This is a placeholder thread for the subject of the Dighton Rock in Massachusetts. I'm reasonably confident this rock has been mentioned on the forums years ago, but I cannot locate any proof for this.

This inscribed rock has been the subject of debate and diverse interpretations for centuries now.

This 1893 photo of the rock in its original location illustrates the sort of inscriptions various folks have attributed to it. The exact set of inscriptions attributed varies with authors and era.

I'm reading a great John Dee bio atm. He, at Liz 1's bequest, sent expeditions to seek out the NW passage in the late 16thC. I wonder if those inscriptions represent one of the divinations Dee developed in his astrological text known today as the Monas Heiroglyphica.

Part of the problem with associating possible sources with the Dighton Rock is that various researchers and writers have developed diverse graphical representations of what symbols are on the rock.

If you go to the Wikipedia article (2nd link above) and expand the photo of the rock in its museum exhibit, you'll see 4 different plaques illustrating alleged versions of the inscriptions. They don't match.

It is fun to speculate. Given the verified antiquity of the inscription, its specific authorship would have to be anything but mundane. very interesting mystery.
