Doctor Who [Spoilers]

Just looked it up on wiki and the Fugitive Doctor is pre the 1st.
Much as I love Doctor Who (all of it, to one degree or another) it never ceases to amaze me how seriously some people can take it. To me, it's an escapist romp. The occasional message is something it has always done (sometimes more subtly than others, sometimes more successful than others), but I just go along for the ride, for the jeopardy, the monsters, the silliness, the drama.... whatever. If it ever stops being fun, I will take the advice that Tegan's Aunt Vanessa gave her and 'give it up'. But even then I expect I will continue to enjoy its amazing heritage.

What I want to know is, is it now cannon that there are two Doctors. Gatwa and Tennant?

Are they going to spawn spin offs with their own regenerations?

Who knows? Lots of fans worry about canon. I don't. I kind of did once, but it is all just a great big ball of timey wimey stuff now!

They really do just need some decent writers on-board with a show-runner who's interested in proper storytelling rather than overly complicated grand arcs that never properly pay off (the Timeless Child guff still rankles with me).

Who having a "message" driven subtext isn't exactly new, but they need to have the subtext be part of well written stories with relatable characters, which seems to have been lost in recent years.
If Disney are still on board, they really should open the bank vault to Peter Jackson and/or J. Michael Straczynski, both of who have expressed an interest in Who but both of whom were turned away by dear old Auntie Beeb.

That said, in any complaints we've got about Nu-Nu-Who, do we not remember the horror that was Paradise Towers...?

Hehe. Definitely a low point! But I survived that, and many other things that have horrified me. K9 (who I love now, bless), Tom talking to the camera (how dare he!), Beryl Reid in charge of a space freighter, Kate O'Mara cosplaying as Bonnie Langford, the Myrka, Dr Malcolm Taylor, the Moon is an egg, River bloody Song.... I could go on. The day 'Doctor Who' forgets how to make me cringe is the day I put my sonic screwdriver collection on eBay.

The BBC are getting what's been coming to them since 2017. I hope the show gets a retcon one day and goes back to the brilliant programme it once was. I watched from the days of Jon Pwertwee up till 2017. I wouldn't be a cryptozoologist without Jon Pertwee and Tome Baker but since 2017 onwards it has just become a platform for ideologues who put forcing their own messages on us before SF, Horror and telling a good story. I hope Doctor Who can rise again some day.

I said I was willing to give Jodie a chance but in reality it died with Capaldi, who was magnificent but was given some rubbish scripts to work with.
Ironically, the latest title sequences show The Tardis flying through space and falling into a series of massive plot holes.

Nailing my colours to the mast, it’s undeniable that Jo Martin blew Jodie off the screen in the role - so obviously she had to go.

The problem is that I don’t think there will be screenwriters with the talent, experience, intelligence and regard for the heritage of the show to turn things around in the future.

I hate the BBC these days.

Shame the BBC doesn't follow your excellent example.

And at this precise point that branch of this discussion ends. Back to Dr Who
Except, at that point that branch didn't end, and the same bloody discussion just carried on further along, how 'woke' is destroying people's childhoods and legacies and yada yada.

So, on behalf of the admin team - that's us, the lovely people who actually run this place, for your free enjoyment - let me remind you of our position on this, on politics, on social politics, on identity politics.

WE DON'T CARE.

We are sick to bloody death of people shoehorning it into discussions. We have told you this repeatedly, nicely, reasonably, sternly, exasperatedly.. but nonetheless some people find the whole concept very, very hard to grasp. So one more time:

This is a fortean board. We discuss fortean topics, with occasional forays into the mainstream. We don't do politics of any description unless there's a clear and demonstrable fortean angle to it. Threads which keep sliding off-piste and into the snowdrift of politics will just be closed and people can see why for themselves. And this has now happened with this thread, which will remain shut until further notice.

We've got better things to do.

Ok, we're reopening this thread. Can I point you to the post immediately above this one, from Stu Neville.

Any more of this sort of posting and this thread will be closed again with no discussion and no warnings.

I know I'm the odd one out on this forum, but I'm thoroughly enjoying this series!

Especially Lux and The Well, I gave both 9/10.

But I'm notoriously uncritical, I enjoy the show and can't get upset about it, even at it's worst it's better than 90% of the tripe that gets made these days.

