Day Of The Animals: Tales Of Man Vs Beast (And Man Suffers)

Woman survives bear attack by playing dead

Renee Levow was attacked by an angry bear & was forced to play dead after having her jaw cracked.

She was out with the dogs in Frederick County, Maryland, US, when she encountered the 'angry’ juvenile black bear.

As it chased and swatted at one of her pets, she tried to employ the widespread advice she had heard to "make yourself big and be loud" but the bear instead turned its attention on her.

"He stood in front of me after he charged the hill and I could see literally every detail - his face, his teeth, his claws - everything.

"After a few seconds he swatted me down and then bit my left leg twice just above my knee and then he tossed me to the side and continued to bite me.

I guess it'll take the rest of her life to try to live with the 'mind scars' too!

As you make mention that Pigeons & Partridges are still about, I wonder if they might have a natural resistance to bird flu?
It is more likely that pigeons seem to outnumber all the other birds collectively. And the coveys of Partridge sit in the fields and don’t seem to socialise with other birds so may not come into contact with potentially infected birds.

Not even famous people are immune to animal attacks! From Florence Pugh...
https://www.indiewire.com/2022/11/florence-pugh-attacked-by-sheep-the-wonder-set-1234780985/

But it was Pugh’s animal co-stars that proved to be the most challenging of all.

“Whenever you’d work with the animals on the mountains, they were also like, ‘Why are we on a mountain? It’s really windy and cold,'” Pugh said. “And there was one take we were walking with a horse, and the horse just turned around sideways and was like, ‘Nope. Not walking anymore.’ And I had a sheep run into me, and I face-planted in mud. Like, full-on mud.”

Pugh continued, “I had a very simple scene where I had to walk across, just walk across the road like that, just walk but with really intense facial expressions going on. And as I was walking past this sheep, the sheep wouldn’t move out of the way. So I like, gently patted the bum and that sheep went ‘Rrr!’ And then another sheep next to it went like, ‘Rrr!’ and then that sheep ran into me. I flipped over the sheep and went straight down into cowpat. It was like full-on mud. It was great.”

Even better: Over 50 locals watched Pugh tumble.

Wild turkeys' thuggery in Woburn, Massachusetts, leaves local residents woebegone.
‘He kind of amps them up’: ‘Kevin’ the ringleader as turkeys terrorize Massachusetts town

It’s the time of year when millions of turkeys across the US might justifiably fear for their safety, but in one Massachusetts town the birds have turned the tables, ganging up to “terrorize” residents with pecks, kicks and loud clucking.

People in Woburn, north-west of Boston, have been subjected to a barrage of attacks and intimidation by a group of five wild turkeys, with the situation forcing some to take up improvised weapons and residents reporting being trapped in their homes.

The turkeys, led by a male bird nicknamed Kevin, arrived two years ago. Initially the birds were docile, but as time passed they have become ever more pugnacious, leaving Woburners fearful for their safety and forced to adapt their behavior.

“They don’t let you out of your house,” said Meaghan Tolson, who lives in Woburn and has named the turkeys.

“They peck at cars, they stop traffic. They go after kids on bikes. If you’re walking or jogging, or anything like that, they come for you.” ...

Man is stung to death while TALKING to a swarm of bees he believed were the reincarnation of his ancestors

A man has been stung to death after trying to talk to a swam of bees he believed were reincarnations of his ancestors in South Africa.

Nkosentsha Njimbana, 58, died at his Zalara home outside Qonce on November 5 after speaking to the bees during a traditional ceremony.

In some African cultures, it is believed that ancestors visit their living relatives in the form of bees or lizards, often to warn the family to perform the correct traditional rituals.

Bees had nested in Nkosentsha's property in Eastern Cape, which his brother said he took as a sign that his ancestors had come to visit him.

In some African cultures, it is believed that ancestors visit their living relatives in the form of bees, often to warn the family to perform traditional rituals

Traditional spokesperson Loyiso Nqevu, speaking to News24, said the incident reveals the wrath of the ancestors.

After consulting a sangoma, a traditional healer among the Zulu peoples, Nkosentsha returned to perform the 'ukugxotha iinyosi' ritual — known as the dispersing of the bees — to try and interpret their message.

Nqevu said failing to decode the ancestors' message may have caused the bees to turn on him.

He didn't really get swallowed. The headlines seemed to exaggerate. But he sure was lucky.

Do hippos eat people? I didn't think so.
Hippos have been know to sometimes eat meat, even stealing carcasses. Red deer and white tailed deer eat ground nesting birds and cows will consume bones. It's thought that these herbivores eat meat on occasion for the calcium content. The most notorious case was of the woman eating elephant of WWII. Bertha Walt was a secretary from Zurich who would visit an Asian elephant called Chang and feed him in her lunch hour. One time she was allowed to stay overnight with him and he ate her. This happened in 1945. Apparently because of the war the elephant was not being fed properly. He later killed his own keeper.

