Forgotten History

The Pathans used to do the same on the Northwest Frontier. l’m sure that l read that in either David Niven’s The Moon’s a Balloon or John Masters’ excellent military memoir Bugles and a Tiger.

It was explained to me by an MP who was showing us round a kind of 'museum' for such things in Dekalia. There were also cut-down .303 cartridges reloaded as .45 revolver rounds. The bullets for those were really rough casting.

The dig uncovering Glencoe's dark secrets

By Kenneth Macdonald
BBC Scotland special correspondent

11 May 2019

Archaeology and history enthusiasts are being encouraged to dig deep into the massacre of Glencoe.

The slaughter happened in February 1692, when troops billeted with Clan MacDonald of Glencoe turned on their hosts.

Why don't they mention that the Campbells did it?

Because that's not what it says in Outlander - the new official history of Scotland for those who've never been. Outlander having superceded Professor Melrose Gibson's seminal Braveheart, that work having been accused of rampant political correctness in not portraying the English as just quite sadistic enough, and suggesting - albeit fleetingly - that the Scots might just have spent some time fighting the buggery out of each other. And it didn't have some woman's clothes falling off every ten minutes.

Not enough Sassenach gore spilled in it!

Today in 1568 Queen Elizabeth I of England orders the arrest of Mary, Queen of Scots.

#NotForgotten #ScoreToSettle
Lizzie was all for restoring mary to the throne, her advisors were appalled, pointing out that after hundreds of years there was a friendly government in Scotland.

Mary tried to bump of liz when she had been imprisoned without trial for years, I blame the Scottish government and that nasty pile of poo knox.

Nazi Germany's Black Population, forgotten for generations.

Film director Amma Asante came across an old photograph taken in Nazi Germany of a black schoolgirl by chance.

Standing among her white classmates, who stare straight into the camera, she enigmatically glances to the side. Curiosity about the photograph - who the girl was and what she was doing in Germany - set the award-winning film-maker off on a path that led to Where Hands Touch, a new movie starring Amandla Stenberg and George MacKay. It is an imagined account of a mixed-race teenager's clandestine relationship with a Hitler Youth member, but it is based on historical record.

In the Nazi era, from 1933 to 1945, African-Germans numbered in their thousands. There was no uniform experience, but over time, they were banned from having relationships with white people, excluded from education and types of employment, and some were sterilised, while others were taken to concentration camps.

We were taught about this at school, a "moral panic" about the presence of Senegalese-French troops in the Rhineland after World War I

Sven Hassel, known for taking poetical licence (and of course, there is a conspiracy about if such a man really wrote the books under that name) mentions a World War II mixed-race German soldier in one of his books (I forget which one.)

Far from a nonsensical notion, it was reality.

The pakol would be the hat. Very popular in Afghanistan and Pakistan - look a bit like a cottage loaf that someone sat on.

Thought this might be of interest and not sure where else to post it...

I remember reading that some 'words' were said when a branch of McDonald's was included in the new Glencoe Visitor Centre.

Storm Hannah uncovers Borth 'sunken' underwater forest

A prehistoric forest which was buried under water and sand more than 4,500 years ago has been uncovered by Storm Hannah.

The petrified trees lie between Ynyslas and Borth in Ceredigion county.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-48407795
I'm a bit puzzled by the time-scales, here: surely 4500 years is not long enough for wood to petrify? Or were the trees already petrified, and just inundated back then?

Cannot be sure if they were petrified before being covered by the sea.
Reading the above article it suggests the area was farmed until 1400 years ago, so the forest was probably there in it's current petrified form and then was subsequently flooded in the 7th century.
This archived article speculates:

It is also noted that petrification can take place rapidly under certain conditions. Though no idea of knowing whether those conditions applied.

An atmospheric tour of Halifax in 1902, someone's put a lot of love into this restoration. I like the comedy staged fight two opportunists decided to do at 6:50 for a laugh .. even then, we were playing up for a camera when we spotted one ..

The restoration and I'm guessing slowing of the film adds a real hauntological feel to it, a brilliant find Swifty.

You have to wonder how many of those young lads would be blown to bits on French/Belgium fields 12 years later?

Also it's interesting to see how few people are smoking in the film -I'd have expected a lot more.

The Atomic Soldiers

23 minute video of eyewitness accounts from US servicemen who witnessed atomic bomb tests in the 50s/60s. Some in trenches reckoned to be a mile or less from ground zero. As one man puts it, they were used as guinea pigs. Sworn to secrecy for 50 years & told they couldn't discuss it with family, friends, or even amongst themselves. It clearly had a traumatic effect & left them with health issues which the government denies any responsibility for. Powerful stuff.