I've loved the latest episodes. Much better than last season, Space Babies was a definite low point. Good dynamic between our two leads, but we had that last season just some poorly written stories, not all!

We are the odd TWO out, @Fluttermoth. You've summed up how I feel about it. I just enjoy it for what it has always been to me, escapist fun. I think all 3 episodes so far this season have been good. I'm glad it's not just me.

I have to say Ncuti is doing fine, and I think Varada Sethu is knocking it out of the park.

I don't know if it's done on purpose but I like some of the 'nods' to old Who.

For example there was a bit in an episode (sorry, can't remember which*{and there's only been three!}) where the Dr is holding on to Belinda and they have some sort of trapped-in-a-void montage of panicked faces and running around. It's filmed with a black background and frequent image overlays. I think it's a simple (cheap?) device that I remember often in older episodes.

And talking of cheap, the extra money from The Mouse does lift the visuals a loooong way away from the usual quarries and sliver foil/ papier mache tunnels of the old days.

Still not keen on all the crying, however I came across a theory that it's linked to the Mrs Flood character :thought:

*pretty sure someone on here will be able to tell me without looking it up :D

I think that was towards the end of 'The Robot Revolution' when the bad guy (spoilers) was being 'deleted'. It struck me as quite a retro effect too, but that whole episode was pretty retro-tastic in its design, so I'm hoping it was a deliberate choice to do it that way.

I haven't seen any of the new series yet - not on Free-To-Air, and I'm waiting for the DVDs.

Still had a good old Welsh quarry in the last ep. Where would Dr Who be without quarries?

The cold open for 'Lux' felt quite old school to me. Though not WHO, more Sapphire and Steel*; It felt a lot like the sort of event they would have investigated.

I'm putting spoiler tags in here just in case anyone hasn't watched yet.

I'm liking Belinda as the new companion. She gives off more of a Donna vibe than any of the previous companions, which is a good thing. I'm still not convinced that there isn't something more going on with her though. In episode 1, she asked the Doctor
Is that your TARDIS
. As far as I can tell, the Doctor never told her about
the TARDIS
prior to that scene. The fans (read as haters) on reddit seem to want to think it is a mistake, or a scene was cut. I'm not so sure about that. We are talking about RTD here; He likes his misdirect and dropping innocuous sounding lines every now and again.

The throw-away line in 2023's Children In Need Special where 14 says something like "The timelines of canon are rupturing" provides a get out for Chibnall's retcon of the Doctor's origins. This is then added to in one of the 14th Doctor's specials where the Toymaker asks the Doctor something like "How to you like the changes I've made", implying that his meddling has altered canon. I reckon this is a way that RTD could un-retcon Chibnall's changes without having to be too heavy handed about it.

*Surely someone is interested in reviving Sapphire and Steel?

Hmmm. Interesting theory re: Belinda. We'll see....

It has made me think that after 62 years of the show, we have never had a "reverse Turlough" companion. He started off as a villain who was on a mission to kill the Doctor, but ended up as a good guy. Imagine if anyone could be brave enough to introduce a companion whose journey was the reverse. It does seem odd that it has never been tried. I think the nearest was the very short-lived Adam Mitchell, who wasn't really a bad guy, just a bit naive and misguided and not up to meeting the Doctor's high standards. No second chances for him.

Of course, back in Pertwee's time, we had UNIT captain Mike Yates (not really a companion) who ended up being recruited to the cause of the villains, but again he was more misguided than a bad guy, and he was allowed redemption a few stories later.

Going back the quarries being used for a moment. I visited Bluewater shopping centre today and wondered if that had been used. I was not disappointed.

‘The production visited Bluewater Quarry which was the setting for the planet Solos prior to the shopping centre being built. The quarry began in the early 19th century and was then rapidly enlarged for cement production in the 1950's; however it then closed down in the 1980's and is now Bluewater shopping centre.’

Interesting Doctor light episode. So ‘I’m the Governor’ is that her name? Is she a Time Lord?
Maybe she's the Guv'nor, as in the head honcho of the Pantheon? Interestingly, she seemed to be as vulnerable as everyone else to Sutekh's 'dust of death' in last season's 2-part finale, so maybe she isn't. Or maybe that was a bit of misdirection.
