Global Warming & Climate Change: Humans' Reactions & Responses

56 hungry polar bears 'invade Russian village', says WWF

Date: 7 December, 2019

WWF-Russia has blamed climate change for the "massive gathering" of polar bears searching for food on land.

A village in Russia has been "invaded" by more than 50 hungry polar bears forced to hunt for food on land due to melting sea ice, the WWF has said.

Ryrkaypiy, on the Kozhevnikov Cape in the remote Chukotka area, is being monitored by a patrol team, with special buses organised to take children to and from school and nursery.

Skinny and starving? l don’t think so.

“BARENTS SEA BEARS ARE THRIVING

According to recent research results, despite low ice cover since 2016, the population of polar bears around Svalbard and presumably in the Barents Sea as a whole are still increasing, as they recover from decades of over-hunting in the 19th and 20th centuries (Aars 2018; Aars et al. 2009, 2017; Crockford 2017).
This incident of winter problems with polar bears and others like it reported from the Russian Arctic, almost certainly reflect the confluence of a growing human presence in the Arctic and thriving polar bear populations, not lack of sea ice due to global warming.”

Bears are just doing what foxes are increasingly doing in the UK: exploiting an easy food source:

It is easier to blame global warming for the actual world going on actual fire, I suppose, but there are already changes happening, and they won't all be apocalyptic.

Glacier National Park Quietly Removes Its "Gone By 2020" Signs

May 30, 2019. St. Mary, Montana

Officials at Glacier National Park (GNP) have begun quietly removing and altering signs and government literature which told visitors that the Park’s glaciers were all expected to disappear by...2020

2019-06-10_8-53-40.jpg

The centerpiece of the visitor center at St. Mary near the east boundary is a large three-dimensional diorama showing lights going out as the glaciers disappear. Visitors press a button to see the diorama lit up like a Christmas tree in 1850, then showing fewer and fewer lights until the diorama goes completely dark. As recently as September 2018 the diorama displayed a sign saying GNP’s glaciers were expected to disappear completely by 2020.

But at some point during this past winter (as the visitor center was closed to the public), workers replaced the diorama’s ‘gone by 2020’ engraving with a new sign indicating the glaciers will disappear in “future generations.”

2019-06-10_8-54-51.jpg

The ‘gone by 2020’ claims were repeated in the New York Times, National Geographic, and other international news sources. But no mainstream news outlet has done any meaningful reporting regarding the apparent stabilization and recovery of the glaciers in GNP over the past decade. Even local Montana news sources such as The Missoulian, Billings Gazette and Bozeman Daily Chronicle have remained utterly silent regarding this story.

Summary: In February 2004, headlines in The Guardian and other news media told us of a secret DoD report predicting a climate catastrophe by 2020:

"Climate change over the next 20 years could result in a global catastrophe costing millions of lives in wars and natural disasters.

A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020.

The document predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies."

The October 2003 Schwartz & Randall report can be downloaded (PDF) at:

https://eesc.columbia.edu/courses/v1003/readings/Pentagon.pdf

Or you can get it directly from DoD's Defense Technical Information Center (where it's apparently been available all along with no indication it was ever classified):

https://apps.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a469325.pdf

It's a scenario description based on a worst-case scenario involving a sudden collapse analogous to a previous (pre-)historical event and a focus on the (mainly Atlantic) ocean conveyor issues which were becoming more popular at the time.

Bad PR move by Amazon. If this was Google or Twitter they would welcome the move by their employees and promise to make (totally cosmetic) changes.

A group of Amazon employees has said the company has threatened to fire some of them for speaking out on environmental issues.

Amazon Employees for Climate Justice said the workers were told they were in violation of company policies. It comes after employees joined calls for the e-commerce giant to do more to tackle climate change. The company said its policy on employees making public comments is not new and covers all of its workers.

In a Twitter post, the group said some employees had been contacted by Amazon's legal and human resources teams and questioned about public comments they had made. The statement went on to say: "Some workers then received follow-up emails threatening termination if they continue to speak about Amazon's business."

The "Amazon doesn't care about the Amazon" headlines write themselves.

