Fortean Headlines

Woman falls in love with her "dream house". The owners plan to demolish it. She buys it and has it floated across about a kilometre of water to a new location. It almost sinks on the way.

In a fine example of the BBC's commitment to accurate reportage, we learn that a "kilometre is roughly the same length as a football pitch." (Wrong by a factor of about 10.)

Which is basically about as much as my commitment to Llama farming in the Galapagos Islands.

Although the BBC has about 22,000 staff, the majority of them are still sitting around doing sod all working from home, from their mothers back bedrooms, and have an average age of about 15.
It's little wonder that their editorial standards have slipped considerably during the past couple of years.
They can't even use correct spelling and grammar in their news articles now, with silly 'schoolboy errors' such as writing 'Could of' instead of 'Could have' or 'Could've'.

Facebook's announcement that it is changing its name to Meta has caused quite the stir in Israel where the word sounds like the Hebrew word for "dead".
To be precise, Meta is pronounced like the feminine form of the Hebrew word.
A number of people have taken to Twitter to share their take on the name under the hashtag #FacebookDead.
The emergency rescue volunteers Zaka even got involved, telling their followers on Twitter: "Don't worry, we're on it".

The article also highlights other blunders, where the KFC tagline of 'Finger lickin' good' got mangled in Mandarin as "Eat your fingers off", the Honda 'Fitta' that was Swedish vulgate for vulva, or the Nokia Lumia phone line that was a lady of the night in a Spanish dialect.

There are those who argue that the Facebook rebrand was something that was planned for 12-18 months time when the metaverse project is starting to produce deliverables and was only brought forward due to the wave of toxicity resulting from the recent whistleblower revelations.

This irritated me when I first heard it. Greek and Latin are in common use in the scientific community and are the common sources of new words in English. Hebrew is very much a minority language that most people never encounter. We have metaphysics, metastasis, metaphorical, and many other words in common use featuring the meta prefix or root. Then, presumably because it's "big bad Facebook" (whatever your views on that) it suddenly becomes a spectacular own goal, risible, etc.

Problem is that the average level of general knowledge is now so low that most people would not make the connection to Greek meta and will be fooled into thinking that this is a story.

Most tales of brands being inappropriate or slogans being mistranslated in other languages irritate me. Most are wildly exaggerated, like "Bite the wax tadpole", or virtually nonsensical, like the Chevy "No va" or this Hebrew example. It's about as mature as when a child giggles at the word "ballcock".

It is puerile, and I will never stop laughing at it.

It is approximately 35 years since I did my basic metalwork training and I still giggle when I hear the term bastard file.
