Earthquake-Related Oddities & Weirdness

I don't understand why people would travel to a place yet be so ignorant (or worse) about the local beliefs and customs of the place they are visiting. That said, agreeing that they are indeed responsible for the earthquake might be carrying 'respect for local beliefs' a bit too far...

A group of western tourists who stripped naked at the peak of Mount Kinabalu last month will be prohibited from leaving Malaysia, as their act of "disrespecting the mountain" could have caused the devastating earthquake that killed at least 13 people.

The earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Sabah's west coast on Friday, causing landslides on Mount Kinabalu, where at least thirteen climbers have so far been confirmed dead.

The earthquake comes a week after a group of foreigners, which included two Canadians, two Dutch and a German national, broke away from their entourage and stripped naked before taking photos at the mountain peak. Sabahans railed against the images, as they consider the mountain sacred and the act of tourists made “mountain spirits mad”.

Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah , Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said that the tourists showed disrespect to the sacred mountain and will face appropriate action according to native laws.

However twerking can not be ruled out as a cause of earthquakes.

At least they actually got an earthquake, which from the locals' angle validates their beliefs. Had they stripped off and peed on Canterbury Cathedral, there'd be much wailing and Police involvement, but I doubt tectonics would come into play.

If they're that determined to challenge local beliefs, why don't they do Mecca next year, and flash, wee and curse the Kaaba? No?

A New Zealand preacher is facing a backlash after saying that earthquakes could be caused by homosexuality.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck South Island last week, killing two people.

Brian Tamaki, leader of the Destiny Church, posted a sermon on Facebook claiming such disasters were caused by sin, and referencing gay marriage.

An online petition calling for the church to be classed as a hate group and lose its tax-free status has been signed by 100,000 people.

The sermon was given at Mr Tamaki's church in Auckland on Sunday, before the quake. But it was later posted on Facebook and labelled as a "prediction" by the preacher. ...

Only if they were all having sex at once and at the same frequency. :p

Oh wait that's stupid, of course that's not the cause.

Video shows ‘desert tsunami’ in Death Valley triggered by earthquake 1,500 miles away

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake 1,500 miles away triggered a “desert tsunami” in Death Valley National Park, rangers said. The earthquake struck Mexico near the Colima-Michoacan border on Monday, Sept. 19, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Less than a half-hour later, Death Valley started shaking. “Twenty-two minutes later, water started sloshing 1,500 miles away in Devils Hole,” park rangers said in a Sept. 21 news release. “The waves reached 4 feet high around 11:35 a.m.”

Devils Hole is a limestone cave in Nevada’s portion of the national park that’s partially filled with water. It’s hundreds of feet deep.

Park officials said the earthquake caused a “seiche,” which is a wave that swings around a standing body of water. It stirred up sediment and rocks from the shallow part of the cave and removed algae growth.
