That's because they don't fledge until they're almost as big as an adult. You can recognize them though because they don't have the iridescent neck feathers at first. This one was just showing the first signs.

Anyway, aside from the humorous point I was making about some books/birds/cars seeming to have been created "old", this thread has become an itch that I want to scratch. I find myself googling random combinations of "encounters", "spirits ", "nature" and so on!
