So the Krishnas are a group of Hindus founded in the 1960s by swami prabupada. Their main deity is Krishna, the entirety of the universe. Krishna manifested on earth in the body of a human prince with blue skin. The cow herder girls in the village vrindaban loved him because he was the embodiment of the universe. He played flute and danced naked with them in the river and had orgies. The Hare Krishnas view the cow as the most sacred and spiritually advanced animal after humans. It seems pretty clear to me that Krishna is a metaphor for psilocybin mushrooms. The mushrooms grow in cow dung, bruise blue when you touch them, often lead to orgies or at least dancing naked in a river, and at higher doses can let you experience oneness with the universe. The funny thing is, the Hare Krishnas became popular in America during the peak of the psychedelic revolution. Prabupada prohibited his disciples from using psychedelics including mushrooms. He also prohibited sex unless it was for the sole purpose of procreation. They appear to lead a very strict lifestyle much different from the one they read about. It seems very strange, but appearances can be deceiving, perhaps some of the eat the mushrooms that grow on their cow farms. I've heard some very psychedelic music in certain Krishna temples

I think classical Indian music tends to sound rather psychedelic to our Western ears simply because sitars and Indian scales were often used by psychedelic bands during the acid rock era. George Harrison started all that mullarkey.

Here you go Greylien, lets see some foot tapping from you :)

No sitars on that though.

Didnt he the look the man, no doubt a leading light in his hey day.

I don't know if they do mushrooms but there's an island full of them on Inis Rath. Hardly ever see them in Dublin anymore, Vid at link.

The Hare Krishna religion is a branch of Hinduism closely associated with India, where it has one of its largest followings.

The religion's profile increased in the 1970s when The Beatles' George Harrison developed an interest in Indian spirituality.

Now a Hare Krishna community that calls a remote Irish island its home is beginning to grow.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness have had members on Inish Rath in County Fermanagh since 1986.

But a new generation of people from the Indian community based in Belfast have been discovering what locals call “Krishna Island”, for the first time.

Some of the above is utter rubbish and sorry to sound rude.

I was a Hare Krsna and lived in the London Soho Street temple for 12 years from the late 70's to around 1990. There is no naked dancing, no orgies and no being one with the universe and no drugs, psychedelic or otherwise.

The religion spans time and was first written down 5 000 years ago and are known as the Vedas. Hinduism came later and the term Hinduism came from the Mongols when they invaded India. They never crossed a river called the Sindhu and as there was no 's' in Mongolian they used the nearest sounding letter in their language which was the letter 'h' and so the Indians who lived on the other side os the river became referred to as Hindus. The term then stuck.

Hindus as they are now known used to follow the teachings of the Vedas and used to be known as Vendantas or Vendantists from Vendanta which means to do with the Vedas. Veda means knowledge. Now though Hinduism is part based loosely on scripture and partly concocted. For instance, Hindus should not eat meat, fish or eggs and definitely not sell it either. Ganesh does not make people rich. Ganesh when worshiped properly gives wealth in the form of spiritual knowledge and removes obstacles on the path of self realisation.

Swami Prabhupada came to America aged 69 in the 60's on the order of his spiritual master, an order given to him many years beforehand. The order was for Swami Prabhupada to spread Krsna consciousness to the west and to preach the original meaning and purposes of the Vedas. The rest is history.

The Hare Krsna's accept Krsna as the supreme personality of Godhead which is supported in all Vedic literature.

Class reply. I've learned quite a lot from listening to lectures by Alan Watt. The one on Dreams is most enjoyable and enlightening. The thing I find almost funny is that Vedanta predates modern scientific physics by many thousands of years, and yet there's so much of it in Vedanta. John Dobson spent many years in India studying Veda and insisted to the end of his life that the physicists need to take the Veda more seriously, and Vedantans need to take physicists more seriously. That's not a popular opinion on either side of the divide. I like it.

Watch both of these. I'm confident that you will be very glad you did.

That is one line worthy of discussion.

What is fungi? It's about the closest physical evidence we have for alien life on earth. It behaves so very very weirdly compared to ... about everything else organic. It might be a mass sentient organism for all we know.

What's your opinion on the drink Soma? Do you think it could have been psychoactive? I know a lot of nonsense has been written about it in the past, like it could possibly have been the Amanita muscaria mushroom.

I will answer this but not now. It requires a well thought out answer because it's not as simple a question as it may seem and yes, most of what is written about soma rasa/juice is pure rubbish and some, like the wikipedia entry have bits of accurate information along with other 'stuff'.
