Great Acts Of Stupidity

Here's hoping they 're-educated' him.

Hopefully with with pictures of people killed by trains!.

But, the shit will say something like "you can't show me them, as...blah blah blah et cetera" and then have the fucking cheek too then ask for an obscene amount of cash running into almost millions, cos he was upset (and he'll get the fucking money, no doubt!). :incan::pitch:

Sorry about that, but twats like this really piss me off.

Trowbridge. What more explanation do you need.

Nah well you get riffraff everywhere, of course. But you wouldn't be surprised if it was in Trowbridge, put it that way :)

This is something of a two-part 'WTF?' item ...

Part 1:

Iowa teen hospitalized with fractured skull after attempting viral Kiki Challenge
An 18-year-old girl from Iowa wound up in intensive care after she tried and failed a viral dance move.

Anna Worden told news station WQAD that she and her friends decided to try the Kiki Challenge, which involves jumping out of a moving car while dancing to Drake’s “In My Feelings.”

What is the newest dance craze to Drake's "In My Feelings?" »

"I tried, and the last thing I remember was opening the door. So apparently I got out and I tripped and fell and hit my head," Worden told the station.

She was airlifted to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a fractured skull, blood clots in her ear and bleeding in her brain.

Worden, who said she had been dancing since she was 3 years old, now has to relearn how to walk. ...

Part 2:

The summary teaser for this story (on the AOL landing page) qualifies for the Piss-Poor Proofreading thread as well, though it's arguably apropos given Ms. Worden's new challenge of learning to walk, much less dance, again:

Teen fractures skill after trying viral challenge
(Emphasis added)

I wonder if it's connected to the first scene in the recent film Lady Bird, where the main character jumps out of a moving car to win an argument with her mother? (She breaks her arm in the story).

I bet it's just something from the music video.

I hear and understand your anger but, to spoil a good story with facts: no. I worked in claims for 35 years dealing amongst other things with motor liability, public liability, employer's lability and other categories of claim that involved someone trying to get compensation following an incident. I also spent 10 years specialising in investigating suspected fraudulent or exaggerated claims, and 2 or 3 years specialising in dealing with complaints in a claims department.

Yes, people sometimes try to make false or exaggerated claims and, yes, occasionally, they ask for obscene amounts. However, under the English legal system, if this guy were to try to claim for trauma in the circumstances you've described then (a) he would be unlikely to succeed at all (unless BTP did something absolutely disproportionate and unreasonable) and (b) in the unlikely event that he succeeded, he would get a very modest amount indeed.

In order to get what is often called "no win no fee" (in reality, the fees are insured against the possibility of losing the case) his solicitors would need to convince a specialist insurer that the claim had a good chance of succeeding. Without that, he would be risking more in costs than he would be likely to win.

There is scope for a whole Fortean thread here of "urban legends" about stupid claims stories. All or most of the ones you've heard (the guy who put his Winnebago on cruise control and went through to the back to make coffee; the person who spilled hot coffee on her lap and sued a well known burger chain because it was hot; the person who found green vegetable matter in his can of pea soup; etc.) are either apocryphal, or, if a real claim was made, were unsuccessful.

Back to the guy who let his kid look over the edge of the platform: yes, stupid, irresponsible, and poor parenting, but probably no worse than the thousand other parents who failed to supervise their kids crossing busy roads on the same day. When I was 10 or 12 my brother and I used to play on railway lines and see how close we could get to the moving trains. We were stupid kids and it could have gone badly wrong, but here I am alive tod...

Not sure if this should go here or weird sex...

Man rushed to hospital after stuffing 15 hard-boiled eggs up his bottom while high on drugs

The 29-year-old man boiled the eggs with his partner, before peeling them and putting them up his bottom

The 29-year-old man from the Netherlands, who has not been identified, was under the influence of GHB, a common date rape drug, when he started boiling the eggs with his partner.

When the were cooked he peeled them and decided to put them into his bottom, according to the Dutch Magazine for Healthcare.

He started getting stomach pains later that night and went straight to hospital

Doctors carried out a CT scan as they suspected abdominal sepsis , and found a perforation of the pelvic colon and a huge amount of air and fluids in his abdominal cavity.

They decided it would be necessary to do an emergency laparotomy, a surgical procedure involving a large incision through the abdominal wall to gain access into the abdominal cavity.

The doctor said: "The eggs were removed as well as we could and the abdominal cavity was thoroughly rinsed."

The eggs caused a giant rapture of the gastrointestinal wall, which was sewn up by the doctors.

