Isn't it curious that there have been so many famous doubles of people throughout the years (at least through legend)?

http://paranormal.about.com/library/weekly/aa111102a.htm

Famous Doppelgangers

There have been many cases of doppelgangers appearing to well-known figures:

Guy de Maupassant, the French novelist and short story writer, claimed to have been haunted by his doppelganger near the end of his life. On one occasion, he said, this double entered his room, took a seat opposite him and began to dictate what de Maupassant was writing. He wrote about this experience in his short story "Lui."

John Donne, the 16th century English poet whose work often touched on the metaphysical, was visited by a doppelganger while he was in Paris - not his, but his wife's. She appeared to him holding a newborn baby. Donne's wife was pregnant at the time, but the apparition was a portent of great sadness. At the same moment that the doppelganger appeared, his wife had given birth to a stillborn child.

Percy Bysshe Shelley, still considered one of the greatest poets of the English language, encountered his doppelganger in Italy. The phantom silently pointed toward the Mediterranean Sea. Not long after, and shortly before his 30th birthday in 1822, Shelley died in a sailing accident - drowned in the Mediterranean Sea.

Queen Elizabeth I of England was shocked to see her doppelganger laid out on her bed. The queen died shortly thereafter.

In a case that suggests that doppelgangers might have something to do with time or dimensional shifts, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the 18th century German poet, confronted his doppelganger while riding on the road to Drusenheim. Riding toward him was his exact double, but wearing a gray suit trimmed in gold. Eight years later, von Goethe was again traveling on the same road, but in the opposite direction. He then realized he was wearing the very gray suit trimmed in gold that he had seen on his double eight years earlier! Had von Goethe seen his future self?

I wonder if the phenomenon of the doppelganger is among every culture of the world, or if it's purely a Western phenomenon?

Another great case that Tulip pointed out a while ago is that of Emilie Sagee:

http://www.mysteries.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/1,1.htm

When impossible demands are made of us we say ‘we can’t be in two places at once’ - but in 1845 a French teacher, Emilie Sagee, apparently was.

In 1853 the American writer Robert Dale Owen paused while in London to hear a story told by a young German woman that was to become a classic of its kind. It was the apparently well-documented story of a doppelganger, the exact double that is supposed, according to legend, to stalk us all, but stays just out of sight. The ‘double’ in this story - or ‘fetch’ as the Victorians chose to name it - stayed out of sight of its victim but nevertheless evoked widespread terror. This ‘fetch’ was that of a French schoolmistress. And it was seen not only by the young woman telling the story, but by over 40 of her companions at school. Dale Owen made a note of every detail of the story, and it was soon to find a place in the annals of late 19th century psychical research.

Julie von Guldenstubbe, the second daughter of the Baron von Guldenstubbe, was 13 in 1845 and attended a school for daughters of the nobility. This exclusive school, the Pensionat von Neuwelcke, was said to be 6 miles from the port of Riga and 3 ½ miles from Wolmar in Livonia (now part of Russia). Lessons were conducted in German, the language of the landowners and ruling classes. The principal, Herr Buch, a distinguished Moravian scholar, had appointed a French teacher, Mademoiselle Emilie Sagee, to the staff in 1845, and it was with her that Baroness Julie’s story was concerned.

The French teacher said that she was born in Dijon 32 years before she took up her post at Neuwelcke. She was fair skinned, with chestnut hair and blue eyes, and was fairly tall and slim. The pupils described her as having a sweet and lovable nature. The superintendents at her school were entirely satisfied with her work and were impressed by her gaiety, intelligence and education.

Everything promised well for Mlle Sagee’s career at Neuwelcke - but within a few weeks of her arrival she became the focus of rumour and gossip and the school. It seemed that Emilie could be - literally - in two places at once. If he was reported to be in a particular part of the school someone would contradict, saying, ‘Oh no, she can’t be there; I just passed her on the stairs’ or in some distant corridor. Individual pupils repeated this sort of confusion time and time again, but the teachers dismissed the girls’ stories as silly mistakes.

