Well, my day got off to a lousy start. From about 0400 I started hearing regular beeps, but I couldn't seem to track down the noise. They were coming about every minute, and could be heard all through the flat, but not in the corridor outside. After about half an hour I realised it was my smoke alarm - a little red light on it flashed with every beep.

I already knew there was no fire, so I pressed the test button to alert the lifeline service. Long story short, they can't get anyone out until about 0730, so here I am on the computer, killing time...

Next time I'll start a fire to get a quicker response!

I think that means the battery is running low. If you can reach the button, can you remove the battery?

I've just had a woman from the Council round. She's been checking up about it, and the smoke alarm gets power from the mains. There is an internal battery in case of mains failure, but it may be that this is no longer accepting charge. She's getting someone to sort it out.

Later someone rang me from the council. He didn't seem to know about the woman's visit - don't these people communicate? Anyhow, he said someone would be round this afternoon. No-one had showed by 1500, so I rang the Council, via a menu that (eventually) got me to Housing repairs. I gave my address, but I was a bit surprised when the woman asked me where that was, and I had to give her the Town. When you're dealing with Council properties, you'd think they'd have a list they can refer to, even if they didn't know from experience where places are.

A man at Repairs told me someone would come... but it's now gone 1600, and I know the workers like to knock off early on a Friday... :(

I can't put up with this bleepin' bleeping all w/e!

Went to the doctors for a minor procedure, Friday is the only day they're able to do this. Sat down, had the local anaesthetic jag then the doc ran around trying to find the correct instrument. It wasn't there. I've to go back next week to get it done.

Would setting it off with a lighter or match get it sorted out sooner? Safety first of course, don't want a stampede.
There's a test button on it that alerts the control room. I've just used that and explained the problem, and was told the workmen do work past 1730, so to leave it for a while and see if anyone does turn up...

I'm not optimistic...

The council people communicating with other? What an absurd thought.

That's nothing, I tried to go camping today but was chased around by an ice hockey goalie. He sure was angry about something.

Funny you should mention that, I was down at my local lake trying to get a bit of kip in my canoe, when this kid jumped out of the water and splashed me!

Kids huh?

My smoke alarm strangeness continues.

The alarms here are connected directly to the local Fire brigade, and at 0200 this morning the FB attended an alarm at this property. But it was not my flat they went to, but one with a similar number, and apparently there was nothing amiss there. This must surely be coincidence, because my smoke alarm did not go off, only producing the 'Battery Low' beeps perhaps a couple of hours later.

But it all makes things more difficult to explain, perhaps reinforcing the beliefs of some council workers that several of their older tenants are barmy!

I've had no sleep now since 0400, but if that alarm bothers me again tonight I may hit it with something until it stops!

I monitor alarms for work and I hate hardwired smoke detectors. You can't tell a client to just pull the battery and wait for morning it has to be dealt with at 3 am. I see why its done though as many people just pull battery and never fix it. If it didn't ring there you probably didn't have an alarm, but low batteries causes so many false alarms, i wouldn't totally rule it out either. At least it didn't go into alarm and you couldn't stop it, those are my nightmare calls.

I forgot to update my Alarm status here on the MB. The council said they'd send someone round on Friday afternoon to fix it, but no-one turned up. I thought that meant I wouldn't see anyone till Monday, but to my surprise someone turned up on Saturday morning and fixed it!

But the weirdness continues - just minutes after reading paranoid's post, above, there was a knock at my door. It was an electrician come to fix my alarm...!!! Talk about spooky coincidences!

A friend had a hospital appointment with a specialist on Friday. He couldn't bring himself to go. He is already expecting bad news and the date was just too much for him.

The last Flight 666.

FRIDAY THE 13TH: FLIGHT 666 MAKES IT SAFELY TO HEL

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The Helsinki airport says Flight 666 has arrived safety in HEL — the airport code for the Finnish capital — for the last time.

The Finnair flight took off from Copenhagen, Denmark, in the 13th hour of Friday the 13th, headed for Helsinki Vantaa airport.

Finavia, which operates Finland’s 21 airports, says the flight landed eight minutes ahead of schedule at 3:47 p.m. local.

The flight started 11 years ago and has fallen on Friday the 13th 21 times with no reported ill effects.

Still, Finnair has decided to retire the flight number. As the carrier is switching around some flight numbers later this month, Flight AY666 will become AY954.

Today is Friday the 13th. It is also a new moon. If the local star were to be occulted with the moon we'd all be awaiting the apocalypse. As it is, a finer (and colder) winter morn I can't recall. The sun is insIStent today. Joyous black Friday.

How's yours?

I might stroll into town for a strong cappuccino, to be enjoyed while people-watching the Star Wars Cantina Scene which is my High Street.

Well, it's summer here, for a start!

Cooler than the last few weeks (though still very warm for the UK), but much more muggy!

I'm assuming that "muggy" means the same the world over. In case not, just pretend that I said "humid" in the first place...

Well, I went to 'work' today and nearly fell asleep doing my 'work'. At least I'm still getting paid for it.
Nothing bad has happened yet...but we still have a few hours left.

Yesterday morning at breakfast I was preparing to down my usual collection of daily nutritional supplements when I broke a cod liver oil gel cap by accident. The contents squirted on my cheek and in my hair. I'd already showered and there was no time to wash my hair again, so I tried to brush out the unwelcome addition. A vague odour of fish nevertheless lingered in my hair for the rest of the day. Since it was Friday, perhaps that was appropriate.

If that's the worst thing that befalls me on a Friday the 13th I shan't complain.

I'm sure it's good for your skin and hair.

^ v Group hug and a pot of tea for all, GT. I just busted a fish oil capsule into my beard and now I smell like fish too. It's you and me against the world.

A beard that smells like fish. An "interesting" excuse. If you are married, better look for a lawyer Skinny, or your missus will probably get that lovely tea set in the settlement.

Yours in solidarity,
Alchopwn.

Thank you for the tea, Skinny! That's a lovely set.

There must be some strange vibe surrounding fish oil capsules... :D
