Global Warming & Climate Change: The Phenomenon

How does a region that is nearly 500 miles from the Gulf become devastated by flooding?

The National Climatic Data Center is a federal office that maintains the world's largest climate data archive and provides historical perspective to put present-day weather conditions and natural disasters into context in a warming world due to climate change.

Unfortunately, the National Climatic Data Center is based in Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville, a city in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, is the epicenter of catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Helene that has played out over the last week. The climate data facility is inoperable because water and electricity services in the region have entirely broken down due to flooding.

A flood of complaints will surely follow!:)

The hurricane that hit the lower Appalachian Mountains especially North Carolina is being called end of days biblical.

Small villages no longer exist and a known 100 people dead and thousands not heard from, maybe from communications being destroyed.

People in this area on the TV saying no home, no food, no water, no banks, no electricity, no roads, no cars, no electricity.

Seems like help is, and will be on it's way. . .

U.S. Weather Service—it can’t be possible, Gulf of Mexico hurricane name Milton went from a Cat 1 to a Cat 5 in 24 hours.

This is not possible on planet earth.

Florida’s Walt Disney World could be destroyed.

Hit a warmer air pocket apparently, which quickly increased it's force.

Of course it's possible. It's physics and it was predicted to intensify.

From NYTimes: Its small size, an excess of extremely warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico and calm atmospheric conditions allowed Milton to “explosively” intensify, as hurricane center forecasters noted Monday afternoon.

The standard meteorological definition of “rapid intensification” is 30 knots in 24 hours, or roughly 35 miles per hour daily. Milton increased by more than double this definition on Monday, at a pace similar to that of Wilma and another record storm, Hurricane Felix in 2007.

However, Tuesday AM (today as I write this), it's back down to a Cat 4. Still, people seem to be evacuating. It's causing major traffic jams because there is one big interstate highway out of Florida.

I will not be sad if Disney world is destroyed. They have been talking about leaving Florida anyway.

Does this signal the death knell for feral Haggis?

Scotland is completely snow-free for the fourth time in the last six years.

The Sphinx, in the Cairngorms, which is historically the longest-lasting patch of snow in the UK, has melted. Snow expert Iain Cameron reported on Friday that the famous patch had disappeared in the last 24 hours. It is the fourth time it has gone in the last six years, having only melted nine times in the past 300 years. Mr Cameron said climate change was a likely factor.

The Sphinx, on remote Braeriach, a 1,296m (4,252ft) Munro, has melted away more frequently in the last 18 years. According to records, it previously melted fully in 1933, 1959, 1996, 2003, 2006, 2017, 2018, 2021 and now 2022. Before 1933, it is thought to have last melted completely in the 1700s.

Sphinx snow patch melts again.

My pilgrimage to the vanishing Sphinx snow patch

The Sphinx, a patch of snow believed to be the longest-lasting in the UK, has melted for the fourth consecutive year.

Iain Cameron has spent decades surveying the patch, hidden in one of the most isolated parts of Scotland's Cairngorms. Describing his work as “citizen science", Iain and other experts document areas of snow across the country and share their findings with the Royal Meteorological Society.

The patch was thought to be a permanent fixture in the Scottish landscape - researchers attribute its recent melting to the effects of climate change.

A snow patch is a permanent or long-lasting area of snow, unlike seasonal snow cover that will melt during warm weather.

The mayor of Tampa, Florida warns the 3 million residents, “ if you stay and not evacuate, you will die”.

Hurricane Milton seems to be becoming a “ monster “ in strength again.

There was talk about 200 mph winds. That's a non-survivable event, so Floridians just have to get out of there.

Just looking at the BBC report from Tampa.
A couple of things;

Firstly, the 84 mph wind at 21.00 is classed as a violent storm, yet the other at 01.00 a hurricane.

Also, while 90 mph is classed as a hurricane, 92 mph is classed as a violent storm.

This last Florida hurricane cause an unexpected problem.

Florida’s 1.3 million alligators have been stirred up turning up in swimming pools, house bedrooms, house garages, and walking down sidewalks and streets.

Storm winds are straight line, while tornado (and likely hurricane) are rotating. At least that's the difference where I live in the US.
