Fortean Headlines

I don't know if we've got something like a 'general piss takers' thread so I'm dumping this here. He's not even the first person to have pulled this exact same stunt ..

Danish artist told to repay museum €67,000 after turning in blank canvasses

Years ago, the city of London, Ontario actually purchased a piece titled "The Voice of God". It consisted of a broad red vertical stripe centred with one broad white stripe on each side.

There was much conversation regarding paying someone for this as anyone can paint that. Can you imagine your tax dollars paying for that?

‘Unusual’ creature found in Brazil is world’s first known fox-dog hybrid, study says

https://amp.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/article279365014.html

The animal was hit by a car and taken to a vet. The vet decided there was something odd about it and ran genetic tests, so the identification seems fairly definite.

What makes this interesting is that I remember reading years ago that foxes and dogs were too genetically dissimilar for a hybrid to be possible. Well, apparently that's not the case.

Yep I heard about both of those 'incidents'. I've been to and cosplayed at the Sheringham 40's weekend once in the past and it's brilliant. I wore an authentic 80 year old U.S. army uniform and I've no idea how they fought wearing that stuff. I weighs a ton.

I've never been to the carnival fancy dress night. That's held in the carnival field and you have to buy £20 tickets in advance although I've been told it's a good night. I'm a bit to old for it. A younger ex co worker loved it and went every year. One year he decided to go as 'a black man' (I'm not making this up). Some friends told me the next day that a real black man/person of colour walked over to him and said "Who have you come as?" and this kid just said "A black man." ................ that could have gone wrong quickly but I was told the other man cracked up laughing instead and him and the kid ended up having a pint together in the beer tent instead. :). That didn't make the papers.

I wonder if the hybrid is actually viable to breed?
Walking down the road carrying a cash register. I amazed he was caught.
One morning, living on the North Kent coast, we discovered a cash register that had been stolen from a nearby tat ... er ... gift shop. They'd levered open the tray and stolen the notes but, for some reason, left the bagged up coins.
There's no hope for some people.

At last!
Nick Fury - as played by Rutger Hauer in the film Blind Fury - has been honoured!*

* Yeah, I know. It was a take on a Japanese film, but I've not got that 'un.

My guess it's a variation of the fisherman's tale with exaggeration at each retelling (or mental rehearsal of the story).

It was 6 to 12 inches long, soon becomes...
It was nearly a foot long, which soon becomes
It was about a foot long, becomes
It was a foot long, becomes
It was at least a foot long, becomes
It was over a foot long, becomes
It was well over a foot long, becomes
It must have been nearly 18 inches long...
And so on through increments ad infinitum.

With a rat, this process of incremental exaggeration may also include variants of "including the tail" becoming "plus the tail" and the failing to mention the tail...

Though there's always been tales of 'rats as big as cats/dogs.'
With my first hearing, it was my Dad coming home from work in the Silvertown docks. Dockside rats were 'the size of dogs' etc.

New Mexico fire officials on Monday, Sept. 29 released their final update, unless there are significant changes, on Alien Fire that started just west of Las Vegas

Parts of town were briefly evacuated as crews from across the region to get the fire under control, but now evacuations have been lifted. Some resources were released on Sept. 24 and Sept. 25 and crews will continue to monitor the area.

This piqued my interest. I tried to find out why it is called Alien Fire. It is a wildfire. Does the US name their wildfires? I can't find out why it would be named.

Not forgetting:
"Matilda Briggs was not the name of a young woman, Watson," said Holmes in a reminiscent voice. "It was a ship which is associated with the giant rat of Sumatra, a story for which the world is not yet prepared."

I believe there was a short-story anthology which featured several 'titles' hinted at in the original books - The Matilda Briggs, for one. I must have a delve and see if I can find it. :)

25-year-old son allegedly kicked his father to death after 74-year-old picked a fight because he wanted him ‘to get to Valhalla’

/that is not how you get to Valhalla

https://lawandcrime.com/crime/i-kic...ight-because-he-wanted-him-to-get-to-valhalla
----------------------------------------------------------
Satisfied that his father would not try to get up anymore, Clayton Garcia allegedly went inside their shared house to get his father’s favorite travel mug – which featured “hieroglyphic designs” – and threw it at him “as hard as he could,” according to the complaint. The mug bounced off the dead man, the defendant allegedly said, so he went and retrieved it and set it down next to his father. The defendant then explained that if his father was going to Valhalla, he would want to take that particular mug with him, according to the complaint.

“Clayton also stated that he needed his father to die because dying in a fight was the only way for him to get to ‘Valhalla,'” the complaint reads. The detective later wrote: “Clayton advised that Jorge had been trying to fight Clayton for years and wanting Clayton to kill him so that he could go to Valhalla but Clayton never wanted to.”