But naturally the most excitement was caused by the rumours that followed the first appearance of the ‘double’ to a number of witnesses. Mlle Sagee was giving a lesson to Julie von Guldenstubbe and 12 other girls. The subject of the lesson varied slightly with each storyteller: for example, one suggested Emilie was energetically demonstrating a mathematical theorem on the blackboard; Julie said the lesson was French grammar. What was agreed on was that Emilie Sagee was standing with her back to the class. Suddenly, a second ‘Emilie’ materialised at Mlle Sagee’s side. The two were exactly alike and went through the same movements, synchronising perfectly. The only difference was that the real Emilie had chalk in her hand but the fetch had none; it merely mimed the teachers actions as she wrote on the board. This story caused a great sensation at Neuwelcke, particularly as all 13 pupils in the class agreed precisely in their description of what they had seen.

In the following weeks the fetch was seen on a number of occasions. For instance it appeared at dinner, standing behind Mlle Sagee and imitating her movements as she ate. But, as in the classroom, the double’s hands were empty. On these occasions the schoolgirls were not alone in seeing Emilie’s fetch; the servants also reportedly saw the fetch behind the chair.

One of Julie’s school friends was badly frightened by the fetch. Fraulein Antonie von Wrangel was in a group invited to a local rural festivity and she was getting ready in her room. Emilie was helping her to fasten her dress. There was a mirror behind them and Antonie turned to catch a sight of two identical mademoiselles, each doing up her dress. Startled, she fainted clean away.

However, the fetch did not always mirror Emilie Sagee’s actions. Sometimes, Baroness Julie reported, it would behave quite independently. For example, the real Mlle Sagee would rise from her chair - but the double would remain seated. Antonie von Wrangel and a group of friends looked after Emilie when she was feverish with a cold. The girls took turns to read to her as she lay recovering in bed. Antonie was alone with her when she noticed the colour drain away from Mlle Sagee’s face. She was so pale she seemed about to faint, and Antonie asked if she was feeling worse.

Emilie replied with a weak and trembling voice that she was not, but her frightened look alarmed Antonie. A few moments later Antonie looked up to see the fetch walking about the room in excellent health. This time Antonie did not tell Emilie what she had seen, and when she came downstairs she immediately told the others what she had seen. On that time there was only one witness, but on the next occasion the incident was witnessed by the whole school.

This time all 42 pupils were gathered in the school hall to do their sewing and embroidery. Four french windows opened onto a corridor leading to the large garden in front of the house. The weather was fine and the girls had a clear view of the garden, where Mlle Sagee could be seen picking flowers.

The girls sat round a long table and the teacher sat at one end, supervising their work. After a little while she got up to leave them alone for some reason. Her chair did not remain empty for long however, as suddenly Mlle Sagee appeared in it. The girls turned their eyes to the garden and sure enough, there was Emilie. Although still gathering flowers, her movements were slow and languid as though - as the girls later remarked - she had suddenly been overcome with fatigue and tiredness. All the while her fetch sat silent and motionless.

Although afraid, the girls were getting used to the strange phenomena and two of the boldest among them decided to take a closer look at the fetch. They approached the chair, determined to touch the apparition. Stretching out their hands they encountered a slight resistance in the air surrounding it, such as a film of muslin or crepe-de-chine might offer.

One brave girl tried to pass between the chair and the table - and stepped right through the figure in the chair. Emilie’s double did not react, however, remaining seated until, a short time later, it slowly disappeared. As before the girls turned to the garden to watch Mlle Sagee again gathering flowers with her usual animation.

All 42 girls agreed on what they had witnessed and some questioned their teacher soon after. They asked how she had felt in the garden and if she had experienced anything special. Emilie answered that she had noticed the other teacher leaving the girls unattended. Emilie had had a clear view of the empty chair and recalled wishing the teacher had not left her pupils alone to waste their time and probably get up to mischief. She had wished, she added, that she could have been sitting there to keep an eye on the girls so they would get on with their work.

