Day Of The Animals: Tales Of Man Vs Beast (And Man Suffers)

That's the kind of decor that you can often find at cat cafes, of which there are a number throughout the world. There's one in Vienna which looks very similar to Mr Cohen's house!

A dog in the US is recovering after surgery to remove parts of a pair of calf-high leather boots the animal had eaten. The Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Centre in Philadelphia said the four-year-old mixed breed named Vince ate parts of both boots.

Vets said the volume consumed was so large that the dog’s stomach was unable to pass the material into the small intestines, so the pet underwent surgery. Specialists say surgery or endoscopy is often needed when dogs eat something they should not, since it can obstruct the digestive tract and perforate the intestines

More than half of all pet rabbits could be lonely, according to a new survey by the RSPCA and University of Bristol. The poll found that 60% of rabbits were housed without a companion, which could lead to suffering as they naturally live in groups. A large proportion of rabbits — 58% — were thought to be fearful of loud noises and 61% were reported as stressed when handled by their owner. ...

A dog abandoned at a railway station with a suitcase full of his belongings has been given a new home.

Kai attracted worldwide attention after he was dumped at Ayr station, South Ayrshire, Scotland, last month, prompting offers from dog lovers around the globe to take him in.

He was rescued by the Scottish SPCA, and the charity chose Ian Russell, 52, from a list of hundreds to give the shar pei-crossbeed a new start. Mr Russell, an hydraulic engineer from East Renfrewshire, recently lost his Dalmatian and said getting Kai was like a lotto win. ...

Dog's 'sixth sense saved' friends from Newquay landslide

About 100 tonnes of debris has fallen on to the road leading to the Great Western Beach in Newquay

Two friends who were a few feet away from a landslide say their pet dog's "sixth sense" saved their lives.
Amy Jones and Matt Smith were sitting above Great Western Beach in Newquay when their collie "sensed" danger and ran off, with the friends following.
Seconds later about 100 tonnes of debris fell from the cliff on to the access road.

No-one was injured, but the area has been sealed off and there is no access to the beach.
Ms Jones said: "She [Hazel the dog] was sniffing around the ground and then suddenly bolted off.
"Next there was a sound from the railings and they were wobbling, and then the ground collapsed and we ran and called the police."

Hazel 'sensed' danger seconds before the landslide, her own says

Mr Smith added: "If it wasn't for her we would have been left leaning against the railings.
"She definitely knew something was happening."

If counting sheep sends you to sleep, better not watch this video!
VIDEO: Ewe won't believe the number of sheep being herded through village near Helston

First published Friday 6 February 2015in News

Imagine driving around the corner and being confronted with 140 sheep. This was the unusual sight facing anyone travelling between St Martin and Newtown yesterday.
Although the occasional escaped sheep or two is nothing unusual in Cornwall, particularly in rural areas such as on the Lizard Peninsula, the volume of ewes was still something of an eye opener.
They were being moved between fields by farmers Steven and Diana Worden, from Polkerth Farm, who last month made headlines when one of their ewes gave birth to quintuplet lambs – beating estimated odds of one in 10,000.
Posting the video on Facebook, Diana said: “The day we became true sheep farmers, walking 140 ewes through the village!”

The ewes were chaperoned by two quadbikes behind, directing them along the quiet road.
There was lots of support from people, with one writing: “The way it was done, lovely to see.”
Another person said: “This is the best thing I have seen in a very long time!” :)

Sperm whale using Alaskan fishing boats as sushi bars

From the BBC
Sperm whales, the ocean’s largest predators, have been targeting the boats of black cod fishermen and swiping their catch off their lines.

This giant animal’s deft trick was filmed for the first time by a group of scientists based in Alaska, US, and is shown in the BBC Two programme Alaska: Earth’s Frozen Kingdom.

It shows a sperm whale using its long jaw to create tension on the line, which in turn snaps fish off the hooks. This feeding behaviour is called depredation and experts think it is learned by the whales.

Kent dog balances wine glass on head
7 February 2015 Last updated at 10:57 GMT

A dog that can balance on tin cans, hold a wine glass on his head and open the door for his owner is running out of tricks to learn, according to his Kent owner.
Sally Turner, from Wilmington near Dartford, said her border collie Brac understood over 100 words and commands when he was a puppy.
She told BBC reporter Juliette Parkin that her pet, now 11 years old, needed new ideas for more tricks.

Well, I guess the next logical thing for the dog to do is learn to paint and write its own autobiography.

That has got to be the scariest thing I've ever seen!

Aaaarrgghghhhhhhh I bloody hate scorpions!

(Fair play to the bull, shouldn't have fucked with it.)

EDIT - I should point out, I may hate scorpions but I probably wouldn't have killed it. Unless it killed me first.

Could we possibly use spoiler tags with the gnarly pictures? I've nowt against them but prefer to be in the right frame of mind when coming across them. Preferably not when I'm right in from work and munching fried halloumi.

Agreed, I just scrolled up to click New Posts and saw that bloody freaky pig.

Have to agree there. Bull baiting is a dangerous sport, easily avoided. I'm happier when matadors get gored though.

He'll end up as truncheon meat.

A horse, whose name Police in England wanted to change to make him sound more intimidating, has failed tests to join a mounted patrol.

Hundreds of people complained on social media when the Thames Valley force suggested calling Brian something like 'Thor' or 'Hercules' instead.

Anyway, it doesn't matter what his name is because poor Brian is being sent back to stables in Bedfordshire as he isn't up for the job at hand. ...

Aww. Someone should make a film about Brian and the story of his life.
