Greeting Rooms

I was just talking to someone who said she greets her house every time she gets home by knocking twice on the door, 'to alert whoever is guarding the place' that she's coming in. This reminds me of my ex, who would always knock on a hotel room door before entering, for similar reasons. Both these people are Hong Kong Chinese, but is this superstition practiced elsewhere?

I'm not Chinese, but I do knock on doors before entering the room, though only if I think or know someone is already in there. I wouldn't knock on the door of an empty room if I knew it was empty. Nothing to do with spirits, just courtesy to potentially give the person time to answer me when I ask them what exactly it is they think they're doing.
