Fortean-Themed Albums, Songs & Music

Nico's partial deafness also would sometimes cause her to veer off key, for which she was ridiculed by other band members.
However, that became her signature sound that made her unique.

Now that's an odd coincidence: last year my mother moved house, and I had loads of junk in her attic that I had to clear out. Among the detritus was a large box of c90s, none of them labelled much at all, just roughly when they were taped, but many of them obviously recorded from Radio One when it played proper music and had DJs who had more than one name.. anyway, having rediscovered said box the other week, the very first track on the first one I played was Under Your Thumb, by Godley & Creme. Autumn 1981, apparently, so 27 years ago, which made me suddenly feel very old.

I won't bore you with the other things on the tape, none of which are particularly Fortean, but I guarantee it'd make a lot of other people on here suddenly feel very old as well.
And then, just now on the local radio - Under Your Thumb, by Godley and Creme. Now 36 years ago.

Aaaaargggghhh! I could have sworn I wrote this last year!

GNC,

'Under your thumb', the lyrics.

I was standing in the station
being pounded by the rain
so I chose the last compartment
of a stationary train
I felt someone get in behind me
but I never caught their eye
but I thought I heard I heard a woman''s voice
whispering goodbye

So I lay down in the darkness
with the beer and coffee stains
and I stared out at the thunder
through the broken window panes
And although the storm was booming
like an engine in the sky
I''m sure I heard a woman''s voice cry

Don''t wanna be under your thumb forever
Don''t wanna be under your thumb forever
Don''t wanna be under your thumb
it''s over and done
I''ll never be under your thumb forever

So I rolled myself a cigarette
and smoked it on my own
but it didn''t stop the whispers
or the smell of her cologne
Then she rose up out of nowhere
and her hair was full of steam
and she stuck her head out the window
and screamed and screamed, she screamed!

Don''t wanna be under your thumb forever
Don''t wanna be under your thumb forever
Don''t wanna be under your thumb
it''s over and done
I''ll never be under your thumb forever

So I picked up an old newspaper to read
and I noticed something very strange indeed
So I looked a little closer
and it chilled me to the bone
"Woman throws herself from speeding train,
identity unknown"
But I recognized the picture of the woman who was dead
and underneath the picture it said

Don''t wanna be under your thumb forever
Don''t wanna be under your thumb forever
Don''t wanna be under your thumb
it''s over and done
I''ll never be under your thumb forever

Don''t wanna be under your thumb forever
Don''t wanna be under your thumb forever
Don''t wanna be under your thumb
it''s over and done
I''ll never be under your thumb forever

Thanks! I don't follow the music charts as much as I used to, do we still get Fortean tunes? Has Ed Sheeran conjured up one about the time he saw an old lady standing at the foot of his bed, or has Tinie Tempah related his missing time UFO encounter? Not saying those happened... but what if they did?

Or Ozzy Osbourne's Mr Crowley - worth a listen for the astonishing guitar solo by the late great Randy Rhodes:

One of my favorite Fortean songs.

Sorry, I haven't succeed to copy the lyrics here with my phone...

'The Visitation' : White Noise.

I don't know if anyone will be able to find this. someone 'borrowed' my copy of the LP so I can't add any more details.

But it's worth a listen if you can find it.

Saw Blue Öyster Cult on Wednesday night at Nottingham Rock City - 45th anniversary tour.
More Fortean subjects than you can shake a weird stick at.

"Real World"

Rains of fish and rains of frogs
Arias sung by mongrel dogs
Whispers from the desert stones
Divinations in lizard bones

Something beyond is reaching out to you
Something beyond
Is reaching out
Yeah

Discs that stretch into cigars
Angels buy drinks in skid row bars
Virgin mary winks from the sky
Trees twist into secret signs

Something beyond is reaching out to you
Something beyond
Is reaching out

Strange We think our lives are real
Strange Amusement parks, our business deals
Strange Stranger still our empty lives
TV replacing kids and wife
Strange Lives consumed with soapy talk
Lives lived in fear of taking a walk

Oh the real world is bizarre enough for me
Oh the real world - bizarre enough for me

We're drifting in the waiting room
Call it real, but call me real soon
The world is living Gaia's at hand
Hear her laughing in earthquake land

Something beyond is reaching out to you
Something beyond
Is reaching out
Something beyond is reaching out to you
Something beyond
Is reaching out

Reaching out

I love the Cult, have a Cult lyric tattoo!

The album is reputed to contain the most tape edit segments of any ever, recorded as it was before the days of synthesisers & sampling. Delia Derbyshire of BBC Radiophonic Workshop & Dr Who theme tune fame is one of the people involved.

There's a lengthy article by Julian Cope about it here.

Hunk,

That's a very good write up.
I'll have to trawl the web and try to get a CD copy.

Thanks for that.

Did Flying Saucer Attack have a song called Rezillos?

I'm not sue where to post this one, it could also go in what music, sci fi or horror films but it's some funky 80's style darkwave synth pop .. I love it, I've only just found it .. I can just imagine this playing while someone runs through a water soaked L.A. street at night being chased by robot zombies or something similar

Yeah Folklore Tapes is a great label - I've been buying the 'Archival Reissue Series' (missed out the first time round, and the original releases are so limited they cost a pretty penny nowadays).

All of the 'Devon Folklore' stuff is great, double 10" vinyl sets in gatefold sleeves with stunning 'research booklets'. I think Volume 5 may be the only one left in stock on the site now though.

I really want the Black Dog set but it's £58.... http://www.folkloretapes.co.uk/product/ftoci-black-dog-traditions-of-england

Pretty much anything by the Groovie Ghoulies could fit here: Chupacabras, Beast with 5 hands, Running with Bigfoot, (The Girl is) an unsolved mystery ect But here's 50,000 Spaceships (Watching over me) and Brain Srambling Device

Helen Reddy's Angie Baby. The song is about a strange teen who has secret lovers who appear in her room through the radio. When a fellow comes in to assault her, he finds that the radio phenomenon is real and learns to regret his actions. This video acts out what is happening in the song:
