I am old enough to remember the original Daleks and did indeed hide behind the sofa.
My ex husband watched it all through the 80s when I felt it had frankly gone downhill, but then, he'd never been a Trekkie!
I hear that the money tended to run out and savage cuts were made. I remember a lovely instance of this in the early 80s, may even have been before that, when Blake's 7 was also running.
A trailer for Dr Who had been shown several times. It was set on a sort of Star Trek-style ship's bridge but with lots of carpeted steps and sofas. There was an exciting explosion...
This trailer ran immediately before an episode of Blake's 7, and the main set was the same in both!!!
I pointed this out to both Whoeys and Blakeys of my acquaintance, but to my surprise nobody seemed at all peturbed or put out by it. Some muttered something about parallel universes though.
Ah, that could never happen on Star Trek! Those polystyrene boulders were well guarded!
