Great Acts Of Stupidity

The victim had complained to the police about alleged thefts from his home but wasn't taken seriously, so he rigged up traps with guns and possibly bombs. He is said to have suffered from dementia so perhaps he forgot he'd installed them.

According to the latest FT, Danes have tried to make $500 MILLION from fake accident claims, and to back them up many are going as far as injuring themselves. This includes cutting off fingers and hands, and in one case a man had his leg amputated after sticking it in front of an oncoming train. That they are turned down when they are rumbled means they have disabled themselves for nothing.

Unfortunately (though not as unfortunate as needlessly chopping your hand off), Google has been zero help in tracking anything about this online. Anyone know any more?

There was one man who did several of those things. He had insured himself at several insurance companies.
The company Tryg who is a big insurance company are spending more on insurance fraud investigation, saying 10%, which is 400 million pounds, might be paid out for what is actual fraud. Bodily harm seems uncommon though.

Was just reading about that case from 2017 - man insured himself with 17 different companies then "accidentally" chopped off his little finger. He was found out.

Thanks, @Shady - I guess the Times one didn't show up on a search because it's behind a paywall. That was the one FT referenced. Still can't read it, though!

Teacher fired for smoking pot in class, school officials say

A substitute teacher at a Massachusetts high school has been fired for smoking marijuana in class and leading a discussion about the drug, the school’s principal said.

The teacher was fired Monday from North Attleborough High School after students reported the incident to officials, according to a statement from Principal Peter Haviland. The principal praised students for showing maturity and courage during an experience that he called “unfortunate and unprecedented.”

“It was their quick decisions to report the concerns which allowed our school to immediately intervene and remove the individual who created the unsafe environment,” Haviland said.

The teacher, whose name has not been released, has been barred from the school. It was not immediately clear if criminal charges will be filed. ...

I can personally assure you that this is not the case. ;)

You're right though, it is very serious indeed.

Yet another 9gag. Drunk man talks to mirror reflection. The comments are nice too:
https://9gag.com/gag/ae5VnAb

I once argued with a plant. In front of my fiancee, her sister and her boyfriend. Don't over do it

I once got so drunk I forgot how to take my pants off and just pissed all over them instead. One time I was tripping balls so hard, I kept rereading the frozen pizza instructions and couldn't comprehend the words

Not drunk, but did a lot of salvia when I was younger. We always did it in this little hobby house my mate had, and everytime I would smoke up, I'd go looking for stars outside. This time however my buddy went outside for a piss.. I thought. Turns out I was "talking" to one of those little angel-springs that piss, apparently didn't freak me out that my mate had shrunk a whole lot. Also very hard to talk on salvia, so I was probably just mumbling and laughing.

Once i came back drunk home going straight away to the toilet and said "Hello mom" to the fridge in the kitchen. Then i look back again to the kitchen and realized what i just did.

In the UK at one time you could access information on teachers who had been suspended and the reasons for their suspension. I was astonished that teachers who had been found taking drugs, having porn on their workplace computers, convicted of assault and similar offences were simply given a term of suspension lasting a couple of months or so.

I think this, irrespective of the ignorance involved, ranks up there...

Man who threw 'lucky' coins into plane engine fined
A Chinese man who was flying for the first time, has been fined for throwing "good luck" coins into plane's engine

We have a thread dedicated to that little bit of superstitious insanity ...

I don't know if it;s relevant here but in suspensions from lecturing, the sentence of the institution depends on the perp meeting conditions - medical treatment, for example - and I don't know if such conditions would be included in the stuff which was available?

A Canadian man who announced he was infected with the new coronavirus during a WestJet flight from Toronto to Jamaica on Monday says he was trying to make a viral video, according to a new report from Canada’s Global News. The plane turned around after the man, identified as 28-year-old James Potok, stood up and told other passengers that he was sick. Potok was evaluated and eventually arrested after the plane landed.

(Guess he'll be on a few no-fly lists now)
