Fortean Documentaries

Executive Produced by Martin Scorsese and Lori Cheatle http://dreamingwalls.com/ The legendary Chelsea Hotel, an icon of 1960s counterculture and a haven for famous artists and intellectuals including Patti Smith, Janis Joplin and the superstars of Warhol's Factory, is under renovation. Soon it will reopen to the public as one of New York's most fashionable luxury hotels. Dozens of people, most in their later years, still live amidst the scaffolding and constant construction. Against this chaotic backdrop, the film takes us through the hotel’s storied halls, exploring its living body and the bohemian origins that contributed to its mythical stature. Its residents—casualties of capitalism—and the walls themselves now face a turning point in their common history. Directed by Amélie van Elmbt and Maya Duverdier

It's unfortunate that the only copy currently viewable (below) is absolutely dire quality, and I mean really dire, but the single most memorable Fortean documentary I have seen remains The Ghostman of Skye, a stand alone documentary film broadcast in a shortened version on the BBC about 15 years back:

The central premise is that it's really about the 'investigator', and his efforts to deal with grief and loss. A lot of people will find it very slow. But the repeated interviews with serious, largely elderly Hebrideans and their stories of odd, apparitional vehicles and the like have a sort of hypnotic effect, particularly combined with the landscape shots:

It was some sort of vehicle. It came up from the sea and went right across the road and away up the hill. It was just like a hearse. Just like a glow. (22.30ish)

NB you can in fact rent / purchase a copy of the original version via Vimeo.

Check out the trailer for HBO Original, Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes, which takes a deep-dive behind the 1986 disaster of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Watch never before seen footage and get real-life accounts of the horrific accident. Coming to HBO Max June 22.

Edit to add the title of this doc - How To Change Your Mind
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney and New York Times best-selling author Michael Pollan present this documentary series event in four parts, each focused on a different mind-altering substance: LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, and mescaline. With Pollan as our guide, we journey to the frontiers of the new psychedelic renaissance – and look back at almost-forgotten historical context – to explore the potential of these substances to heal and change minds as well as culture. How to Change Your Mind is directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Alison Ellwood and two-time Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Lucy Walker.

Looks like Victoria's Secret: Angels & Demons is going to put Jeffrey Epstein's involvement front and center:
Investigated with journalistic rigor by director Matt Tyrnauer, this documentary tells the searing and provocative story of the Victoria’s Secret brand and its longtime CEO, the larger-than-life, enigmatic billionaire Les Wexner. The underworld of fashion, the billionaire class, and Jeffrey Epstein are all revealed to be inextricably intertwined with the fall of this legendary brand in “Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons.”

Old school VHS doco series on UFOs. Blew some stagnant minds back in the day. All the alumni are present. People like Greer continue to peddle the same schtick 30 years on. Have we moved on or found any concrete answers? hmm nah

Enjoy the trip back to Blunderland.

In Part 2, at 9:30 he is discussing the UFO seen in Passaic, NJ, in 1952. The house is still there, I drive past there all the time, and I posted the photos here somewhere.
The photos had cropped out the house and surrounding, but from the full photos here one can see that the disc is sizeable, it's not just a hat thrown up in the air as someone commented.
And according to this video, George Stock, who took those photos at his home, was visited by the CIA who wanted the negatives of his photos. They took six negatives, and Stock had to fight for a long time to get them returned to him, and even then he only got 5 back.
Interesting that Stock's photos looked exactly like a UFO photo taken in Washington DC the same year.

Some interesting interviews once you get past the self-aggrandising bollocks. Skip to minute 5 or 6.
The first pilot describes a transparent sphere containing a dark grey cube and it nearly hit his F18. This is newer Nimitz-type detail. Pretty cool.

The story continues. Set against the backdrop of the federal trial of The United States against Keith Raniere, #TheVowHBO Part Two offers an exclusive view into Raniere’s innermost circle, including NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman. It follows the legal and emotional journeys of the group’s founders, supporters and defectors as new evidence and stunning revelations come to light, while federal prosecutors and defense attorneys battle with opposing views of justice in a case caught in the national spotlight.

Nice production about the Point Pleasant encounters of the mid 60s. Interviews with eyewitnesses. Quite well presented.

It’s very good. I feel we should give credit to Seth Breedlove and Small Town Monsters who made this documentary:

Some of their excellent work is released for free and some are available online for a modest fee. Thier specialism is tracking down original witnesses. Why not support a very worthwhile Fortean cause….

The Amazing World of Ghosts (1978)
Also features the yeti, bigfoot , the Loch Ness Monster (who is 'many hundreds of feet long).,Alister Crowley, UFOs, and psychic surgery. The narration is just amazing! And did you know camels store water in their humps?

Moment of Contact is an exploration of extraterrestrial encounters, this one centered on a series of events in 1996 when citizens of Varginha, Brazil, reported seeing one or more strange creatures and a UFO crash. A number of locals, including a group of girls ranging in age from 14-21, had a close encounter with a being described as about 4 feet tall, with brown oily skin, a large head and huge red eyes.

I can't wait to see this one!
This eye-opening documentary chronicles the rise, fall, and reinvention of revered and reviled ’90s TV psychic Miss Cleo. Featuring interviews with celebrities and those closest to the self-proclaimed voodoo priestess, the film explores the many layers behind a complicated and charismatic figure. Watch Call Me Miss Cleo on December 15, only on HBO Max.

I've just taken the time to have a look at Reelgood having signed up for it years ago. I'm making a list on it of documentaries that I may like to watch in the future, based upon what subscription services we have.

If you have Prime and are UK based there is a programme available 'Amish Haunting (2014 - 2014)'. I haven't watched it but it may interest someone if you have Amazon Prime.

This is Fortean by way of the incredible images they produced....
Celebrated photographer, creative director and filmmaker Anton Corbijn’s first feature documentary SQUARING THE CIRCLE (the story of hipgnosis) tells the story of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell, the creative geniuses behind the iconic album art design studio, Hipgnosis, responsible for some of the most recognizable album covers of all time. They formed Hipgnosis in Cambridge during the ferment of the sixties and became rock royalty during the boom time of the seventies. They conjured into existence sights that no one had previously thought possible, produced visuals which popularized music that had previously been considered fringe, and were at the white-hot center of the maddest, funniest and most creative era in the history of popular music. During this period, record companies didn’t dictate to acts like Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney what their LP covers should look like - Storm and Po did. They made money; they lost money. They did great things; they did silly things. They fell out bitterly; they made up. They never played a note, but they changed music. The film features brand new interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour & Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Graham Gouldman of 10cc, Noel Gallagher, and many more.

Documentary from Australia's Channel 7 News that came out last year.
