There have apparently been found these skulls in South America and possibly a few other places, that look rather elongated. It is said to be due to head binding, but some say they have a brain cavity larger than normal. Anyone know any good and serious sites regarding those, preferably with x-rays and/or MRI scans?

The majority of websites seem to be ones suggesting they are hybrids etc but I can't see why this has to be the case.

Tutankhamun had an elongated skull but not to the extent of theses guys, and if Akhenatens likenesses are correct he had an interesting skull.

Some nice pics link from wayback machine

Can't find any cranial volumes for you - if I dig some up I'll get back to you

I'm sure there must be sites around but the best info is in the scientific journals as it is of great interest to physical anthropologists (see for example the American Journal of Physical Anthropology). I'm pretty sure I can dig out a couple of refernces.

There is no great change in cranial capacity the bindings just tend to push the skull into a different shape.

There are some elongated skulls here in the Anthropology and History Museum of Mexico City. The explanation is that a chemical reaction somehow deformed the skulls, increasing the volume while at the same time reducing the thickness of the bone wall.

Also, in Egypt, lovely queen Nefertiti had an extremely deformed head, hence her very special hats, that would cover her deformity. IIRC, she had an elongated skull, also in a strange shape.

Maybe a congenital deformity due to the fact that the Egyptian royal families where pretty much into inbreeding? Anyway, her face is lovely.

That's the thing, the websites I found all seemed to be a bit too out there. I wanted to know especially if there is a difference in cranial capacity. I mentioned this at a genetics lecture, as it could possibly be due to a reverse process of what causes microcephalics(pinheads) to be born. I know they say it is due to cranial binding, but apparently the same has been said about microcephalics despite it being a genetic condition.

.

It's dangerous to read too much into the statuary of the Akhenaten rule, both the king and his Queen Nefertiti appear severely deformed and the deformaties have been used as the basis for a number of the 'conspiracy theories' around the death of their son Tutankaten (Tutankamun), but the statuary is so outre as to suggest that Akehnaten was portraying a new artistic style to break from the 'traditional' look to physically represent his break from the old gods and replacement with the Aten disk. An artistic heresy to match the religious one if you will.

Trouble is, no mummy of Akhenaten has ever been found, nor of his queen, so any theories are unfortunately just that.

Agreeing totally with everything above we do have Tutankhamun's skull and it was elongated

kull Shape. Tutankhamun had a very elongated (dolichocephalic) skull. The cranial sutures are not prematurely fused, so this is most likely due to normal anthropological variation rather than any pathology

Fair point and the features of Nefertiti from the stature do have the leptoprosopic look (long narrow features) of the dolichocephalic skull (as does those of Akenaten), but I would suggest that the extremity of the dolichocephalicy were more likely an artistic exageration rather than an actual condition as the skull of Tutankamun seems to bear out.

Perhaps (sound of me going out on a limb) the dolichocephalicy was seen as a regal or even theistic anthropological trait and was thusly exagerated to reinforce the otherness of the Pharoh?

Following the slightly OT bent of the last couple of posts, found this on Wiki about Tutankamun -

He also had a pronounced dolichocephalic (elongated) skull, though it was within normal bounds and highly unlikely to have been pathologic in cause. Given the fact that many of the royal depictions of Akhenaten (possibly his father, certainly a relation), often featured an elongated head, it is likely an exaggeration of a family trait, rather than a distinct abnormality more typical of a condition like Marfan's syndrome, as had been suggested.

Russian archeologists in the Siberian city of Omsk seek answers to explain unusual elongated human skulls found in nearby forest.
Russian archeologists in the southwestern Siberian city of Omsk are embarking on a study of human remains that they deem too strange to be publicly displayed in the city museum.

The archeological team have begun studying bizarre, elongated human skulls found in a nearby forest almost ten years ago.
From the front the skulls look like that of a normal human, but when turned to the side it's clear that this is not the case. The skulls are grossly elongated.

Scholars at the Omsk Museum of History and Culture have no conclusive answer as to the origins of these skulls, which were found in burial mounds that are believed to date from the 4th century A.D. Because of the skulls' bizarre shape they do not show them to the public, fearing that people might be too shocked.