Over a year had passed since Emilie Sagee had arrived at Neuwelcke and the girls had had plenty of opportunities to see and talk about the fetch - or doppelganger as they must have called it. They noticed that there was an apparently vampiristic relationship or link between Emilie and her double. When the fetch appeared strong and clear Emilie seemed to suffer as a consequence, as though the wraith drew its power from the living woman. When she was busy and absorbed in a task she would be suddenly overcome with weakness and tiredness; at just such moments the double would be seen.

Emilie herself seems not to have seen her fetch while at Neuwelcke but she would be alerted to its presence by the reactions of the girls around her. She also came to realise that the return of her strength and energy signalled the moment that the double disappeared.

How did the school react to the phenomenon? All he pupils had seen the fetch at some time or other; so Emilie naturally caused quite a commotion at Neuwelcke. Although she was very popular among teachers and pupils, the more timid gradually became disturbed by her presence and told their parents. The school directors noted with concern that the attendance figures were dropping with the start of each new term.

Julie von Guldenstubbe told that the schools hopes for normality were in vain, and that after 18 months from when Emilie joined the staff, the roll call of 42 had dwindled to12.

I think the Sagee story has just the one source - memoirs of French scientist Flammarion IIRC - and has never been verified. It was the subject of a television film. Shades of Hanging Rock methinks!

Catherine Crowe has a lot on doubles in her Night-Side of Nature. I think we have some threads on here too. :)

There is something of an online revival at present regarding the Emilie Sagee case (if it ever was even that).

Double Vision: The Strange Case of Emilie Sagee
Emilie Sagee was haunted by a spectral twin, whose mirror-like movements terrified all those who saw it.

In some ways, I really hate the incubative / distributive/ validative nature of the internet. It permits / promotes non-facts at the same speed (or faster) than reality....

That would be Camille Flammarion's 1922 Death and its Mystery. I'm not sure when it was translated into English, but you can access it via Google Books.

In the passages regarding Sagee accessible via a Google search:

https://books.google.com/books?id=3...EINzAG#v=onepage&q="sagee" flammarion&f=false

... Flammarion attributes her story's original publication to a Robert Dale Owen (Footfalls on the Boundary of Another Life, 1849) and cites Owen's source as Baroness Julie de Güldenstubbé. Flammarion also mentions a couple of other - apparently later - sources.

A fascinating document....

<QUOTE> In 1845, there was in Livonia, fifty-eight kilometers from Riga and six kilometers from the little town of Volmar, a school for young girls of the nobility, called the Neuwelcke School. The head, at that time, was a certain Monsieur Buch.

The pupils, almost all of noble Livonian families, numbered forty-two; among them was the second daughter of Baron de Güldenstubbé, aged thirteen.

There was, among other instructors, a teacher of French, Mademoiselle Emilie Sagée, born in Dijon. She was of a Northern type, a blonde, with a very beautiful complexion, eyes of a clear blue, slender and a little above middle height; her nature was lovable, sweet, and gay. She was intelligent, and her education was perfect. Her health was good. The superintendents were entirely satisfied with her as a teacher. She was at that time thirty-two years old.

A few weeks after she came into the house, strange rumors about her began to spread among the pupils. When one of them said he had seen her in such and such a part of the building, another declared she had met her somewhere else at the same moment, saying, “Why, no, that can’t be true; I just passed her on the stairs,” etc. At first, such things were laid to mistakes, but as they did not cease, the young girls began to talk of them. The teachers declared that there was no sense in all this, and that not the least importance was to be attached to it.

But complications were not long in arising.

One day, when Emilie Sagée was giving a lesson to thirteen of these young girls, among them Mademoiselle de Güldenstubbé, and when, in order to make them understand better what she was showing them, she wrote upon the black board the passage to be explained, the pupils saw suddenly, to their great terror, two Dernoiselles Sagée, one beside the other. They were exactly alike and were going through the same movements. But the real person bad a piece of chalk in her hand and was really writing, while her phantasm had no chalk and was content to imitate the movements she made in writing.

