Here's a world map illustrating how much of the world's oceans remain unexplored (as far as surveying species is concerned).

2,700 scientists and 540 expeditions itemised marine life for the most-detailed insight into life under the waves. Taken from a 2010 study by the Centre for Marine Life, the pink areas indicate land, the light blue show explored ocean areas and the dark blue highlight areas where scientists know very little indeed about what actually lives there. These include vast swathes of the Indian, southern Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Upcoming missions should result in new discoveries.

‘Five Deeps’ mission to explore mysterious ocean trenches
By Erik Stokstad Dec. 19, 2018 , 1:20 PM

He scaled Mount Everest and the highest peaks on the six other continents. He skied to the North and South poles. Now, Victor Vescovo, the multimillionaire co-founder of a private equity company in Dallas, Texas, wants to be the first person to visit the deepest point in each of the five oceans. This week, Vescovo was set to complete the first dive in the yearlong Five Deeps Expedition, piloting a titanium-alloy, 12.5-ton submersible down 8408 meters to the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Puerto Rico Trench.

Five Deeps may look like a vanity project, but for scientists, it is a rare opportunity to study inaccessible, mysterious places. "If there wasn't this rich guy, there is not any funding agency that would be willing to spend so much money to visit all those areas," says Ann Vanreusel, a deep-sea biologist at Ghent University in Belgium. The expedition will yield high-resolution maps that could offer clues about how ocean trenches form when tectonic plates plunge into the mantle. The dives are also sure to spot new species, which will give researchers a chance to compare the ecosystems that have evolved in these isolated, exotic habitats. "Great insights could come when we can start comparing these ultradeep sites," says Stuart Piertney, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom.

We've all seen The Meg now and know this is a bad idea.

Rare angel sharks found living off Wales

Sightings from fishing boats suggest the mysterious angel shark is present in Welsh waters, although no-one knows exactly where. The shark's only established stronghold is the Canary Islands, where the animals have been filmed on the seabed. Wales could be a key habitat for the critically endangered shark, which is from an ancient and unique family. "If we lose the angel shark, we lose a really important lineage of evolutionary history that we can't get from any other shark species," Joanna Barker, of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), told BBC News.

That. Is. Freaky.

Chimera / Ghost Sharks live--and have lived for hundreds of thousands of years--at depths of up to 8,500ft.

They're also pretty interesting:

Those eyes...

You know, these creatures are probably rare, and man drags them up from the bottom of the ocean and kills them, A lot of the time, I hate man

Not only that, but they're being eaten too - fish are being eaten (and dying as a result of fishing) far faster than they can replenish their numbers. So please, stop eating fish.
