Dog-Headed Men (Cynocephali)

barking beens

There might just be something common to most people, but hidden away deep inside that for whatever reason, results in most cultures from the time of humanity to have a fascination with animal/men beings, especially dogs since dogs of some sort have been a part of the human experience probably as far back as when dog-like predators ate protohumans for lunch. Dogs are often cherished parts of the family and treated with the same love and affections that one would bestow upon a person, so of course it just seems natural that dogmen would be part of the human experience whether actually real or not. I know I myself was frightened to death of dog headed men as a child but I don't think I ever actually saw one.

Dog Headed Men

Can you expand on "ultra terrestials", I'm keen to hear anything anyone has to say on the matter. Do you guys accept that people see these creatures be they real or just an apparition. I think I'd really struggle with reality if I saw one of these things. Are there any tales of these men attacking anyone? Good God I'm losing sleep.

My flatmate once claimed that his brother, while on some kind of military practice in the middle of nowhere, late at night, came across a large bull. The bull turned as they passed by, and they saw that it had a human head. They all freaked out and didn't talk about it for a very long time.

It would be a very strange story to invent, but should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Great thread.

These dog headed guys feel familiar, kind of like the stag headed god (herne?) Some medievil legends give St. Christopher a dogs head.
All a bit Jung. Archetypal protector, escort etc?

Love to see one, especially wearing a suit.:wow:

I think the filming of that Daft Punk video may account for a few stories.

Monster Island, Massachusetts.....

A childhood friend of mine and myself ran into a dogheaded man once, out in the woods of Mashpee, Massachusetts, a little town on Cape Cod [I like to call it Monster Island, not for Fortean reasons, but for family ones!]

It was winter, and we had been up to no good in the nearby cranberry bogs and woods that separated our town from a military base [Camp Edwards/Otis AFB]. When twilight descended, we started back home, throwing rocks at ice formations, yelling, generally carrying on like the kids that we were, when we heard a distinct "Cough" sound behind us.

We both turned around to see a very large strange man-like creature crouched on a nearby dirt mound, watching us. He was a tall bugger, as even crouched he was taller than we were. [we were about ten and eleven years old.] He had what appeared to be the head of a German Shepard, and he was completely bare-assed! In the winter! [that's how we KNEW it was a male.]

Needless to say, we both screamed like six year old girls and ran as fast as our crazy little legs would take us!

Talking about it later, we both remarked how strange it's eyes were. The rest of the head seemed natural enough, we both saw the lips move the same way a dog's would, sneering like, but the eyes were very weird, very black. They had an almost bug like look to them, like they were multifaceted, or a better description, they looked like microphone covers, or some form of screening.
I know this makes it sound like a mask, and that was what we ended up convincing ourselves it was, a mask. Yet I still wonder...

[BTW, we did have a large number of freaks and weirdos in our neighborhood, as it was lower middle class housing project we lived in. We always assumed the DHM was a child molester, or something similar.]

May I ask those of you who have seen these dog-headed men, and may i say how bizarre this thread is (my husband asked me what i was reading and i told him dog-headed men and he quickly and lightly jogged out of the room! We aren't all nutters are we?), if when you SAW these creatures whether everything was normal around you? I mean did it suddenly go quiet before you saw them, or did you have a feeling of menace and then see them, or did they exude a feeling that you picked up on or was it purely you're own adrenaline, etc.???

I hope I never see one. How come you don't see cat-headed men?:D

Or do you?

Tales of the Golden Monkey

I hope this hasn't been mentioned before, but with regard to Anubis, the dog-headed Egyptian god:

a distinct memory from my childhood is watching 'Tales of the Golden Monkey' = a blatant Indiana Jones ripoff, in which a dashing pilot of a seaplane heroically solved archaeologically related mysteries. One of the stories - in fact, the only one anyone I've ever found who remembers the programme actually recalls - was one that included someone dressed as Anubis sneaking around in the middle of the night. It totally freaked us out as children and I'm sure gave me a few nightmares.

I just thought I'd mention this as it really made an impression on me and others who saw it at the time, and when it's discussed brings the same kind of fear to you as the evil childcatcher in 'chitty chitty bang bang'. Does anyone else remember this episode?

Never seen a cat headed man, sorry to say!

We were taken totally off guard by our "run in" with the dog headed man, but then again, there is always an air of menace on Cape Cod. We didn't hear many other critters in the woods, but then again, it was winter.
We never went back to look for tracks or anything strange, as we were but wee punks at the time. As a matter of fact, we avoided the area for some weeks afterwards.

I had an ex brother-in-law who used to drive down an interstate highway driving an antique fire engine and wearing a gorilla mask. Anything's possible.

Anubis

Not quite the topic, but close.

In a dream once, Anubis showed me around a museum of antiquities -- which was odd enough -- but when he escorted me to the exit, the glass door had writing, in gold, facing into the museum that indicated that the world that we know was open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.

The museum, it seems, was reality: the outside world was just a place to visit.

Dog-headed men? What could be their message or significance?

Dog-headed guys

It was obviously Anubis. Three of them in this case.

Not so subtle bump

Thank you for completely removing any possiblity of me falling asleep tonight.

I think that people, more than not noticing, are more likely to pretend they saw nothing, as they think that they're hallucinating, or fear rejection by "sane" aquaintances. I don't think that "no one would think enough of it to conclude they were anything out of the ordinary"...

When I was a teenager, I had a friend who would do virtually anything on a dare.

One evening, we were considering going to the mall when he announced that he had learned to ride a bicycle backwards...sitting on the handlebars facing backward. (Why he chose that time to proclaim this we shall never know.)