''This really shocked and even frightened people. Because the skull's shape was unusual for a human,'' said Igor Skandakov, director of the Omsk Museum of History and Culture.

Scientists said that the skulls have marks that could be due to artificial deformation of a normal skull. They surmise that the ancient communities deliberately deformed the skulls of their children, by applying force through a head press, almost from the moment of birth. Why they might have done this is not clear. Over the years, there have been people inclined to believe that the strange skulls belonged to aliens who visited our planet centuries ago.

''There are myths about gods who descended from the heavens and who had elongated heads. They were very special special and were revered,'' said Skandakov.

But most scientists do not accept this idea, and are certain that such deformation was carried out either as a status symbol of belonging to the elite of society, or perhaps as a way to enhance the functioning of one's brain.

''It's unlikely that the ancients knew much about neuro-surgery. But it's possible that somehow they were able to develop exceptional brain capabilities,'' said archeologist Alexei Matveyev.

''These people were some form of living instrument who were able, for instance, to determine whether or not there was danger, as well as to predict the weather,'' said Kirill Makarov, director of the Agency for Social and Informational Technology.

Dozens of such elongated skulls have been found in many other places of the world, primarily in South and Central America in graves of the ancient indigenous civilisations. However, they've also been found in graves in France, Norway and Russia's North Caucasus region. In nearly all these cases, the remains are at least 1,500 years old.

This wide geographic stretch gives rise to yet another question: if such deformation was a fashion statement or an attempt to enhance brain capabilities, how is it possible that it was practised in many different regions of the world that had no contact with each other? The Omsk museum hopes to answer these questions when it launches another archeological expedition this summer deep in the forests to the north of Omsk. This expedition will repeat efforts made in August 2008 during a similar dig.

At that time, local archeologists teamed up with student volunteers from Germany. But there were no conclusive results.

I'd say more an Earth Mystery meself. :)

But it's interesting, I wonder what benefit, if any, was sought from such head binding?
Assuming that's the answer, of course.

The photos from Omsk look like head binding to me ...

Compare them with the photo at ... [Dead Link] ... illustrating a child with a bound / elongated skull (Mangbetu; central Africa).

Here's the text and photo from the MIA webpage ...

Mangbetu and skull elongation

The Mangbetu live in central Africa, north of the Congo. When the first Europeans entered in this region in the late 19th century, the Mangbetu were accustomed to practicing the elongation of the head. For this, they enveloppaient the skulls of newborns with a cord which was tightened gradually for several months.
The elongated heads were collected by the Mangbetu as an expression of beauty and as a sign of intelligence.

Ahhh but why do people find elongated heads intelligent, who are they trying to copy [as there are no humans naturally looking like that]?

Answer: Aliens of course... ;)

Not speculative at all there.

OMFG

Sorry, just had to ;)

More seriously, does anyone think a bound head looks ugly?

Very seriously (perhaps too seriously for me), foot binding is just perverted. But this stuff actually looks good; I understand why they would do it.

I know it's in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I think those coneheads must have been ugly as sin when they were alive

I agree. One of my pet hates is a flat-head as you find in eastern Europe or Russia, which is achieved by binding the whole baby and leaving them to lie on their back all day. It makes people look stupid, whereas elongated heads make people look more intelligent and esthetically [sp?] pleasing.

I had always believed that head binding was common amongst either the Vandals or Goths, but a quick "Google" doesn't provide me with any supporting articles.

I believe it was the Huns?

There was an excavation of human skeletons with elongated skullsat Kow Swamp, Australia.Instead of the usual head-binding conclusion the academic deabte eventually settled in favour of some sort of homo erectus /sapiens hybrid.
Interestingly , the local aborigines (that word being a generic term which could eb applied to indigenous peoples anywhere) claimeed the 10000 yearold remains as their own and demanded their reburial.

Archeologists Unearth Alien-Like Skulls In A Mexico Cemetery
December 27, 2012

Archeologists have unearthed what looks like a cone-shaped alien skull from 1,000 years ago in Mexico.
The skull, which dates from 945 A.D. to 1308 A.D., was discovered accidentally while digging an irrigation system in the northwest state of Sonora in Mexico.

Cristina Garcia Moreno, who worked on the project with Arizona State University, explained that 13 of the 25 skulls found in the Hispanic cemetery had these deformed heads.
“We don’t know why this population specifically deformed their heads,” Moreno told ABC News.

