooves.

‘I stood up and then they pushed me down again. I was on my hands and knees again and then they were headbutting me on my back.

‘I was wearing a hard leather backpack handbag and they were hitting it. The next minute they’d snapped the arm off my backpack, that had gone round my neck and it was choking me.

‘I’m very lucky to be alive.’

Beware of the roos.

Residents in the small coastal town of Maaroom, on Queensland's Fraser Coast, can no longer enjoy their afternoon walks.

Key points:

  • Several kangaroos have been removed from Maaroom following a spate of recent attacks
  • Residents fear they can no longer leave the house without a big stick
  • The Department of Environment and Science says there are no plans to cull the kangaroos

The quiet little town of around 220 permanent residents is under siege by a growing mob of kangaroos.

Perfectly manicured coastal lawns can at times be occupied by more than 15 kangaroos.

But it is not enough to deter keen fishers and grey nomads on their travels.

Caravan Park manager Karen Sutcliffe had to warn visitors to be cautious around the kangaroos.

"There are too many to count, really. They're constantly hopping around the park in between caravans," she said.