The doctor said: "After the operation, the patient was monitored in intensive care for a short time.

"After several days he could leave the hospital in a clinically good condition."

Which of them was the stupid one?

I'd like a bit more detail than the Indie manages, but it's fair to say that using a large anti-tank shell as a doorstop is not recommended. Police in Kingston upon Thames used admirable restraint: 'Some of you may have noticed part of Ewell Road cordoned off yesterday. To avoid further inconvenience, if you happen to find an Anti-Tank missile, please don't use it as a door-stop.'

The comments in that link are quite good:

"It's still OK to use them for panel-beating though, right?"

Reminds me of an old friend who owned an inactive shell similar to this one that he used to keep in a caravan I'd sold him .. problems arose when he had a visit from the police about something unrelated and they spotted it ..

The field his caravan was parked in (on its own) was opposite Whittington (army) Barracks near Tamworth so the bomb disposal crew were called out despite his protests that it wasn't live and they were about to blow it up before they worked out he was telling the truth.

This thread seems a good place for this cautionary news item, because a number of examples are to be found here. Other FTMB areas illustrating the problem include the Strange Deaths and Silly Mistakes threads.

Selfie deaths: 259 people reported dead seeking the perfect picture
The quest for extreme selfies killed 259 people between 2011 and 2017, a 2018 global study has revealed.

Researchers at the US National Library of Medicine recommend that 'no selfie zones' should be introduced at dangerous spots to reduce deaths.

These would include the tops of mountains, tall buildings and lakes, where many of the deaths occurred.

Drowning, transport accidents and falling were found to be the most common cause of death.

But death by animals, electrocution, fire and firearms also appeared frequently in reports from around the world.

In July this year, 19-year-old Gavin Zimmerman fell to his death while taking selfies on a cliff in New South Wales, Australia. ...

Tomer Frankfurter died in California's Yosemite National Park in September after falling 250 metres while trying to take a selfie.

News reports like this were analysed to compile the study.

They found that selfie-related deaths are most common in India, Russia, the United States and Pakistan and 72.5% of those reported are men.

Previous studies were compiled from Wikipedia pages and Twitter, which researchers say did not give accurate results.

The new study also showed that the number of deaths is on the rise.

There were only three reports of selfie-related deaths in 2011, but that number grew to 98 in 2016 and 93 in 2017.

However, the researchers claim that the actual number of selfie deaths could be much higher because they are never named as the cause of death.

"It is believed that selfie deaths are underreported and the true problem needs to be addressed," it says.

"Certain road accidents while posing for selfies are reported as death due to Road Traffic Accident.

"Thus, the true magnitude of the problem is underestimated. It is therefore important to assess the true burden, causes, and reasons for selfie deaths so that appropriate interventions can be made."

9gag never fails to surprise. Tragic caption (if it's true):

“Surveillance footage from the apartment building in an unnamed Chinese city shows the two men waiting together for an elevator. While waiting for the lift to arrive, the son-in-law apparently got impatient. Rather than taking the stairs, he decided instead to use a key to unlock the elevator doors to have a look inside the shaft.

After he did so, the father-in-law walks into the shaft, apparently believing that the lift had finally arrived. Instead, he fell 8 meters to his death.”

Dumb and dumber:

Young man: Even though I'm not an elevator engineer and don't have any tools on me even if I was, opening the door seems like a good idea!

Old man: Ah! .. the door's opened. There's no lights on in the elevator indicating there's a fault somewhere but I'll just walk in anyway!.

I wonder if it's connected to the first scene in the recent film Lady Bird, where the main character jumps out of a moving car to win an argument with her mother? (She breaks her arm in the story).

Winning an argument with evidence of stupidity - seen that. The ex and I were once discussing motorcycle safety. At the time you could ride any motorbike up to 250cc on a Learner licence.

The ex said this was dangerous because some people would buy a 250cc without any experience of smaller bikes. I said naaah, people get into motorbikes through mopeds and 125cc bikes, they don't do that.

Aha, said the ex, my brother did EXACTLY that!

At 17, Ex's brother bought a brand new 250cc Yamaha or Suzuki or whatever and rode it straight home from the salesroom without ever having owned a motorbike before, or even, if Ex was to be believed, having tried one.

So the ex won an argument with his own wife by proving that his own brother was an idiot. Class.

When I was at Uni i had a friend who's brother bought a 600cc (or something) motorbike, and crashed into a tree on his licence test.

Broke his back and was in traction for six months, a wheelchair for a year, and crutches for another six months.
