I don't know any Forteans, which is why I come here -
no one seems to talk about UFOs, or ghosts, or strange experiences.
Luckily youtube is always available, and this site!
Get a bit of publicity going and hopefully people will turn up. When I started EdFort 23 years ago at first it was just me and a few friends, but a few posters and perseverance and here we are...

‘Some Ghost Stories Which Trouble Me’

By Alan Murdie, chairman of the Ghost Club

There is no doubt that people see ghosts and apparitions, but the question is what are people
actually experiencing?
Broadly speaking, parapsychological theories concerning ghosts and hauntings have fallen into
two classes – those viewing ghosts as enduring mental images generated by once living people
detectable by sensitive individuals and those which consider them as evidence of a spirit or the
survival of some aspect of a once-living personality.
A case can be made for both viewpoints; again parapsychologists and psychical researchers
tend to favour the idea that ghosts and apparitions are just images, whereas popular ghost
hunters and amateur groups tend to embrace the idea of unquiet spirits.
In this talk Alan Murdie looks at some cases that are hard to classify under either hypothesis,
giving rise to: ‘Some ghost stories that trouble me!’.

Alan Murdie, LL.B, Barrister is active in psychical research in the UK and abroad. He has conducted research into ghosts and hauntings in UK, Romania and Colombia .

He has written and broadcast extensively on paranormal topics for local, national, and international
media. He is a council member of the Society for Psychical Research, the author of Haunted Edinburgh and writes the monthly column ‘Ghostwatch’ for Fortean Times covering ghosts, poltergeists and survival after death. He is a chairman of the UK’s Ghost Club originally founded in 1862.

James Kerr will be talking on

(Ghost) trains and boats and planes - from the Flying Dutchman to phantom truckers, Mexico's red cars and Russia's black volgas, there is no shortage of intagible inanimate objects haunting the traffic network worldwide. But what are these apparitions? Are they ghosts at all?

The next meeting of the Edinburgh Fortean Society is Wednesday the 9th of November at 7.30, upstairs in the Beehive pub, Grassmarket. £1 entry.

The first meeting of the Edinburgh Fortean Society Film Club!

During lockdown we had book recommendations so moving on from there we are going to have Fortean film recommendations!
Those who have volunteered will give us the reasons why they love a particular film so much then we will watch the trailer.
If anyone on the night feels moved to add extra recommendations then the more the merrier and if anyone woudl like to recommend a film but they can't be there get in touch and we'll see if we can record an intro from you, so you can be there, in spirit at least!

Whatever next, a Forten TV night? Hmmm...