So I dared him, on the way to the mall, to put on my Ronald Reagan mask (it was the 80s) and ride his bike backwards down the centerline of a busy 4 lane road.

Of course, he was stupid enough to do this (which was why he was such an amusing friend) so I waited with baited breath as he began the prank. We expected people to stop, stare, point. We expected police officers to appear. We expected utter mayhem. (I expected to have to explain his ignominious death to his mother.)

He rode that way for 4 or 5 blocks. Nothing. Nobody looked. In fact, they made what appeared to be a great effort NOT to look.

After the first couple blocks, he upped the ante and raised his hands in two peace signs like Richard Nixon. Still nothing!

He finally returned to the sidewalk disappointed. We both felt utterly downtrodden that such a grandiose idiocy should come to nothing.

The Reagan mask was useful during lunch, however, for hitting on girls.

(This, BTW, was the same friend who alternated one week stints as a Satanist and then a Born-Again Christian. A couple other friends and I used to lurk outside his window during the Christian weeks while he was listening to 80s Christian Rock and whisper "Worship me. Kneel before your Lord Satan!" just loud enough for him to have to stop the record and listen intently while we stifled our laughter.)

Ah, nostalgia!

What a lovely story ^_^

I think Douglas Adams called this stoic determination not to look that strange phenomena seems to generate a SEP field - that is, Somebody Else's Problem. Alien spacecraft use it to land incognito in the middle of cricket pitches. :D Maybe dogheaded men are really all around us, but so few people are prepared to acknowledge the inexplicable that they rarely get reported.

This is a fascinating thread...

You'd think as First Prime of Apophis, Teal'c could catch a few minutes alone to do his business. But NO!

It's just another sad case of irresponsible Taurians waltzing through the Chaapa'ai to harass innocent Jaffa trying to answer the age-old Chulak riddle: Does a Shol'va s**t in the woods?

I can remember a few times when I was a kid when I would see something out-of-the-ordinary and got the distinct sense that the grown-ups in the room were deliberately "not seeing" it. Perhaps the SEP theory explains why young children are more open to seeing ghosts and imaginary friends and so on.

I have been reading up on the Cynocephali this week and the possible links to the werewolf.
The Cynocephali were a race of dog headed men whose origin seems to come from somewhere between India and Thailand. There were many reputable reports from early travellers of this race, commenting on their ability to use spears and bows in hunting and their barking language and fierceness.
Apparently St Christopher was a Cynocephali who abhored the savage ways of his people and prayed to God to be given the gift of human speech. Thereafter he was able to preach the word of God.
There are even beatific religious paintings portraying the dog headed saint in robes of the church.
I don't think the dog headed men were actually therianthropes but a race unto themselves.

Interesting if not useless

Woman headed dog?

In a sort of mirror the the slick Urban dogheaded men, Just got a book on local Lincolnshire hauntings, that has this in it, a... Rural woman headed dog

One of Lincolnshire’s strangest Black Dog legends comes from the village of Knaith. A rich elderly widow (aptly named Mrs Dog), lived alone in an isolated road-side cottage. One day a villainous traveller, no doubt spurred on by tales of her vast wealth robbed the cottage and murdered the old woman. From which time the inhabitants of Knaith shunned the area around the Cottage, for it was said the old woman’s ghost haunted the road in the guise of a huge black dog, but instead of snarling canine countenance the beast possesses the head of old Mrs Dog herself.

OK, am I going mad or was there a second dog-headed man report posted here about the critters stalking the meanstreets of Manchester, or did I dream it? And can anyone remember who the author was of the missing message?
I definitely recall reading a report in which two young siblings or friends say they were walking down the street on a sunny day and saw two adult males who are having a converstaion casually walking towards them . As they get closer, the two youngins realize one the adults has the head of a dog. They simultaneously start to run home in a panic to tell their mother what they saw. Predictably, the mother doesn't believe them. I'm sure I read that story on this thread. Unless, I too am going mad.

The 19thC French artist J.I.I.G. Grandville famously drew humans with animal heads.

He is credited with inspiring both Lear and Tenniel, and was possibly inspired himself by ancient Egyptian drawings of animal heads on human bodies.

Told you I'd find the book!;)

My friend has seen one of these. When she was about 13 (she's 32 now) she was in the lonuge at her parents' house with a boyfriend who was staying the night. Her parents had gone to bed. It was time for her to go upstairs to bed, leaving boyfriend to sleep in the lounge, they were saying goodnight and both passed in front of the lounge window. Through a gap in the curtains they both saw a tall man in a long black cloak with what she described to me as the head of a fox.

They were terrified and she couldn't bring herself to go upstairs for ages, because she would have to pass the window again. They discussed what they had seen and it seemed they had definitely seen the same thing. She never told her parents and to this day does not have a clue what it could have been.

Me being ever the sceptic told her it was probably a fox standing on the garden wall and that a trick of the light made the surrounding wall look like a cloak. Well, that's what I'd like to think it was anyway. The other option is far too scary!

Hi Stargazeypie

Although it was a long time ago, You give a (rough) location of where this would have been? (I mean in the country Not the front garden!):)

cheerz

Hi

Yes, their house is in Gatley, Cheadle in Stockport, Cheshire. They still live there now.

Newbie w/ a question..

Ok, forgive me for straying FAR from the intent of this thread, but I have a quick question for anyone who may be able to answer it. I really enjoy reading the "It Happened to Me" stories, and I have noticed that there haven't been any new ones since sometime in September, do they update it on a regular basis and are just late, or has there just not been any new stories for them to add? Thanks!

With so many sightings of each I was wondering how long it would take before I read of a 'cloaked being' and a 'dogheaded man' merged into one.
