Ghost-Hunting & Paranormal Investigation Groups

I've been interested in the idea of ghost hunting/paranormal investigation for years, and thanks to the net i've got a pretty good idea how to go about it. However, i don't just want to start running around on my own doing things as and when. I wondered if anyone on the board knows of a group or society based in the leeds/wakefield area that i might be able to hook up with?

I'm not against the idea of starting such a group myself, i just lack the experience, so any tips/pointers on this sort of area would be greatly appreciated

Over the past ten years Ive been on many a ghost investigation by myself with friends and also with groups that you have to pay to go to do an investigation. Most enjoyable one was my very first one were alot of unusal stuff happened (1st investigation I was very nervous and felt unable to question what happened has it was happening to a researcher who as he said had been doing this for 40years so was very knowledgeable.) I know better now. On the investigations I always try to go with a open mind but I always question everything that happens and try to weigh up the people that things happen to. over the last few years on the paying investigations there has been more and more use of ouji boards and the like (more most haunted). And alot of the people are very exciteable on the vigils screaming and jumping saying they can feel things or see them that fine by me they have paid their money for the night but I like to just look around and investigate the place see if can see any thing that can explain the strange noise or movement. Afew times Ive been taken to one side by the ones leading the event saying that because Im not joining in that is why no one is seeing anything because the ghosts are not happy with me not joining in. So I started to go around saying that I felt a strange cold feeling (I knew I was standing in a draft) others came over said they could feel it as well even that it was evil and didnt want us there. Next I said I saw something move in the other room ( never saw a thing) 3 others said they saw it aswell. Not a single person questioned what I had seen not even going to check the area out. I know that maybe I shouldnt bother going on these paying investigations but if I didnt I wouldnt get to most of these said haunted places. Besides I usually try to way the group up that im with and if they want scares and chills I do my best to help.

Thats the important bit. Don't let yourself be led by those around you.

Make your own mind up given the facts before you and Fort will smile down on you. ;)
 
I think what the OP was really getting at was the post MH commercialisation of ghost hunting.

He points out exactly the kind of things that put me off attending such gatherings.

They don't want sceptics, they want gullible numpties. :roll:

Yes, I understood that. I was trying to advise the OP how to approach these situations in a Fortean style.
 
Eye witness testimony is practically worthless anyway. You sound like a rational person who knows what's shit and what's not. Good one. It would be a good idea to secretly video these events and put them on the net after a while. ;)

The best way to approach the subject of 'paid investigations' is to avoid them like the plague. Most of these concerns these days seem to be run by failed paranormal groups / enthusiasts (of the 'Most Haunted' persuasion) who have been running 10 minutes and can't find independent investigations of their own (and so get into utterly worthless, trendy, allegedly haunted places / situations by charging other people to go in with them).

Ghost Hunt in Huntingdon

Falls into the paid investigatigation category I suppose. I'd have done this, but they were charging 50 quid a time (for charidee), to participate, so they were bound to find ghosties....
(You did get breakfast at the George Hotel [which once belonged to Oliver Cromwell's granddad] but it was still a bit pricey)

PARANORMAL investigators claim to have found evidence of supernatural activity during a charity ghost hunt at Huntingdon Town Hall on Saturday evening.

A photograph taken in the mayor’s parlour is said to show an orb, which is believed by some people to be the early manifestation of a ghost. The small pink circle was captured on camera by a team of ghost hunters from Cambridgeshire Ghost Research.

James Edwards, paranormal investigator said: “We caught a few light anomalies on camera. Some turned out to be specks of dust on the lens but one was of particular interest.

“The pink orb was unusual because of its colour and brightness. It also has a small motion trail behind it showing clear movement.

He added: “The town hall is an interesting building and there is definitely an atmosphere. We would be keen to return to carry out further investigations.”

The ghost hunt was organised by town mayor Councillor Chris Doyle and raised £200 to be split between SSAFA Forces Help and The Gabriel Newton Educational Foundation.

A small group of volunteers joined ghost investigators using night-vision cameras, motion sensors and voice recorders to search for supernatural activity. The evening did not disappoint with a number of spine-tingling incidents reported.

Describing the night’s highlights, Mr Edwards said a black shape was reportedly seen on three occasions by three different people and at one point it appeared to pass through a wall.

One member of the public also reportedly ran from the building after hearing footsteps and feeling the ground move as if someone was running towards him.

Another ghostly occurrence involved one of the volunteers experiencing a temperature drop while standing in the dock in court one. “He said it felt as though an air-conditioning unit had suddenly been switched on,” said Mr Edwards. “We carried out a temperature reading and found it to be 18.6oC where he was standing and 21.2oC a few feet away.”

Cllr Doyle described the evening as a great success and said people really got into the “spirit of it” with two brave volunteers sleeping overnight in the cells.

He said: “It was brilliant fun and very exciting. One or two people let their imagination run wild but I did see an out-of-the-ordinary looking black swirling shadow, which I could not explain.

“The building certainty has a chill to it but I wasn’t scared.”

I recently invited a group of ghost hunters to my grandmother’s house because, as kids, my brother and I would wake up there feeling like someone was watching us. It’s not hard to find a ghost-hunting society — there are tens for every state. I picked through Cape Cod Paranormal, Essex County Ghost Project, Boston Paranormal Investigators, Cranberry Coast Paranormal, and finally landed on the Investigators of the Unknown, out of Fall River. When I called to ask when they were available, Jeremiah, the team leader, said he and his crew could meet me before dark. No charge.