Not sure that they eat people, but they do kill about 500 people per year in Africa, making them far more dangerous than lions and sharks.

I wonder how many of those 500 people are trying to extract hippo teeth?

Deepening restrictions on ivory trafficking have led to an increase of the trade in hippopotamus teeth, wildlife campaigners are warning, with potentially serious effects for a species already listed as "vulnerable to extinction".

When the UK last June announced a near-total ban on the trade in elephant ivory, an animal welfare charity studied what happened in three widely used online marketplaces.

"We found the increase in hippo ivory trade in the UK within a month after the near total-ban of elephant ivory was introduced," says Frankie Osuch, lead author of a report released by Born Free in September. This was "deeply concerning evidence of increased demand for ivory from hippos, whose numbers in the wild are under threat" the report said.

Researchers say this pattern was clear as far back as 1989, when a worldwide ban on trade in ivory was first agreed, and has only intensified as governments have brought in new measures to tighten the ban.

Like ivory, hippo teeth and tusks are often used for decorative carvings, but they are cheaper and easier to obtain.

As an odd fact, we have more wild camels in Australia, than anywhere else on Earth. We actually export them back to the Middle East.

Not surprisingly, the fish does appear to be laughing in the 3rd image:

A US diver was left screaming in pain when a fish with “human teeth” chased and attacked him while he was diving in Egypt.
Shocking footage captured the moment the marine animal with protruding teeth took a bite out of the diver’s leg – leaving colleagues terrified, The Sun reports.

Alex Pikul, from Alabama, was diving in the Red Sea off the coast of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, when he encountered a triggerfish.

He was reportedly in a group of eight divers, led by the owner of boutique scuba diving company Mar Hosted Trips, Maira, when a strong current forced them to change their course.

Wild leopard goes on rampage in Indian town leaving 15 injured

At least 15 people were injured when a wild leopard went on a rampage in the Indian state of Assam.

The animals do not usually attack human beings unless provoked, but terrifying footage shared on social media on Tuesday showed the animal leaping over a barbed wire fence - much higher than the height of any human being - and launching itself at a moving van.

Those injured had been bitten by the animal but were all expected to make a full recovery.

Officials said the animal first attacked forest officials at the Rain Forest Research Institute on the outskirts of the city of Jorhat, before fleeing the campus and entering into neighbouring villages under the cover of dense tea garden vegetation.

“Some residents had a close shave as the leopard was roaming in their courtyards. Many of the injured were bitten and needed hospitalisation but they seem to be out of danger now,” said Ranjit Konwar, a divisional forest officer in Jorhat.

After a two-day search, the animal was successfully tranquilised on Thursday and will undergo a medical examination before it is released into Assam’s Kaziranga National Park.

Man killed and wife left paralysed after being trampled by cows on dog walk, inquest hears

This happened in Sept 2020.

Telecoms worker Michael Holmes, 57, died at the scene and his wife Teresa was airlifted to hospital after the attack on a public right of way in September 2020, an inquest heard.

The couple, both working from home, had walked across the nearby farmer’s field in Wakefield, West Yorkshire ‘scores of times’.

But this time CCTV showed the cows charge at them as they reached the end of the footpath while the whippets Neville and Luna – both on leads – ran off.

Michael’s heart was bruised and cut and he suffered 35 rib fractures.

Teresa who was knocked unconscious, woke in hospital a week later then spent six months recovering from back and rib injuries.

She told the court that she and Michael, her husband of 34 years, would regularly walk the route during their lunch breaks as they worked from home during lockdown.

The inquest heard their daughter Laura asked if they could care for her two whippets, Neville and Luna, as their regular dog walker wasn’t available.

They agreed to mind the dogs and took them for a walk through a nearby farmers field at around noon on September 29, a route Teresa says they took ‘scores of times’.

Teresa said because there were signs urging dog walkers to keep their animals on a lead, the couple thought it would be safe to take the dogs through the field.

But as they approached the end of the footpath – which is in the middle of the field – they were attacked by the cattle.

Sir Cameron Mackintosh has stepped up a deer cull on his Highlands estates after it emerged scared residents in a nearby town were "cornered" by stags.

The West End theatre impresario's 14,000-acre Nevis Estates has brought in a team of stalkers, with wildlife agency NatureScot ordering a cull to reduce deer numbers.

The development emerged after residents in Mallaig complained at the end of last year of being targeted by rampant stags.

There were around 300 deer on the estate and locals have estimated that up to 40 were regularly roaming around the town.

Minutes from Mallaig's community council's November meeting said: "We are now in the rutting season and several incidents have been reported over the past few weeks where certain stags have approached people in the village that were quite dangerous/scary.”