This caused a great sensation in the establishment, all the more because all the young girls, without exception, had seen the second form and agreed perfectly in their description of the phenomenon. But the most remarkable incident was certainly the following:

One day, all the pupils, forty-two in number, were gathered in the same room, busy embroidering. It was a large room on the ground floor, with four large windows; the pupils were all seated before the table, and could see what was going on in the garden; as they were working, they saw Mademoiselle Sagée picking flowers, not far from the house. At the end of the table was another teacher, maintaining discipline, seated a morocco arm-chair. At a given moment this woman went away and the arm-chair was left empty. But this was only for a short time, for the young girls saw in it, suddenly, the form of Mademoiselle Sagée. At once, they looked into the garden, and saw her still busy picking flowers; only, her movements were languid and slower, like those of one overcome with sleep or exhausted by fatigue.

Again they looked toward the arm-chair, where the phantasm was seated, silent and motionless. More or less used to these strange manifestations, two of the boldest pupils approached the chair, and, touching the apparition, thought they encountered a resistance comparable to that which a light tissue of muslin or of crêpe might offer. One of them even dared to pass in front of the chair and, in fact, to step through part of the form. However, it still lasted a short time, then gradually vanished. They saw, too, that Mademoiselle Sagée had again begun to pick flowers with her usual animation. The forty-two pupils described the phenomenon in the same way.

It may be imagined that such a state of things could not exist without consequences to a girls’ school. The parents withdrew a large number of pupils, and at the end of eighteen months there remained only twelve out of forty-two. The head was obliged to dismiss Mademoiselle Sagée, in spite of her professional value and her excellent
conduct. Mademoiselle de Güldenstubbé heard her exclaim, despairingly, “Alas, this is the nineteenth time I have been obliged, since I was sixteen, to give up my position as a teacher!”

This odd example of duplication was published in 1849 by Robert Dale Owen, who had it at first hand from Baroness Julie de Güldenstubbé; by the review “Light “ (1883; page 336), with detailed information; by Aksakof, who vouches for its accuracy and by most writers on the psychic. I knew, in former days (in 1862), Baron Güldenstubbé and his sister. They were most sincere, perhaps a little mystical, but of unexceptionable integrity.

We saw above that Mademoiselle Sagée was a native of Dijon. Finding myself near Dijon (at the château of Quincey) in August, 1895, I took occasion to find out if a family by the name of Sagée had lived there and were there still. The result of an examination of the civic records of Dijon was not without its curious side.

This teacher was thirty-two years old in 1845. She was, therefore, born in 1813. The civic records of Dijon contain no family named Sagée; but they record the birth, on January 3, 1813, of a child named Octavie Saget — as a “natural daughter.” This name is so like that of the teacher that it is difficult to doubt the identity.

Would not her wandering life in Germany and in Russia be partially explained by her irregular birth? Could Mademoiselle de Güldenstubbé’s memory have confused the given name, — a mistake slight enough, moreover, — as well as the spelling of the name? That is possible, in view of the fact that all these statements were made in foreign languages. Could the teacher, alarmed by her eighteen changes of position, have herself made a slight change in her name?

Charles du Prel has spoken of this story of duplication in his work “La Mort et l’Au-delà” (1905) and spelled the name Emilie Saget. “Her astral body,” he writes, “was seen by an entire girls’ school during the whole course of her stay in that institution.”</QUOTE>

My own knowledge, such as it is, came via the part-work The Unexplained. It was illustrated with some rather fetching stills of a BBC television drama about the case.

I see it was a 30 minute semi-documentary in the series Leap in the Dark from the early seventies. Colin Wilson introduced it. :)

It seems like an incredibly-detailed alleged incident, but, I remain concerned that it feels too detailed. I know, this is a perfect example of a Fortean phenomenon that I'm suspicious of, precisely because of the amount of insightful information (how can anything supernatural 'win', on this basis?)