My grandmother’s house is a 1740s country house, tall and whitewashed, at the end of a long dirt driveway and in the middle of acres of farmland streaked with tumbledown stonewalls. Everyone has a ghost story about it. There’s the one my mom tells, about when she was a girl and woke to a man in a stovepipe hat and black greatcoat standing in the corner of her bedroom. My uncle saw that same man standing in the living room. One of my aunts, home from college back in the 1970s, alone in the house and studying in her bedroom, heard a crash downstairs. She ran to the first-floor bathroom, thinking her friends were playing tricks on her, to see the mirror cabinet thrown open and pill bottles rolling on the bathroom floor. She said she walked out the front door and drove back to Boston without her books. I remember a houseguest asking my mom who the man standing in the bathroom window was, the one who looked like Abe Lincoln. Another houseguest saw an old woman sitting in the rocking chair in the bedroom where my brother and I slept. The stories go on and on.

Old thread, but I wasn't the one to resurrect it. Anyway, I don't think there is anything wrong with paid for ghost hunts, and this is me the sceptic talking, although I am a lot less sceptical since having been on two. Warwick castle was my local when I was growing up.

Spent many a teenage night investigating spirits on our own late-night visits, thanks to the infamous 'holes in the fence' every Warwickian kid knows at least one of.

Not just spirits either. Cider too.

I wholeheartedly recommend Kenilworth castle for a proper scary late night trip. The only time I've been properly frightened, pure terror out of nowhere. I was driving that night too, completely clear-headed.
 
I totally understand why people attend these paid-for events; it's laid on a plate. You get access to supposedly haunted or "active" locations. You often get access to equipment that you might not have your self (ouija boards, electronic equpiment, IR/UV cameras etc).

But personally I think it's unecessary. There are tons of locations where you can go and camp and spend the night messing around with all sorts of stuff and it cost pittance. I started camping in paranormal locations back in 2007 with a close friend. We've had tons of fun and even started a website to promote the idea...

I personally never went for ghost hunting but many of my friends go and they tell me very weird stories which i get scared listening to.

Stop getting scared when they tell you the stories. The stories will probably dry up. They probably spend whole nights sitting in supposedly haunted houses making up stories to scare Lena with.

And what a boring place the World would be if all the scary stories dried up and we discovered that God was just a plate of spaghetti, without even a nice chianti to wash it down.
 
I used to work in hospitals and care homes and was constantly told about ghosts on the premises. Most of the stories are on here somewhere.

Whenever possible I'd try to find little jobs to do on my own in the hauntedest areas, hoping to see something weird for myself. I s'pose you could call that ghosthunting! :D

Didn't get me anywhere, even when, at one place, the regular staff frightened each other so much with their scary stories that they refused to take an elderly resident up to her top floor bedroom in the lift, and I had to put her to bed myself, illegally using a patient hoist unassisted.

Wussies. :evil:

I did have strange things happen around me but never when I was actively looking for them, and they seemed very natural at the time and weren't scary.

Spaghetti and meatballs and eyes on stalks. Chianti is optional. But okay, a good ghost story can be fun.

As HP Lovecraft and Terry Pratchett have warned, such an entity may be a sneaky attempt by one of the denizens of the Dungeon Dimensions to manifest itself on this plane in this reality.

I have recently paid to go on two paid ghost hunts,yes its pricey but i hope it will be worth it just for the locations, i am not planning joining in with the most haunted brigade, who are there just to scare themselves but just to sit quietly somewhere and see what happens.

I have bought myself a cheapish night vision scope but does anybody have any other ideas of what i should take and any tips in general?
 
Take plenty of mosquito repellent. Or, as the Special Forces swear by it, Skin-So-Soft dry oil body spray. :)
And take some bottled water.
And (the obvious) a good video camera with infra-red capability.
 
Oil body spray? ... I don't think he's talking about that kind of night out :)

@ escargot1 ... I used to work on a supposed haunted hospital ward to. I never saw anything weird except out of the corner of my eye during night shifts which everyone experiences if they're tired. One side room had patients often asking who the sweet little girl was that came to see them at night and were worried where her parents were which was a bit creepy. Some of the HCA's thought she must be an angel because the patients that saw her usually died. The building had been a TB centre decades earlier. Some of the nurses used to say "shh ... you'll wake up the baby!" if the patient was shouting out in the night which always worked so maybe it was an implanted vision they were experiencing?.

At first glance everything appears normal in the typical Coldside home I was invited to visit.
However, on closer inspection, nothing could be further from the truth – not least as I watched specialised ghost busters “communicating” with the dead.
There was, according to the paranormal experts, an eerie presence in the corner of one of the rooms.
Apparently it was a “dark, looming” man hovering over the shoulder of the medium who had been drafted in to help transport him back to “the other side”.

And there was also a teenage spirit in the bedroom, who claimed to be good and religious, but had become trapped in the land of the living.
As well as the medium on hand to clear the house of the dispirited spirits, there was also the commanding presence of paranormal investigator Isaac Stewart, crucifix at the ready.
Isaac, from Kirriemuir, was asked to the house by the occupiers desperate to clear their home of ghosts in the hopes of resuming a “normal” family life.