The site, known as El Cementerio, was discovered in 1999, but the team just completed their analysis of the skeletal remains last month. They plan to continue their research during the next field season. Archaeologists also discovered artifacts on the site, like pendants, nose rings and jewelry.

They said the deformation of human skulls was part of an ancient ritual that took place 1,000 years ago. The deformation was achieved by binding a person’s head between two blocks of wood to apply pressure on the skull by wrapping the wood with bands.

“Cranial deformation has been used by different societies in the world as a ritual practice, or for distinction of status within a group or to distinguish between social groups,” Moreno told ABC News. “The reason why these individuals at El Cementerio deformed their skulls is still unknown.”

The team said that many of the bones unearthed were the remains of children, leading them to believe the practice of deforming skulls “may have been inlet [?] and dangerous.”

The Chinook of the U.S. Northwest and the Choctaw of the U.S. Southeast both were known for practicing skull deformation as well.

Moreno told ABC that people deformed their heads in Mexico because they wanted to distinguish important people, or they wanted to distinguish people from one group from another.

DNA Analysis of Paracas Elongated Skull Released – With Incredible Results

Paracas is a desert peninsula located within the Pisco Province in the Ica Region, on the south coast of Peru. ...

It is here were Peruvian archaeologist, Julio Tello, made an amazing discovery in 1928, a massive and elaborate graveyard containing tombs filled with the remains of individuals with the largest elongated skulls found anywhere in the world.

These have come to be known as the ‘Paracas skulls’. In total, Tello found more than 300 of these elongated skulls, which are believed to date back around 3,000 years.

A DNA analysis has now been conducted on one of the skulls and expert Brien Foerster has released preliminary information regarding these enigmatic skulls. It is well-known that most cases of skull elongation are the result of cranial deformation, head flattening, or head binding, in which the skull is intentionally deformed by applying force over a long period of time.

It is usually achieved by binding the head between two pieces of wood, or binding in cloth.

However, while cranial deformation changes the shape of the skull, it does not alter its volume, weight, or other features that are characteristic of a regular human skull. The Paracas skulls, however, are different.

The cranial volume is up to 25 percent larger and 60 percent heavier than conventional human skulls, meaning they could not have been intentionally deformed through head binding/flattening.

They also contain only one parietal plate, rather than two. The fact that the skulls’ features are not the result of cranial deformation means that the cause of the elongation is a mystery, and has been for decades.

Mr. Juan Navarro, owner and director of the local museum, called the Paracas History Museum, which houses a collection of 35 of the Paracas skulls, allowed the taking of samples from 5 of the skulls.

The samples consisted of hair, including roots, a tooth, skull bone and skin, and this process was carefully documented via photos and video. The samples were sent to the late Lloyd Pye, founder of the Starchild Project, who delivered the samples to a geneticist in Texas for DNA testing.

The results are now back, and Brien Foerster, author of more than ten books and an authority on the ancient elongated headed people of South America, has just revealed the preliminary results of the analysis.

He reports on the geneticist's findings:

"It had mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) with mutations unknown in any human, primate, or animal known so far. But a few fragments I was able to sequence from this sample indicate that if these mutations will hold we are dealing with a new human-like creature, very distant from Homo sapiens, Neanderthals and Denisovans."

"The implications are huge."

“I am not sure it will even fit into the known evolutionary tree,” the geneticist wrote.

He added that if the Paracas individuals were so biologically different, they would not have been able to interbreed with humans.

The results need to be replicated and more analysis undertaken before final conclusions can be drawn. We will update when more details emerge.

If he's right then this is interesting.

That link doesn't work for me but I have done a lot of reading and youtubing about this.
I think there are both. I think the head binding types might be copying the authentic "coneheads." There are skulls where it isn't just misshaped but the volume is substantially greater. There are also large conehead skulls where the plates are not like typical human skulls. Not just one, but numerous large coneheads with the same unusual plates.
Speculating about who these people were is where the real fun begins. Biblical giants, Anunaki, space aliens all end up in the discussion.
I tend toward the accounts of ancient giants found in the bible and many other sources.

I read the link when it was first posted in this thread, but now I too get denied.
