Maybe, it's a sort of a best suggestion situation, as there's a number of maybes involved within the explanatory text?'
I wasn't disagreeing with your explanation. I was only showing you that someone also agreed with it. Your comment seemed to express doubt in your own explanation.:)

In the general vein of WTAF....

No problem 'brownmane.' I was actually referring to the original report. :bpals:

North Somerset 'gimp' sightings: Teen describes freaky encounter
A teenager has described a "freaky" late-night encounter with a man wearing a "gimp suit".
The 19-year-old said he was approached by the man in Cleeve, North Somerset, at about 00:25 BST on Tuesday.
He said the man was "unpredictable, flopping to the floor, writhing and grunting".

Air Force claims ‘no intent by the pilots’ to draw sky penis near Russian base in Syria

"The leadership for U.S. Air Forces in Europe has determined that a KC-135 aerial tanker did not mean to fly in a phallic flight pattern near a Russian base in Syria recently, said USAFE spokesman Capt. Ryan Goss.

“The KC-135 Stratotanker (RAKE71) operating in the Eastern Mediterranean adjusted between multiple different flight tracks during the course of the mission,” Goss said in a recent statement. “While these adjustments and movements appear to create a vulgar outline, there was no intent by the pilots or the unit to do so. As we continue to look into this, USAFE-AFAFRICA, AMC [Air Mobility Command] and the USAF will continue to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and airmanship.”

Earlier this week, the aircraft took off from Chania International Airport and flew east of Cyprus. FlightRadar24, a flight tracking service, shows that the KC-135’s flight path included an oval and two circles, prompting the Italian newspaper la Repubblica to speculate that the plane had drawn a sky penis in front of Russia’s naval base in Tartus, Syria."

You be the judge:

What you see here is a KC-135 tanker arriving from the northwest, south of Cyprus, then entering and traversing a designated aerial refueling track in a "racetrack" (oval) configuration. The "racetrack" is the "penis." The "balls" represent circling to adjust altitude on-station and / or to start or end a rendezvous with one or more receiver aircraft at the entry / exit points designated for the AR track.

You spoil all our fun.

Oh come on, the pilots knew exactly what they were doing but the Air Force denied it being deliberate.
Surely the adjustments to their height etc could have simply been done while staying in the oval without flying outside of it to make two solitary loops?
Oh they knew alright....and were probably laughing like drains while they were doing it.
USAF refuelling pilots gotta get their laughs somehow.

They knew exactly what they were doing, but what they were doing had nothing to do with drawing a temporary penile figure in the sky.

No, that's not how it works / how it's done.

Nobody's allowed to get laughs by dumping up to 80,000 pounds of jet fuel into the atmosphere just for kicks.

Nevertheless, I'm still of the opinion that they could have achieved the complete fulfilment of their task without the trace looking genital in any way. Otherwise this would be an extremely common thing, not worthy of remark.

No, they couldn't ... The protocols for conducting AR missions are standardized and rigidly enforced. The "trace" left on the aircraft radar tracking is the prototypical pattern for an AR mission supporting a designated racetrack-style AR track.

So what your saying is their tracks always look like this then?
Cah. Some guys have all the fun.

So what your saying is their tracks always look like this then? ...
Pre-planned tracks (whether transient or long-term) of the "racetrack" variety will always show the elongated oval portion. Each such track will have its associated entry and exit points. The smaller circular paths (if they occur) represent loitering, altitude adjustments, and / or rendezvous orbiting associated with entering / exiting the designated track.

There are other track formats besides the "racetrack" variety, but all designated / pre-defined tracks will have specifications for end points and rendezvous / entry locations.

Radar traces show aircraft operating in accordance with their mission / flight plans, and in the case of AR missions these plans are executed within a virtual landscape of pre-defined locations and subject to prescribed protocols for accessing and using those locations.

For example, here's a map of the AR tracks established for air combat operations over the former Yugoslavia during the 1999 air campaign. See the numerous "racetracks" encircling the theater ...
