Broadcasting from the moon...
For those living in Australia, Flash Gordon is on SBS tonight at 8:30 pm. This is a classic film, up there in its badness with Iron Sky (Nazi's on the moon!), Wasp Woman and Plan 9 From Outer Space!

especially Brian Blessed! :D

Flesh Gordon was quite entertaining too.

My favourite bit though is in the sequel where the rocket takes off and goes past King Kong having a pee from the top of a skyscraper. :D

How ahead of it's time was this!

Aahh, Flesh Gordon. I saw on first release & never since. I have a vague memory of it being slightly titillating & the humour laid on with a trowel in a sort of Mel Brooks style.

In what way ahead of it's time I'm wondering?..

Never seen it. So was it Porno or what? Or just a Porkies type thing?

Some call it a porno, but it's really just 1970s Playboy cartoon strip humour with real topless ladies added, no hardcore. The special effects are the best bit.

I saw Flash Gordon on the big screen as a kid and it made quite an impression on me. I revisit it every few years and find something new to entertain me every time. It's the Barbarella of 1980.

The thing about FG is that you sit there thinking "How much worse could it get?!" and then it gets worse, which makes you think how brilliant it is! (And thank the god of your choice that Queen did the soundtrack!)

My uncle went to school with the bloke who played Flash .. just saying ..

Sam J. Jones!? So he knows what his real voice sounds like?!

I didn't know that wasn't his real voice ! .. anyhoo, they both went to posh school Repton, the school they used to film Goodbye Mr. Chips ..

Repton? excellent archaeology in the grounds of Repton!

Wait, what, are we saying Sam J Jones was dubbed?

I'll have to see if I can track down some episodes of 'The Highwayman' to see if his voice is different. Complete aside Highwayman was aces and skills and I was really gutted when it finished after only nine episodes. Imagine then my joy at being told by my mum 'oh it's being repeated on Sunday afternoons' only to sit down in front of the telly and realise when Michael Landon came on she thought I meant 'Highway to Heaven'.

Yes, producer Dino De Horrendous didn't like poor Sam's voice so he was dubbed without his knowledge. Found out at the premiere or something like that. If you see him in Ted (the rude teddy bear movie) you can hear his real voice in that.

I really enjoyed Iron Sky, though. Completely daft, of course (Lunar Nazis riding motorbikes and driving VW Beetles), but knowingly daft, and huge fun.