The reference to a Charles du Prel's writings of “La Mort et l’Au-delà” with an alternative name Emilie Saget is interesting (I've found a possible French language text of that title online, but it has a curiously-ecclesiatical and inaccessible style).

The story is vaguely-familiar, I may also have seen it in "The Unexplained", or potentially in "The Tree of Knowledge" 1970s part-works encyclopedia (which had an oddly-healthy supernatural section)

Another point that bothers me is that the claim it had happened 18 times before comes from a single source alleged to have overheard it - one of the schoolgirls whom Sagée / Saget taught. In the conceivable case the schoolgirls were conspiring to force Emilie out this would have been a perfect gloss to add so as to ensure the headmistress had no option other than letting her go.

A contemporary collaborative movement exists for the identification (and potential enpatriation) of world-wide 'twin strangers' (a suspected American term that compliments the concept that everyone has at least a few doppelgangers)
https://twinstrangers.com

There are associated genographic services offered via the twinification social online facility, which (based upon a possibly entirely-unrepresentative publicity example) the official this-case conclusion being that they are not pseudosiblings nor any real blood relation within the last 10,000 years hints at the 'systematised' nature of such biological investigationing to be savagely-candid in its pronouncements

I just watched a clip from a news show called Inside Edition. It was about two guys who look like they could be twins and are both professional baseball players. Both of them are pitchers and 6"4' tall. To make it odder, they are both called Brady Feigl.
The show had them do DNA tests, but sadly did one of those "How many percent italian/nigerian are you" tests. A straight-up DNA comparison would have been better. So I feel the results are inconclusive.

Emilie Sagée gets a mention in Stephen King's book The Outsider, for obvious reasons if you know the premise.

Oh, and "Rachel Withers" aboard The Lusitania from the same book appears to be an invention of the author.

A friend just told me I have a doppelganger. Well, actually I think it's more a case of mistaken identity.

He told me that he'd waved to me as I drove down a street in our nearest town. I've not been down there for some months and, on the day in question, was actually several miles in the opposite direction, walking the dog on the moors. But he swore it was me, behind the wheel of my Octavia.

His eyesight is pretty good, but I think he saw a car that looked like mine, and retro-fitted the driver (who only needed to be someone older with very short hair) to be me.

He's convinced. I know he's just being daft.

It can be very unnerving when someones swears that they saw you. It happened to me numerous times at one point. One Monday morning a work colleague said that he had seen me in Morrisons on Saturday. I told him that I had not been there for a few weeks, but he insisted. He got almost angry when I kept telling him it couldn't have possibly been me.

My person got mildly annoyed too, and kept insisting it was me. I finally pointed out that I had absolutely no need to be where he thought I was, why would I? He couldn't even use the 'driving to the shop' excuse, since I work in a shop and do all my shopping there!

My doppelgänger makes people angry too. They've waved at 'me' or greeted 'me' with no response and instead of shrugging and thinking 'How rude!' they kick off with me or others. There was once a family row about it and that incident was still being brought up until a few years ago.

It's as if the 'me' they see is more 'me' than the the real me, if that makes sense.
Denying it's really me is like calling them liars for no good reason. They are furious.

I've described all this elsewhere.

Yes, good point. This guy actually said to me ''you were bloody there, I saw you!''
I always worry that the dopplegänger is an even bigger arse than I am. If he is suave and sophisticated I wouldn't mind as much really.

When I was in high school, I worked at my grandfather's gas station after school and on Saturdays. One day this big Chevy Blazer pulled in, driven by one of the local high school teachers. Mr H was an actual nuclear physicist who quit his job working for the military, and decided to do something more constructive by moving to the middle of nowhere to teach science. He was a great guy and a lot of fun. He lived half an hour away, and I never knew of him buying gas there. This was long before I had even heard of self-service gas pumps.

