Day Of The Animals: Tales Of Man Vs Beast (And Man Suffers)

So this a long-standing cultural thing in Iran? If so, then who are the dog owners, foreigners? I say this because we have a considerable population from Nepal and India around here and they seem to be terrified of dogs. I mean petrified even of small ones. They just are not used to them and according to their own sentiments, will never acclimate to them. I do see the little kids rather curious after they get over the initial reaction.

The Islamic anti-dog thing seems to be cultural, more specific to Arab areas, parts of Pakistan and Iran have
long been areas where dogs are used for hunting. Jinnah, the "founder" of Pakistan loved dogs.

Oh, crap ... Yet another example of Cromer's being behind the times ...

Cromer's so behind the times that people still get punched in the face for sarcasm instead of applauded. I know I joke but I'm not making this up. A local 'out of town' shopkeeper got sarcastic with a local recently and he's now missing a front tooth. He can more than afford to get it fixed, I think he's somehow proud of it for some reason. If you're rude, you get punched in the face and the local police don't get too involved. And men and women generally still like each other. You should visit. Just don't cheek anyone.

Goat knocks out cow with a headbutt .. Goat - 1 Cow - 0

I believe this video was from 2015. There was no followup. With that and the general consensus that this was a fatal blow to the skull direct center, the cow died. So, a bit too morbid to laugh at for me.

I was anticipating a sardonic response Sharon so thanks for the clarification. I didn't know the cow had died.

Colorado mother fights off mountain lion that attacked five-year-old son
Boy playing outside home suffers injuries to face, head and neck
Lion killed as presumed to be ‘either injured or very ill’, authorities say
Associated Press in Denver
Saturday 18 June 2016 14.07 BST

Authorities say a mother fought off a mountain lion that attacked her five-year-old son in Colorado on Friday night.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office told ABC7 the boy had been playing outside with his older brother around 8pm when the mountain lion attacked, near their home about 10 miles north west of Aspen.

The mother heard screams from outside and “physically removed her son from the mountain lion”, according to a police statement.
The sheriff’s office said the boy’s mother ran outside when she heard screaming; the boy’s face, head and neck were injured. He was taken to an Aspen area hospital and county undersheriff Ron Ryan told the Aspen Times the boy was conscious and alert.
His mother sustained minor injuries to her hands and legs. An Aspen Valley Hospital spokesperson told NBC News she was “released in good condition”.

Sheriff’s deputies and forest service officers found the mountain lion under some trees by the family’s home, near toys and bicycles. The forest service officer killed the lion, the sheriff’s department said.
“Since it was still there, it was either injured or very ill, so they dispatched it,” Ryan said.

Mountain lions are not often seen in Colorado, and attacks are rare. The state parks and wildlife department says there have been “fewer than a dozen fatalities in North America in more than 100 years”.
If a lion approaches, people should stay calm, attempt to back away slowly and try to appear large. If a lion attacks, the department suggests fighting back with anything at hand, and doing everything to stand up.
“Throw stones, branches or whatever you can get your hands on without crouching down or turning your back,” officials recommend. “Wave your arms slowly and speak firmly. What you want to do is convince the lion you are not prey and that you may in fact be a danger to the lion.”

Parks officials will examine the Aspen lion to determine whether it was ill, and also look for a second lion reported in the area.

Another mountain lion is fought off and killed. Choked even, sounds as if Desperate Dan is back.

DENVER (AP) — A man who was attacked by a mountain lion while running on a northern Colorado trail fought back and killed the animal by choking it, wildlife officials said Tuesday.

The man was running alone at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space near Fort Collins on Monday when he heard something behind him on the trail and was attacked as he turned back to investigate, according to an account from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The agency said the young lion — its hunting instincts apparently triggered by the movement — lunged at the runner, biting his face and wrist, but the man was able to break free and kill the lion. The man was hospitalized with serious injuries and was expected to make a full recovery.

Good doggy!

Sadie let herself out. According to ABC7, the Westchester County, New York, pit bull somehow slipped out of her home, broke through her yard’s fence and ended up roaming around her neighborhood barking loudly. All the canine commotion led to a call to the local authorities about a loose dog. When the police showed up to where Sadie was standing, the dog took off.

“The dog then ran and took the officers through several streets, and then lead them back to the dog’s residence into the backyard,” Lt. Lawrence Rotta told ABC7. At Sadie’s home, the police found a broken fence, an open door and the smell of gas. Eastchester Fire Department and Con Edison were called to the house to investigate the odor and confirmed the smell was from a gas leak in the basement. Without early detection, the leak could’ve caused an explosion, authorities said.

Sadie’s owner believes the dog sensed her humans were in danger, because this is the only time that the pit bull has run away from home in her 11 years with the Costello family.

Where were the humans? I would have thought if they were awake they would have smelled it, and if not why didn't the dog alert them?

But, good doggy, she deserves a big dinner x

They were out (see story at link) but there might have been no home by the time they got back.

Sorry, it was the bit when they said she must have sensed her humans were in danger, sorry bout that

A mountain lion story with a happier ending.

A very large cat has been rescued from a tree near a property in California after the homeowner saw it while working in the garden, officials say.

US firefighters arrived at the property in San Bernardino after the mountain lion - or cougar - was spotted perched on a branch about 50ft (15m) high. The area was then secured and the animal was tranquilised and lowered to the ground using a harness. It was released back into the wild following an assessment by biologists.

