The idea of killing hairy wildmen by smoking them as they sleep in their caves is found also in the legends of the Nage people of Flores who killed the ebu gogo by suffocating them with smoke from burning palm fronds as they slept in their caves. On Sir Lanka a tribe of wildmen called nittaewo were supposedly smoked to death over three days by the Veddahs who blocked their cave entrance with brushwood and set light to it.