I walked out to greet Mr H, but he didn't seem to know me. He was a dead ringer for the guy, down to the neatly trimmed, bristly mustache. He told me to fill the tank with regular, and even though I was pretty confused, I went about the task. When I went to collect payment, he asked how many gallons it took. I told him, and he pulled out a slide rule. He then calculated the mileage (those things were notorious gas hogs) and he made a raspberry to express his disapproval. The slide rule and the raspberry were all very characteristic of my favorite teacher. He paid me, thanked me, and left.

Mr H was a fun loving guy with a very dry sense of humor, and harmless pranks were not unusual in his classroom, but he would not have pretended not to know me. He drove a Chevy Vega. His doppelganger's voice was a bit different, and there were other clues that he was not Mr H, but the whole encounter was bizarre.

I think people get so angry when you try to explain it wasn't you because, basically, they are in the wrong. They probably didn't really take the doppelganger's full appearance on board and based it on general 'outline' (same hair colour and cut, same height and weight, general superficial resemblance). Your assertation that you weren't there reinforces that they don't know you as well as they THINK they do, and they then feel a bit of a burk. Getting angry is many many many people's reactions to being a burk.

It's happened many times. People have even told me they've been face to face with 'me' and I've looked straight through them.
This includes my own mother, who said she realised it was 'you but not you'.

Not once has anyone accepted they've made a mistake. They are instantly furious.

The man who was arrested this week in a restaurant in The Hague for allegedly being a notorious Italian mafia boss is innocent. The Public Prosecutor's Office has disclosed that the man has become the victim of a mistaken identity, as his lawyer had already argued.

The man was plucked from the restaurant by officers with their weapons drawn blindfolded on Wednesday afternoon, the restaurant owner told Het Parool yesterday. It would have been about 59-year-old Matteo Messina Denaro, who is seen as the boss of the mafia in Sicily.

It is unclear what went wrong. A spokesman for the OM says the man was arrested at the request of Italian authorities.

They both look a touch Jewish/Polish. But just a touch.
"Feigl" is a Jewish surname and woman's first name.

Me and a friend went fishing yesterday, the fishing was poor so we did a lot of talking. He reminded of an incident in work (we are postmen) about six years ago.
He was in work at his frame where he preps his delivery. He turned around and saw me signing in,he would be about thirty feet from me. I am very distinctive as I’m the only person in work who doesn’t wear the jacket we are issued with as it’s poor quality and not waterproof. Those jackets are either red or orange. I wear a navy blue Rab jacket with the brand name clearly visible on the jacket.
He told me he said hello to me but I didn’t react. He thought that was unusual. He saw me start walking across the office towards my prep frame. He could only see me for a few seconds before I disappear behind some prep frames in the middle of the office. He looked down the office to his right but didn’t see me arrive at my prep frame.
Then he looked over torwards the entrance because he heard the flappy rubber doors open and I walked in and signed in . I remember him walking torwards me and saying “I’ve just seen you sign in and walk across the office”. I said “no,I’ve just come in”. He is utterly convinced it was me,Rab jacket with the brand name on the arm, plus we can’t think of anyone who he could have mistaken me for.
The whole incident would have lasted about fifteen seconds. I drew a layout of the office but file too big.

Over the years, many people have told me that they waved to me at such and such a place, but as I would tell them, I wasn't there.
And I've been told over and over, 'you're the spitting image of so and so', but who knows, I figured I have a plain face.
The only thing is, this avatar of mine - when I spotted this photo on the internet, I looked into the eyes of a stranger, yet it's like looking into my own eyes, and they're even hazel like my own. She has my fat cheeks, hair, same puffy lips and smile, same chin and face shape and same bridge of the nose along with quite similar nose. The only thing different are the eyebrows. A weird feeling.
When I showed Mr. R the photo without saying anything, he said, 'You never told me you went to Woodstock', which quite stunned me.
And he still insists it's me. LOL!