"It is common for young mountain lions to wander outside what some would consider normal habitat in an attempt to establish their territory," said Kevin Brennan, a biologist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

One from July 2018 :

While out with their family on a sightseeing trip to Knaresborough Castle in North Yorkshire, UK, Lisa and Mark Brooks were surprised to come across a talking crow who asked several times “Y’alright love?” in a strong Yorkshire accent. The crow continued on, stating “I’m alright, I’m alright, I’m alright” over and again.

Note : The Pied Crow isn't native to the UK, so it's either very lost or was an escaped pet.

Luckily Kingston didn't end up as a hot dog in the fires.

A dog called Kingston has been reunited with his owners 101 days after he went missing during the deadliest wildfire in California's history.

The Ballejos family last saw Kingston, an Akita, during the devastating Camp Fire in November. Kingston, who is 12 years old, had jumped out of their truck as they fled their home in Paradise. A local animal rescue volunteer caught Kingston on Sunday, and the family believe he survived by hunting skunks. About 18,000 homes were destroyed and 86 people killed after the Camp Fire broke out and spread rapidly on 8 November north-east of San Francisco.

Does a bear fly in the woods?

Staff at a Russian airfield have turned to crowdfunding on the internet after a foundling bear became too much for them to handle.

Mansur the bear has lived at an airfield in Russia for the last three years, but as he moves into adulthood his hosts have decided to seek some help with his daily upkeep. Vintage plane restorers found the orphaned newborn cub wandering hungry and afraid about their private airfield in Tver Region northwest of Moscow, and cared for him the best they could, Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reports.

But as he grew bigger, his needs became too much for the amateur zookeepers, and a nature reserve advised them that Mansur was too accustomed to people to be able to adapt to living in the wild - he had even befriended the pet husky dog of one of the pilots. Then the staff of Oreshkovo aerodrome in nearby Kaluga Region came to the rescue, and offered to look after the bear in the more spacious grounds of their decommissioned air base.

Mansur now has his own enclosure, which is constantly maintained by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, and a fenced-off area of adjacent woodland to roam in at will.

A South Carolina woman was playing with her dogs, the play turned into a mauling, and the woman eventually died of cardiac arrest at the hospital ...
A woman was wrestling with her dogs when they started ‘eating her alive,’ neighbors say
Nancy Cherryl Burgess-Dismuke had been wrestling with her dogs outside a mobile home in South Carolina when neighbors noticed something was wrong — the animals had turned on their owner, authorities said.

Authorities said two of the dogs, both boxer-mixes, became “aggressive” with Burgess-Dismuke and started biting her arms while she was playing with them Thursday in Greenville, not far from the North Carolina border. Neighbors helped pull her away from the dogs and call paramedics, who applied tourniquets to her wounds and rushed her to a nearby hospital, authorities said.

Amber Greer, who called 911, told the Greenville News that, “It went from looking like they were really playing to them really eating her alive.”

Burgess-Dismuke, 52, died of her injuries, police said. ...

It is unclear why the dogs mauled their owner. ...

Senior Deputy Coroner Kent Dill told The Washington Post that the woman, who had sustained “severe bite wounds” on both arms, was “alert” and “talking” with paramedics, but she went into cardiac arrest at the hospital.

Authorities are investigating the death; the autopsy results, including the cause and manner of death, are still pending. ...

German police say dead cow kicked slaughterhouse worker
Police in southern Germany say a slaughterhouse worker suffered serious injuries after being kicked in the face by a dead cow.

In a statement, police said the cow was “killed according to regulations” early Thursday at an abattoir in Aalen, and hung from a meat hook for further processing.

Police said the carcass then kicked the man in the face, apparently due to a nerve impulse that experts say isn’t uncommon.

The 41-year-old worker was hospitalized.

An Australian python has arrived in Glasgow, shedding its skin in a canvas shoe. Typical DailMail online reporting - It mentions " the Scottish RSPCA" which doesn't exist and is presumeambly pandering to a readership which can't deal with differences; also uncertain about this Glasgow Zoo it says the snake is heading for.

Ruff justice but there was a bite in the tail of this tale.

A town in Germany has made headlines for seizing a family's dog over unpaid taxes - and then selling it on eBay.

German media report that officials in Ahlen initially wanted to seize the wheelchair of a disabled resident as the most valuable item on the premises. Instead, they settled on a pedigree pug bitch named Edda. One of the officials then listed the dog on eBay at an apparent bargain price of €750 - half of what its new owner expected to pay.

But the case – first reported in local newspaper Ahlener Tageblatt – was not yet over. Edda's new owner was Michaela Jordan, a police officer, who told the newspaper she was initially suspicious of the low price. Upon calling the number listed in the advert, she spoke to an employee of Ahlen's administration, who explained that the dog had been seized because the owner owed the city money - including for unpaid dog tax. The pug was healthy, she was told, and so Ms Jordan agreed to the sale.

Wool done doggy!

A lamb that had been missing from a farm for a week was found stuck in an old tree stump - by a police dog.

German shepherd Harry was out for a morning run with handler PC Dave Carter near Norwich on Friday. "PD Harry located a stuck lamb this morning on his leg stretch!! Missing for nearly a week, well done Harry," PC Carter wrote on Twitter. The baa-leaguered lamb was described as "safe and well" and has been returned to its mum and the farmer. It is not known if the lamb had spent the whole week stuck in the stump.

Apologies if already posted elsewhere but good story in D. Telegraph two day ago.
A stray dog befriended a Himalayan mountain expedition and followed them to the summit. The dog, a 45lb cross between a Tibetan mastiff and a Himalayan sheepdog bounded up to the climbers at 17,000 feet. She reached the summit of Baruntse in Nepal without any assistance and was still able to run around at 23,389 feet - a possible altitude record and got a lot of respect from the Sherpa. I think she got adopted by the Base camp manager.
