Funeral Fails & Foul-Ups (Not IHTM)

why this amount?
I have no idea! Now I'm curious.

The incident occurred in Massachusetts in 2019. In that state civil lawsuits may be tried within 2 separate court systems - District Courts and Superior Court. These two court systems have differences (e.g., jury size and appeals options).

Other news stories about this particular lawsuit claim the plaintiffs are seeking $50,000. Some simply say "more than $50,000."

I bet the emphasis on this amount relates to this change that went into effect since 2019 ...
Effective January 1, 2020, the maximum procedural amount (that is, the amount of money damages sought by a plaintiff) for damage cases brought in the District Courts (and Boston Municipal Court) will increase from $25,000 to $50,000. The minimum procedural amount for Superior Court cases will go from $25,000 to $50,000.

Thank you for the info, Enola. I was not aware of this change for civil cases and I'm a Massachusetts resident. I have sat on a jury for district court in Lawrence though, and reported for superior court but was not selected (they paid me though for showing up for two days of the jury selection process.)

The Richmond Police Department said it responded to the Rolling Hills Memorial Park at 1:30 p.m. after several reports of a "chaotic altercation" between eight to 20 family members who were reportedly armed.

Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy said it was an instance of family drama that started between a brother and a sister who were attending their mother's funeral and who do not get along — and "it goes back many years." ...

"He attempted to drive toward his sister in an aggressive way, but instead he struck another female and sent her to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries" ...

In the car, the brother also damaged the grass, knocked over and damaged headstones and vases, and broke a water main that ejected copious amounts of water and flooded the funeral plot, Lt. Matt Stonebraker, a spokesperson for the department, said.

Akron police are trying to untangle the events surrounding the car crash, two instances of gunfire, and resultant death and injuries that disrupted this funeral procession.
Fatal crash, gunfire interrupt teenager’s funeral procession

At least two cars crashed during a funeral procession for a teen who died of a suspected drug overdose, killing a 12-year-old boy and critically injuring his 6-year-old brother, police in Ohio said.

Two episodes of gunfire followed the crash, wounding at least one person.

A marked police cruiser was leading the procession through Akron on Thursday afternoon when the collision occurred.

The boys were riding in a car driven by their mother; witnesses reported that the vehicle had been moving erratically and that passengers had been hanging out of windows. Police said one of the boys was thrown from the car and the other partially ejected. Their mother was not hurt.

It wasn’t clear what caused the crash, but Akron police Lt. Michael Miller said “horseplay” is not uncommon among some drivers in funeral processions in the city.

The mother was expected to face charges stemming from the crash, though it wasn’t clear Friday what counts she might face. ...

Seconds after the crash, a gunshot rang out, and a man who was driving another involved vehicle ran off and has not been found, police said. It wasn’t clear who fired the shot. ...

Authorities said they were looking into whether a third vehicle was involved. A 19-year-old suffered a gunshot wound not considered life-threatening, and investigators were trying to determine his role, if any, in the crash.

Complicating the investigation was a second shooting that occurred minutes later, within sight of the crash scene. More than a dozen shots were fired, but authorities said that no one was injured in that gunfire and that the two shootings appeared to be unrelated.

Officials identified the 12-year-old killed in the crash ... , and an autopsy Friday determined he died of blunt force injuries suffered in the crash. His brother remained hospitalized Friday. His name and the extent of his injuries have not been disclosed.

It wasn’t clear what ties the boys or anyone else involved in the crash may have had with the 17-year-old boy for whom the procession was held.

Saving on cremation costs.

A hearse carrying a coffin has caught fire on the way to a funeral.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to Sandford Avenue in Church Stretton just before 13:20 GMT on Monday.

Members of the public helped rescue the coffin before it was set alight, it added.

In a post on social media, Church Stretton Fire Station said it would have been a sad enough day for the family even before the fire.
