Duck! Octopuses caught on camera throwing things at each other

Cephalopods living unusually close together have been filmed throwing shells, algae and silt — sometimes at another octopus.

For the first time, octopuses have been spotted throwing things — at each other.

Octopuses are known for their solitary nature, but in Jervis Bay, Australia, the gloomy octopus (Octopus tetricus) lives at very high densities. A team of cephalopod researchers decided to film the creatures with underwater cameras to see whether — and how — they interact.

Once the researchers pulled the cameras out of the water, they sat down to watch more than 20 hours of footage. “I call it octopus TV,” laughs co-author David Scheel, a behavioural ecologist at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage. One behaviour stood out: instances in which the eight-limbed creatures gathered shells, silt or algae with their arms — and then hurled them away, propelling them with water jetted from their siphon. And although some of the time it seemed that they were just throwing away debris or food leftovers, it did sometimes appear that they were throwing things at each other.

The team found clues that the octopuses were deliberately targeting one another. Throws that made contact with another octopus were relatively strong and often occurred when the thrower was displaying a uniform dark or medium body colour. Another clue: sometimes the octopuses on the receiving end ducked. Throws that made octo-contact were also more likely to be accomplished with a specific set of arms, and the projectile was more likely to be silt.

KFC apologises for Kristallnacht chicken promotion

KFC has been forced to apologise after sending a notification to German customers encouraging them to commemorate the Kristallnacht anti-Jewish pogrom with fried chicken and cheese.

The fast food chain sent a notification yesterday suggesting customers "treat themselves" on the anniversary of the 1938 Kristallnacht, or Night of Broken Glass, the Bild daily reported.

On 9 November 1938, Nazi mobs torched and ransacked synagogues and Jewish-owned businesses across Germany in what is widely seen as the start of the Third Reich's drive to wipe out Jews.

"Commemoration of Kristallnacht -- Treat yourself to more soft cheese and crispy chicken. Now at KFCheese!," the message reportedly read.

KFC sent another message around an hour later blaming the blunder on "an error in our system", Bild said.

"We are very sorry, we will check our internal processes immediately so that this does not happen again. Please excuse this error," the message said.

That's a good left hook!

Wasn't there also a report that due to 'mail-in ballots', there were a lot of votes cast somewhere which were found to be people that had died?
If that's true then there is every possibility that somewhere there could be a dead candidate elected by dead people.

Rats 'have rhythm and can dance to Lady Gaga'

Rats have rhythm, and will bop to Queen, Lady Gaga and even Mozart, scientists have discovered.

Accurately moving to a musical beat was thought to be a skill largely unique to humans, with only a handful of animals - such as cockatoos - demonstrating synchronisation to music with training.

To find out if rodents had an innate ability to sync to a beat, scientists at the University of Tokyo fitted rats with wireless, miniature accelerometers, which could measure the slightest head movements.

They were then played one-minute excerpts from Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, at four different speeds.

The original tempo is 132 beats per minute (bpm) and results showed that the rats beat their heads most in time when the music was played in the 120-140 bpm range.

The rats also managed to keep time with Queen’s Another One Bites The Dust, and Born This Way by Lady Gaga.

Scientist claims to have seen evidence of parallel universes 'more habitable than earth'

It’s not quite as exciting as it sounds.

And this article is a perfect example of why you need specialist science journalists.

I understand there's an article on Chicago that says it's much more roomy than my bathroom.

Honestly, how dare they quote a "scientist" who believes in something as radical as The Copernican Principle! At least they were together enough to show how it all relates to Rick and Morty.