Siberian climate? We didn't even get a White Christmas.

The findings will prove humiliating to the Bush administration, which has repeatedly denied that climate change even exists.

Yep, the "findings" certainly are humiliating...

We rarely get a white Christmas. We haven't had a white anything so far. (Touch wood. Painfully aware there's still time for me to be working in the snow this year.)

Climate science has moved on, of course. Because science does.

Extinction Rebellion founder Roger Hallam calls for Nuremberg-style trials for people responsible for climate change

The founder of Extinction Rebellion wants those responsible for climate change to face Nuremberg-style trials.

Roger Hallam also called for a ‘World War Two mobilisation’ of society, with rationing and the confiscation of private property.

Asked how those responsible for climate change should be dealt with, he told The Times: ‘The question will be who’s culpable, in the same way [as] with the Nazis.

He added that ‘maybe [we] should put a bullet in the head’ as punishment."

His remarks come days after Counter Terrorism Policing South East apologised for including Extinction Rebellion in a guide of dangerous groups.

Oh dear. That means that all of us will be rounded up and shot. Also, the members of Extinction Rebellion will all have to commit suicide.

As much as I don't take anything the Daily Mail says seriously, I somehow do believe there really are people who think like this.
They are dangerous indeed.

Perhaps they ought to realise that the climate is an ever-changing thing that has been happening for much longer than us humans have walked the planet, and will continue to happen for long after we are no longer here. And that they should start learning how to live with the changes instead of running around screaming that the sky is falling and looking for someone to blame, which doesn't solve anything.

Think of a primitive human, thousands of years ago. He constructs a nice little hut beside the sea because he likes the sea (who doesn't). He quickly realises that the water periodically comes in and floods his house; so the logical thing to do, which he does, is to rebuild it further inland or uphill.

But the mindset nowadays seems to be akin to trying to stop the tide from coming in, instead.

Thanks!

I Tweeted the story to Irish Farmers organisations saying that if the Greens get into government they'll use anti-terror legislation against farmers. For the duration of the Irish GE campaign I'm the Farmers Friend.

Exactly! And whilst humanity has an effect upon the climate, I seriously-question whether it has the dominant factor in such equations.

As I have said here before: we were definitively informed in the 1980s that one single eruption of gases from the active Mount St Helens volcano in Washington State releases more carbon compounds into the atmosphere than the entire back-catalogue of humanity's internal combustion engines.

Nobody amongst Climate Change Activists EVER mentions sunspot activity cycles, and solar coronae (aspects of physical reality that I am much-more aware of, in part, because of their actual & potential effects upon telecommunications and electronic systems).

I may not have that much longer left in this world: but maybe I'm going to be a bit more vocal regarding the hand-wringing ideologically-correct confirmation-biased selectively-omissive nonsense that is being peddled as unassailable fact, when it comes to anthropogenic global warming. There are some highly-hypocritical agendas being played-out, in this international arena....seriously. And lots of complex commercial and societal motives.

..hand-wringing ideologically-correct confirmation-biased selectively-omissive nonsense that is being peddled as unassailable fact..

You'll never get all that on a T shirt.

The co-founder of climate alarmist group Extinction Rebellion (XR), called for activists to “take down” civilisation as a remedy for supposedly man-made climate change.

Speaking at a ‘By Any Means Necessary?’ meeting Simon Bramwell, the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, advocated for humanity to return to a “wild” and “feral” state, saying that it is the duty of activist groups like XR is to “sabotage” civilisation, in order to bring about his Paleolithic utopian vision:

"And it is part of our duty in my opinion that we’ve also got to not only take down civilisation but shepherd ourselves and incoming generations back into a state of wilding as it were, into like a feral consciousness..."

Extremists.
7 billion people can't simply go back to a hunter-gatherer existence. Many millions - perhaps billions - of humans would die of starvation and many more animals would be wiped out.

Yes.

I have many Green friends. They are all good people but some are politically...worrying.

And others have actually lived in the wilds like a primitive.

Its not a nice place to be, even if you can get food. (That is difficult, but one good thing; no room in nature for vegans and lactos and faddy eaters. They will die first).
