Fear in the Fens is a festival of classic horror, which includes film, talks and performance, takes takes place in Downham Market, Norfolk, October 26-28.
This year’s festival has a distinctly Gothic theme in honour of the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
In addition to showing The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), there will be creepy haunted-house scares with The Haunting (1963) and a rare screening of Borley Rectory (2017) – an elegant retro-styled documentary on the Most Haunted House in Britain starring Reece Shearsmith.
As always, Fear in the Fens will be bringing some great speakers on related subjects, including:
Christine Pike – talking about women and the Gothic sensibility. From Ann Radcliffe, by way of Scooby Doo, to mediums and mad houses, Christine Pike takes us on a lively romp through some of the byways of classic Gothic fiction.
John West – will be talking about Borley Church and other famous East Anglian hauntings.
Dr Charlie Oughton – writer, broadcaster and lecturer Charlie Oughton will be examining the ever-facing change of Gothic and its wider impact on mainstream society. From Mary Shelley to Rocky Horror and the Simpsons via Bride of Frankenstein!
Once again, the festival will be screening locally made horror shorts from East Anglian film makers.
The festival will close on Sunday October 28 with a performance of Tales from the Coulson Archive by Christine Pike.
